Your players are faced with an ancient Sumerian curse! However, since the early ancient Sumerian language was only used for recording tax debts, it turns out to actually be an ancient Sumerian bill.
and therefore they need to get hold of some ancient Sumerian coinage and bring it to the ruins of the ancient Sumerian tax office, because the Sumerians had a pleasingly direct way of preventing tax evasion, namely horrifying curses.
well I donât have any coin but I have these copper ingots, lovely copper ingots, from a very reputable merchant, never heard a word said against him, very thorough with his paperwork, anyway theyâre guaranteed pure copper and proper weight, so can I pay my tax with those?
I just want everyone to take a step back for a second and really think about how weâre using the most powerful knowledge tool in history to make jokes about a specific dude who lived almost 4000 years ago.
itâs fuckin wonderful, is what it is.
Ea-nasir has been dead for 4700 fraudy fraudy years.
I canât tell yâall as a person who studies Sumeria and knew about him before it was cool how fucking weird it is that Ea-Nasir is now a meme.
Sumeria will be glad to know that even all this time later we know that we shouldnât trust Ea-nasir because his dealings are shady and suspect

wanting to make a carlisle x reader story, dk if i completely wanna do it, or make one shots đ
So I wanted to know what kind of crystal could go in a wizard staff, right? so I googled âbig crystal,â as one does, and got an Etsy ad for This
And as you all know I Am currently taking a geology class, so I am probably more emotionally invested in minerals than usual. But that is...very obviously not a natural crystal.
So I did some looking around on Etsy.
Now, these shops all seem to advertise to the âwitchyâ/âspiritual healingâ type of person. And there are a lot of them. Crystals are a Big Thing on Etsy. And ALMOST ALL of them are obviously artificially cut into the same sort of prism with a triangular pyramid top, regardless of the actual sort of crystal it is supposed to be.
Even like, fucking, obsidian. Obsidian is volcanic glass, it doesnât form crystals at all, it is not a crystal
Iâm not throwing any shade at people who are into crystals for like witchy reasons, but it really seems like if crystals are spiritually important to you, you should know what a crystal is...right...?
So there I am. Caught in the helpless anger and distaste of looking at geologically inaccurate Etsy crystals.
And as I scroll, I start to see items in...interesting shapes:
âOh,â I think to myself. âOh no.â
But it is too late. I have heard the sirenâs song, singing to me of knowledge that will destroy me, but that I cannot help but seek.
These...elongated objects are almost always ambiguously described as âmassage wands,â âcrystal healing wands,â and other such innocuous things. The egg-shaped objects are, um, âyoni eggs.â
...Right. Okay.
Maintain the youthfulness of my sacred organ.
ITâS A SEX TOY. SAY IT. BITCH, ITâS A SEX TOY, ITâS OKAY, SERIOUSLY, THEREâS NO SHAME IN IT, SAY IT WITH PRIDE, SAY IT WITH YOUR CHEST,
OKAY.
Okay. Iâm good. Iâm fine.
Actually, you know what, never mind. There is shame in this and I want it to be never acknowledged again.
Additionally, I am not fine.
Why the fuck are there so many of theseâ
At this point I stop and start googling.
Now, Selenite is the crystalline form of gypsum. It is also known as satin spar. Selenite is brittle and breaks easily, and has a Mohs hardness scale of 2.
For those unfamiliar with the Mohs hardness scale, a mineral with a hardness of 2 is soft enough that it can be easily scratched with a fingernail. It also is dissolved by moisture.
NO. DONâT PUT THAT IN YOUR BODY???? DONâT PUT THE GYPSUM, WHICH HAS A MOHS HARDNESS SCALE OF 2, IS BRITTLE AND BREAKS EASILY, AND IS WATER SOLUBLE, INSIDE YOUR LITERAL ACTUAL VAGINA??????????
I try to reassure myself with the fact that these things are probably not actually selenite, because making a dildo out of such a soft mineral in the first place would be very difficult. Having seen fluorite before, I feel pretty certain that the fluorite yoni eggs are probably actually just glass.
I google fluorite.
Okay.
Further exploring online shows me that fluorite is soluble in various strong acids.
Some guys on a forum in 2004 have strong contradictory opinions on this.
(I google the pH of the vagina.)
I donât understand how pH works. I give up on the solubility question and google the toxicity of fluorite:
I now know at least one orifice fluorite does not go inside.
Science.
No, dear followers, my journey did not end here.
I have opened Pandoraâs box, except Pandoraâs box is filled with minerals God did not intend to be anywhere near the vagina carved into the shape of dildos. Etsy is advertising me sex toys I wish I could forget.
And vaginal steam herbs.
It seems that there is potentially a correlation between wanting to steam your vagina and wanting to put rocks in it. I know, groundbreaking discovery.
Okay, so weâre talking therapy substitute therapy substitute.
(I begin to think about how desperately we need universal health care. Maybe I just need someone, something, to blame.)
At this point, I realize that I havenât done any googling on whether dildos made of rocks are a good idea at all. So, very tentatively, as if typing it more slowly will make it any less observed by the FBI, I google whether quartz should be used...internally.
First result that pops up:
Thatâs, uh. Thatâs reassuring.
I decide Iâm incapable of unpacking this particular suitcase.
There are, of course, a small handful of articles debating the safety of rose quartz sex toys. But Iâm getting the feeling that this is not a normal question to have in the first place. I close the tab with little relief.
Etsy is still enthusiastically recommending me things that hurt me psychologically.
...pleasure chalk?
How can I describe the fear that this image struck in me, reader?
Pleasure Chalk? What could that be?
Is knowing worse, or is not knowing? I scarcely have a choice:
I check in with my emotions.
Is this relief? Am I relieved that they are eating the dirt instead of fucking it? One review complains about the taste. I donât know what they expected.
I try in vain to struggle against the tide, to return to the relatively normal side of Etsy. I begin to resent, no, hate, these deceptively aesthetically pleasing hippie shops eagerly spreading medical misinformation and things as yet unknown.
This, unlike the other âcrystalsâ I have shown, appears to show naturally grown crystals. They are, of course, quartz crystals, and $45 comes off as extremely overpriced. I have a quartz crystal I got for a dollar at an Eastern Kentucky rock festival, about the size and quality of the ones in the photo.
Quartz is the most common mineral in the Earthâs crust. But at least this is regular levels of annoying.
Then I see this:
Well, I see the photo and the price, and I think, that looks like a regular quartz crystal. Thereâs no way a regular quartz crystal is $1,347.
I read the description:
I am crying. I donât want to google any of this. I am beyond googling. I no longer desire knowledge.
THATS A QUARTZ CRYSTAL. MOTHERFUCKER THATâS QUARTZ. SIO2, MOST COMMON MINERAL IN THE EARTHâS CRUST. ITS FUCKING QUARTZ IMâ
I click on a malachite.
The malachite promises to protect me from emails. And at this, darkest hour, I want to be protected.
I have been broken. I have been lured to my demise.
Big Brother: loved.
Geology lab Iâm supposed to be doing: incomplete.
God: unmerciful.
in regards to the edible clay, iirc I think that'w actually a thing? saw a video about it at some point but it was long enough ago that I can't remember very well. something about the mineral content or something being used in some places to act as a supplement, obviously etsy is kinda sus for sourcing it but the concept i'm pretty sure is like a thing that some cultures do
It is a thing. Thereâs an article briefly summarizing the reasons people eat dirt here; I also think I remember reading, at some point, that about a quarter of adults have reported doing so at some point or other.
The basic concept makes sense, I guess. Dirt has minerals in it, and when you have a dangerous deficiency and canât get supplements in little pills, youâve gotta do something, and sometimes the âsomethingâ your body comes up with is âcrave dirt.â
The big problem with buying âedible clayâ on Etsy is that this stuff is totally unregulated. (Most âalternative medicineâ is.) At the very least, you may or may not adequately address the dangerous nutritional deficiency you could likely have by eating random clay from Etsy. In a world where we do have supplements in little pills, there is no reason to just eat clay and hope it works. Thereâs no way of verifying what mineral content the clay has.
Thereâs also the fact that you could poison yourself with contaminants, since, again, this stuff is unregulated. I googled byproducts of kaolinite mining and quickly found results suggesting that it can absorb hazardous metals during the mining process and also that kaolinite deposits in Nigeria are also rich in radioactive thorium. In general, though, mining stuff out of the ground results in a lot of hazardous waste material.
Of course, the kaolinite pictured in the screenshot may indeed not be industrially mined kaolinite and may in fact instead be dried-up clay purchased at Hobby Lobby.
My search history is really something right now.

A headcanon. Vampires have different smells, a perfect mix of different scents, but what if one of those scents is what lingered on their bodies when they died? Carlisle, burning smell. The smell of burnt smoke clung to him as he carried a torch to hunt the vampires. Esme had thought it was the smell of his candles. Esme, milk. Before she jumped off the cliff, she missed her baby too much to control her milk leaking. Edward, disinfectant. Edward had been hospitalized for some time before he died. Rosalie, alcohol. From Royce and the other rapists. Emmett, dirt. When he tried to escape from the bear, Emmett fell over. Alice, mould. She was locked in an asylum before her transformation. Her cell had no sunlight. Jasper, gunpowder. Bella, her own blood.
Dark Cullen FamilyÂ
- Carlisle learns about the taste of blood on his tongue when he bites Edward. He can taste the fever rampaging his body, turning him weak, killing him. It tastes bitter and burns on the way down but Carlisle wants more. Esme is next and her blood is sweeter, with hints of honey in it and Carlisle has to stop himself from draining her dry, from gorging himself on her sweet blood. With every new edition to him family Carlisle drinks more of their blood before he finally pulls away. He tells them that itâs necessary and they blindly trust him.Â
- Esme uses her sweetness, her beauty, her innocence, to her advantage. She persuades random human men to hand over their wallets, bats her pretty golden eyes and hands out pretty smiles to any man who looks at her. It makes her feel powerful. Some of them get handsy, try to grab at her, mistake her sweetness for weakness, and they learn that she is the opposite of weak fairly fast. The first time she breaks a mans bones, she feels a rush. Sheâs been searching for that high ever since.Â
- Edward wanders the streets of Colorado at night, stalking the streets is more truthful really. He goes after the fathers that stay too late at work, that neglect their families in their perusal of a job raise. He watches men take woman home, watches them force themselves on the poor lady. Watches her stumble home, if sheâs lucky enough to do so, and Edward hunts. He looks at his red eyes and tells himself that heâs saving humanity, one kill at a time.Â
- Jasper looks at the dead bodies surrounding him, the bodies that follow his every waking moment. The poor souls, vampire and human, that he murdered, for sport and food. He looks at the new-born vampire in front of him, and his mouth waters. His ghosts might haunt him, but heâs the one thatâs still living, that will continue to live. Jasper smiles and attacks, adding another ghost that will stay with him forever.Â
- Alice tells false truths to humans that beg for their future. She tells one of them that heâll meet the love of his life in three days, knowing he will die an awful death in four-hours. She tells the young woman that her husband does love her, heâs just busy with work while watching him fuck his young secretary. She knows itâs wrong but she canât help but feel like a God when she hands out a false future.Â
- Rosalie catches cheaters in the act, stops rapists and pedophiles and beaters before they can do more damage. She watches men stalk young woman in the streets, watches grown woman make young boys into victims. She takes her revenge on them. She rips them apart limb-by-limb and relishes in the feeling of their blood on her skin. She goes back home with the sound of their screams echoing in her ears.Â
- Emmett hoards his families secrets, keeps them close to his chest and waits for the day he can use them. He knows that Carlisle nearly killed Esme before he could change her. He knows Esme steals from men and hurts them if they seek something in return for their money. He knows why Edward refuses to look anyone in the eye and why Jasper will sometimes look off to the left of someone, like he can see something they canât. He knows why Alice has bundles of money under her floorboard and where the money comes from. He knows why Rose sneaks away in the middle of the night and comes back to him in a different outfit. Emmett knows all of his families dirty secrets and is just biding his time.Â
An idea of what the Twilight vamps can look like in the sun:Â
1. They look the way they did when they died:Â
- Carlisle has a bite mark on his wrist and his arm hangs weirdly, like his shoulder was out of itâs socket, body still hunched over in pain.Â
- Jasper has a bloody bite on the juncture between his shoulder and neck, another on the other side to match, always bleeding and always burning.Â
- Edward looks like a living corpse, hectic spots of red on his cheeks from the fever, all skin and bones, a bloody bite on his wrist, his face and body gaunt.Â
- Esmeâs stomach is slightly swollen, her neck bent at an impossible angle and her spine all twisted and broken, dried tears on her cheeks, a bloody bite on her throat.Â
- Alice is all skin and bones, hollow eyes and gaunt body, twitching periodically like she can still feel the electricity zipping through her body, a bite on her shoulder.Â
- Rosalie is all bloody and beaten up, half dead, lips swollen and bitten raw, dried blood on the insides of her thighs, a broken collarbone, broken leg, and 4 bruised ribs, she hisses out in pain every time she moves, a bite on her throat.Â
- Emmett is a bloody mess, his clothes all shredded and body twisted in pain, deep gashes across his chest and abdomen and legs, his body broken, a deep bite on his neck.Â
Hello Twilight-Fandom! So, I was thinking, Iâm going to try and write a fic, and I wanted to know: would someone be interested in some platonic!CarlislexReader I decided, Carlisle should be allowed to be the tired dad we all know he must be with these kids, so, Iâm going to write him as tired, swearing dad-of-a-chaos-family, still happily married to Esme, but still absolutely tired and fed up. The kids will be only briefly mentioned, and I havenât decided who I will include yet. Additionally, no high school for the kids, theyâll be in college. Synopsis:Â
Carlisle is happily married. He loves his wife, loves his children - at least most of the times, and during the periods where he didnât have to run away because they got bored and did some shenanigans, and since they were at college it had gotten easier but, they still tried to make him an alcoholic. He told himself, itâs a small town. The kids are away. He and Esme are going to have a normal life. A normal life in a normal town with normal people and no incidents besides the usual normal-town-stuff - a welcomed break at the moment. Nothing more unusual than the normal-town crimes, normal-town accidents and sometimes the normal-town drunks. He even would allow some normal-town murders if it meant he could have a few absolutely boring years around here. Fate didnât like that plan obviously, so it sent him his blood singer. And even worse, Y/N was absolutely fucking annoying. The Reader made him understand why so many people used alcohol to cope with stress because, honestly, Reader made his life now so much more stressful. That was the day, Esme, Edward, Rosalie and Emmett wanted to surprise him at the hospital and got greeted by âOh Esme, just, a moment. Is everything alright? I mean⌠heâs been smoking a whole pack today - I didnât even know he smokes!â from a very concerned Nurse Jenny.
An AU in which Carlisle encounters his blood singer, Y/N, a pretty pragmatic photojournalist trying to make ends meet with a too-big heart but maybe a bit too engaged in her job, and makes the mistake of befriending her.
Carlisle will be the tired dad we imagine him to be, so, itâs not going to be the innocent man we know from the movies, and I aged him up a bit, like 40is. A lot of cussing happening. Smoking. Alcohol. Maybe some drugs? Semi-legal way of earning money. Descriptions of injuries, gore, violence, accidents, morally grey sometimes I guess? More to be added. This will be a platonic friendship between Reader and Carlisle. Anyway, Iâd love to hear your thoughts on this!Â

the funniest thing in the entire pirates of the caribbean series is definitely that one scene in At Worldâs End where they have parlay but davy jones is part of it, and rather than have him stand in the shallows or something they get a big bucket of water and have in stand on it on shore
who thought of that idea? who thought âput davy jones in a bucket of waterâ and had the guts to suggest it aloud? and then who went âhey that sounds like a great idea!â
at some point someone told davy jones their idea was for him to stand in a bucket of water and he agreed to it
*stands majestically in a bucket*
ok but notice the trail of buckets behind him meaning he walked from the ocean through three other buckets of water before he got into the one hes standing in
Itâs even funnier when you consider how he must have figured all this out in the first place.
Some folks are asking âwell, if he can avoid the no-dry-land curse simply by standing in a bucket, doesnât that ruin his whole motivation?â, but heâs not on dry land here.
The parley takes place on a sandbar - which, for the unfamiliar, is a temporary âislandâ of sand deposited by breaking waves, unconnected with the shore, that spends most of its time submerged, being exposed only at low tide.
What Jones is doing here is rules-lawyering his curse. Can you imagine the trial and error he must have gone through in order to determine that this would actually work?
âOkay, do islands count as dry land? How about parts of the shore below the high tide mark? Reefs? Shoals? What if I stand in a pool of water on a shoal? Does it have to be seawater, or will any water do? Does it have to be a natural tidepool, or can it be something artificial, like a bucket?â
What I am saying is that there must have been a process.
Pretty sure that this implies that the reverse - a bucket of sand, floating on the water (big bucket with just a bit of sand), would qualify as dry land. Thatâs absurd, so Iâm pretty sure that his lawyer pulled a fast one over the curse governor.
It may be absurd, but the text of the film bears it out. Davy Jones can sense the presence of his heart while itâs at sea, but not while itâs on land (indeed, thatâs why he buried it on land in the first place: to break his connection with it) - yet placing the heart in a simple jar of dirt conceals it from Jonesâ awareness just as surely as burial on land does, even if the jar is on a boat at the time. Suitably prepared vessels filled with dirt absolutely count as dry land for the purpose of Jonesâ curse.
Then the reverse should also be true. If he buried it in a jar of water, no matter how far inland it is, he would be able to sense it. So by this logic, any container of seawater counts as not dry land, ergo, the bucket is a perfectly viable loophole.
Not necessarily. Itâs traditionally a lot easier to accidentally get whammied by a curse than it is to weasel around it - I figure thatâs why heâs using multiple layers of indirection here. Heâs forbidden to set foot on dry land, but itâs technically not dry land (itâs a sandbar, a non-permanent landform exposed only at low tide) and he technically didnât set foot on it (heâs standing in a bucket of water). Itâs entirely possible that either one of those things alone wouldnât make the grade.
okay but this all raises one further, very important question: if itâs specifically âdry landâ heâs forbidden from, what about wetlands. can Davy Jones fight you in salt marshes? can he throw down in a peat bog?Swamp Battle?
This is the quality content I come to Tumblr for.
could he step on land if his shoes are wet?
No matter how ridiculous PotC gets I will love it. Especially when it results in conversations like this
What if he crawls around on his hands and knees, with his feet raised slightly into the air? Can he walk on his hands? Can he ride around in a litter or a wheelchair?
can he be in a wheelbarrow?
What if he flies over dry land? Like in a hot air balloon, or in the claws of a giant bird?
What if heâs carried by two swallows using a strand of creeper?
European swallows or African swallows?
this whole thread reads like a conversation between these two:
In fact im not entirely sure that it wasnât their idea in the first place

Ok so this is cool but I always wondered how they knew the shadows were different at the same instant. I mean it is not like they had phones. How did they sync up that instant. I feel like that would be interesting to know but no one ever says.
^^^Does anybody know this one? How, that far apart, the time at which the shadows were observed was synced up? I am genuinely curious, not a goddamn moron asking a gotcha question. High/Low tide? (I live in the middle of the country I do not know for the precise habits of tidal activity.) The appearance of a star (or planet) in the sky? Something as utterly mundane as sunrise?
Well, first of all, it wasnât actually pillars! Eratosthenes was told about a well in Syene that, in the summer solstice every year (June 21st) would be illuminated at the bottom entirely and without any cast shadows. This indicated that the sun was directly overhead. Going off that well known curiosity and an intelligent hunch, our dude Eratosthenes waited until high noon of the summer solstice to measure the angle of a shadow cast by a stick in Alexandria. (Sidenote: Eratosthenes was a librarian of the infamous Library of Alexandria.)
His next course of action was to hire bematists, surveyors of the time whose professional specialty was to measure distance by walking with equal length steps. They measured a distance between Alexandria and Syene of about 5000 stadia. (Guess where the word stadium comes from.) Once he had that measurement, Eratosthenes did his math-y thing, and there you have it.
ANSWER EVEN COOLER THAN I HOPED!!
Eratosthenesâ work was thorough enough that by the time he finished revising his calculations, he ended up only 66 km off of the actual polar circumference of the Earth, or an error margin of 0.16%. [wiki]
