researching the history of education in japan and learning that, preâMeiji Restoration, peasants/commoners formed their own schools to become educated because it was the best way of fighting tax fraud.
That is, when an official told you, a rice farmer, that you owed more taxes than you really did, it was very useful if you were good enough at math to know he was lying (and could prove it) and if you were good enough at writing to write a letter to your government defending your case.
all of which is to say it's crazy that mega-corporations are now pushing education to be "what if you paid us whatever we tell you to for the rest of your life and never do math or write anything ever again"
"it's ok to show (x) in fiction as long as the bad guy gets punished!" the bad guy doesn't have to get punished. in fact the bad guy can win altogether. the bad guy can entirely get away with it. hope this helps
and this part might make some people's head explode but: characters can be written to forgive things you personally wouldn't ever forgive. not everything is written as what you'd perceive to be the right choice. not everything is a self-insert & protagonists don't have to be relatable.
Overheard a colleague discussing using ChatGPT to manage their stock portfolio and calculate capital gains tax and it has genuinely pissed me off
I was just watching a video where someone described showing Pirates of the Caribbean to a time-traveler from 1800 and like....
Realistically, they would spend the entirety of Pirates of the Caribbean constantly outraged by historical inaccuracies. "If this is the age of piracy - in the 1720s - why is the Governor in a period-appropriate tall periwig while Elizabeth is in a gown from the 1770s and the entire navy is in uniforms from 1812??!"
It would be like somebody from 2200 AD proudly showing us a movie "set in the 20th century" that's actually about prohibition, and one character was dressed as a flapper, one was a hippie, and one was in yoga pants.

Some good news
tony's chocolonely mildly pisses me off every time i eat it. like yeah i get it ur doing a whole symbolism thing about unfairness and whatever, but its actually SO DIFFICULT to eat fucking. gerrymandered chocolate. your symbolism is ruining my chocolate experience.
who approved this.
like. ur already more expensive. i understand this. i am willing to pay more money to have slave-free delicious chocolate. why must you punish me further by making it a goddamn puzzle to break a piece off.
Tony's Chocolonely does not ensure a living wage for cocoa workers in West Africa (see 2020 report by Voice Network).
Food Empowerment Project maintains an updated list of chocolate brands they recommend based on the following standards:
transparency about the country of origin for cocoa
if sourced from Western Africa, the workers must own the companies/be in charge of the profits from their labor (this standard is because child labor and slavery have been widely documented for decades in this area)
if sourced from Brazil, the workers must own the company and/or be in charge of the profits from their labor, or the company must be going above and beyond to support the workers and their families (this standard is because "child labor and slavery only recently have been documented in cocoa in Brazil" and they are "giving Brazilian companies that are trying to address the issue by supporting the workers and their families the benefit of the doubt.")
this isn't perfect, obviously, but it is much more grounded in the rights of workers than the various certifications (e.g. Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, etc.) you'll see on product packaging
I think it should be noted that the Food Empowerment Project specifically only lists companies making "at least one vegan chocolate product" and that they only ask about the companies' vegan chocolates specifically. Their list is not an exhaustive resource for every type of chocolate.
[Source: "Understanding Our Chocolate List" from their website]
Before I found that link I was curious as to why I didn't see any Norwegian manufacturers on their list(which makes sense now, as their chocolates are almost exclusively milk chocolate) and looked up where our companies source their chocolate from and found Nidar gets theirs from the Rainforest Alliance and Freia from Cocoa Life, both of which have been under scrutiny for not preventing child labour and not paying farmers a living wage among other things. So it appears Norwegian chocolate is out of the ethical picture.
I stated this in the comments of the post already, but itâd probably be better to add it as a reblog, so itâs more visible and doesnât need to be restated by anyone else in the future.
So, Tonyâs allied with Barry Callebut to get its cocoa. Barry Callebut is one of the biggest chocolate companies in the world, and it is unethical, obviously. This led to Tonyâs revealing in February 2022 that 1701 child laborers were in their supply chain. Barry Callebut had over 21K at the time. Both of those numbers have risen, and Tonyâs has outright admitted they donât give a fuck about child labor laws when asked about it, content to let children to continue farming their cocoa instead of actually doing the activism they claim to do. (business-humanrights.org, feb 6 2022)
About a week ago, Tonyâs joined Barry, Nestle and Ferrero in pushing against the reinstatement of important EUDR deforestation legislations. Under that regulation that they pushed against, they wouldâve had to be more transparent about their supply chains for their more key ingredients - So Tonyâs is lobbying against the exact thing they claim to stand for. (confectioneryproduction.com, mar 18, 2026)
Wonât restate @closet-keysâs addition, of course. Thatâd just be redundant and maybe annoying since, yknow, itâs already been said.
If you wanna find a better chocolate brand itâs really damn easy. Thereâs lists on slavefreechocolate.org of both the ethical and unethical companies. Both lists can be found here:
Below is a list of chocolate companies that only use ethically grown cocoa. Find out how you can tell if the chocolate you are ea
And it doesnât have the vegan product restriction the other list has, which solves @aloofravenâs issue.

When I was a teenager and still on Neopets I was part of a pretty big Star Trek guild and eventually became part of its council, with the solemn duty of creating weekly polls. Well one day I created the poll "Which would win in a fight? Borg Cube or Death Star?". Naturally, since this was a Star Trek guild, the answer was overwhelmingly "Borg Cube", but someone did have the rationality to point out we were biased.
So I look up a pretty prominent Star Wars guild and message one of their council and ask them to poll the same question and get back to me in a week. They do, and naturally the fuckin geeks said "Death Star".
So then I look up a Stargate guild and messaged the lead council member, saying the same thing, and they get back to me almost immediately saying that the Death Star would immediately one-shot a Borg Cube but they would never be able to do it again to another Cube. And I took that wisdom back to my guild and we were mollified, and for one moment the Nerd World was peaceful.
Truly thrilled to finally find this post on my dash.
This is amazing. This made my day.
The upside to the adhd forgetting that you made yourself a drink thing is thinking to yourself âman I could go for a drink right nowâ and looking to your right and seeing a drink has appeared there. Thank you, past me. I lost you somewhere but you have still provided.
Turns out it was about womenâs sports all alongâif getting rid of women's sports counts, that is.
Wow whoever could've seen this coming?!? after spending years bashing trans people to "protect women's sports" they have now moved onto "actually we shouldn't even have most women's sports anyway because it's bad for their child bearing chances." and it's apparently discrimination against men's sports that we are required to offer equal sports for women. Whoever could have seen this coming?!?
Oh right everyone with a fucking brain who knew none of these fuckers ever cared about women sports and we're just using it to attack trans people!!
Don't think for a second they will stop at trangender people either. They'll go after all queer people next. Sodomy and same sex marriage were made legal nationwide by a scotus decision, and can be overturned just like the right to abortion was. We have to support each other! Not just because it's the right thing to do of course, but we're all in this together. đ

and in response to Andy Serkis' "all white shire" comment, i'm going to quote Tolkien himself:
"But I have the hatred of apartheid in my bones; and most of all I detest the segregation or separation of Language and Literature. I do not care which of them you think White."
Thatâs right racists, you canât hide behind Tolkien or being a Tolkien âpuristâ. Tolkien wonât let you.
TLDR: you canât value the potentially troublesome and/or racist beliefs of ONE dead person more than ALL your fellow human beings. If given a chance to CHOOSE to include people who have historically been pushed to the sidelines for racist reasons and upholding a racist ideal of an idyllic whites own paradise you should choose inclusion over exclusion
At this point I want to scream at people that we donât HAVE to be faithful to the horrible beliefs of our predecessors. Like even IF Serkis was right (and heâs not) WE can choose to NOT repeat the mistakes of the past.
Tolkien wasnât perfect and there is racism and bigotry in his works AND there was also a lot of anti-bigotry in his works but weâre not bound to the perspective of one man. We can choose to pick up where he left off and further correct the harmful tropes and inherent biases in his books.
No matter what Tolkien intended, Middle-Earth belongs to everyone and is home to everyone and we can choose to reflect the beauty of our diverse world by welcoming EVERYONE into our own interpretations and reimagings of Tolkienâs world.
When WE create something (even if itâs a reinterpretation or built off of someone elseâs work) WE get to choose what values we want to imbue that work with. If we truly believe in antiracism and fighting against white supremacy, racism, fascism, etc. then we must actively choose to include the voices of people who historically have been pushed out for racist reasons.
By actively choosing to hide behind this weird logic that Tolkien wanted a pure whites only Shire so we just CANT cast people of color as hobbits, you are actively choosing to uphold the white supremacist and racist thoughts that are harming the world today. Then youâre using the dead professor as your shield to retain the goodwill of people willing to give you the benefit of a doubt (or who just donât care). Itâs insidious and a great way to cover your own troublesome beliefs. Additionally it creates this mental wall where you donât have to question your own inherent biases.
Also, even IF that was truly Tolkienâs intention (which it wasnât) WHY would you want to uphold that intention of all intentions? Why wouldnât you want to dismantle that disgusting idea as soon as possible? You can love Tolkien and his world and also say you know what thatâs a fucked up idea. Letâs not do that. Or yeah no professor thatâs your bigotry/racism/biases popping up and Iâm not going to tolerate that
There is this weird tension between remaining faithful to a book/comic and acknowledging that the mere act of adapting a work requires you to take someone elseâs work and make it your own and by doing so YOU are actively choosing what to retain and what to reimagine. Your adaptation will NEVER be the book because the book is the book and your adaptation is YOUR take on the book. You, ultimately, are responsible for what is included and what isnât and what you, either subconsciously or consciously, add to the adaptation.
Finally England/Europe has always had POC!!!! So this entire conversation is bullshit. Include BIPOC in your projects people!!!
love all of this! ^
I feel like pointing out Tolkien did explicitly state that one of the three groups that originally founded the shire had brown skin, just for the people who donât know why Serkis is completely full of shit. Also, two out of three of the houses of the Edain were described as racially diverse, and the elves and dwarves skin colour was never mentioned at all.
I know this addition is sorta undermining the posts point a bit, but I figured someone reading this might want to know why people who make these claims are just being racist; people like Serkis are actively ignoring the text in order to push a white supremacist agenda. Iâm just so tired of all this âwhites only middle-earthâ nonsense.
