Let’s start with a simple test. Click this link here: https://whatismyipaddress.com/ It will tell your IP adres, your ISP (internet service provider), and your location. The location might not be very accurate, but then again, it’s just a simple website. Imagine what the government can do!

So basically, everyone can find out where you live. But there is more danger. Your ISP. Your ISP logs your every move online and they are required to keep it in case the government wants access to it (or if a 3rd party wants to buy your data (yikes). They have everything. What websites you visit. How long you stay on a website. What you download. Your search terms. European laws are more subtle on this but if you are from the US you are #@*#&, especially because Trump doesn’t support the open internet. It’s scary but maybe in the future you can’t get a job because the recruiter knows your searched on ‘how to deal with depression’ or anythings else that’s supposed to be private because it’s your f*cking right. Or you get a $100k fine because you pirated a movie 15 years ago. You need a VPN. You’re dumb for not using one. but what does a VPN do?

A VPN encrypts all your data so if it were be intercepted no one can ‘crack the code’ and damage your privacy. 

Usually being online goes like this (simplified): Your computer —-> ISP (—–> keeps data —–> sells it)

But with a VPN it goes like: Your computer —–> VPN (encrypts data)—–> ISP (ISP can’t see shit)

Furthermore, a VPN hides your IP address and location by giving you another IP address located in Spain for example (you can often choose from a list and change as many times as you want).  

Now that you know why you should get a VPN and what is does it is important to educate yourself because people often choose the wrong VPN. VPN providers are also businesses and have to obey the law. If you choose a VPN provider located in the US then you are throwing your money away because the laws in the US shits on your privacy. If the US gov wants the provider to give all their logs they have to obey.  The ISP  still can’t see what you are doing online and sell your data but the US gov can interfere with your VPN provider so NEVER CHOOSE A PROVIDER LOCATED IN THE US. 

I just wanted to make that very clear so my followers don’t buy false security.

There is still more danger!  Who says your VPN provider isn’t selling your data? You need to check their logging policy. Do they keep logs? If yes, what for? For how long do they keep them? Tip: Choose a provider who doesn’t keep logs

I recommend ovpn.se and trust.zone. ovpn is located in Sweden so they are part of the 14 Eyes Program and they keep minimal logs. Their business ethics, however, are alright. 

Trustzone is located in the Seychelles. No country can interfere and their privacy jurisdiction is the best you can get. The US want your data but needs to get it from Trustzone? The Seychelles will simply give them the finger and wave them goodbye. However, this makes this provider very appealing for people who torrent and criminals because they keep no logs (and that is how it shoud be) Also,  there are almost no marketing efforts so this provider is one the cheapest)

Also, often providers such as ExpressVPN are being called ‘The Best’ on websites about VPNs but know that this is just marketing which also makes those provider more expensive (and they too shit on your privacy)

“Smallpox was.”

For most of history, smallpox was (!!!) the scourge that haunted human civilisations. We have evidence of smallpox from mummies c. 1350BCE in Egypt. It’s speculated to be one of causative agents of the Plague of Athens c. 430BCE. There were outbreaks of smallpox in Angola in 1484, in South Africa in 1731 that wiped out entire clans of Khoisan people. There was at least one major smallpox epidemic almost every decade across Europe.

Smallpox was transmitted by droplet/aerosol infection; it tore through even the smallest population centres. Typical smallpox incurred a blistering fever, raised pustules, debilitating joint and back pain; if you lived — and that was a fat fucking if, as typical smallpox had a mortality rate of 30% — you’d have tell-tale pockmark scarring, and face stigma for the rest of your life. Some were left blinded.

The worst form of the disease was haemorrhagic smallpox; all the agony of typical smallpox, with the addition of skin haemorrhage and pinpoint haemorrhage in the spleen, liver, kidneys and gonads. Near-universally fatal, haemorrhagic smallpox made up 5-10% of all cases. Of this number, 72% were children.

The global smallpox vaccination campaigns of 1958 to 1977 were a monumental effort by the World Health Organization and its global associates, backed by incredibly diligent public health work and epidemiological monitoring.

Wherever there were outbreaks, there was herd immunisation. Health bodies campaigned tirelessly for the general population to be immunised. in modern trek, they always present the idea of logic vs emotion, with spock being logic and kirk being emotion, but thats not how tos has it. in tos, the logic vs emption debate is spock vs mccoy. kirk is supposed to be the mediator between the two, sometimes siding with one side over the other, sometimes finding a middle ground between the two. thats why hes the captain, hes able to see all angles and pick the best course

when you make kirk the emotional one, it completely breaks the format, because 9 time out of 10, it means kirk has to be correct. theres no more balance

When I teach rhetoric in my college essay writing/analysis course, it's always with the example of Kirk, Spock, AND McCoy. Ethos, Logos, Pathos--you need all three. Kirk isn't the counterweight to Spock; he's the fulcrum that balances Spock and McCoy.

Kirk isn't emotion. Kirk is ethos: credibility, authority. Spock and McCoy are there to stop him from damaging that credibility by falling back on an authority he doesn't actually have in the situation, to remind him of the logic or compassion that's lacking when an abuse of power would be the easy or basely satisfying thing to do.

YOUR BODY DOES THIS ON PURPOSE

Reader-insert fic (I remember calling it "you-fic" Back In The Day when it was still uncommon) is a very specific subset of (typically) 2nd person narration where the writer inherently intends the reader to insert into the narrated role.

Most 2nd person literature does not have this intention. Even interactive fiction like Choose-Your-Own-Adventures is less rigidly referring to You, The Reader than reader-insert is. CYOA narratives are generally more in line with video games or tabletop RPGs. You can just as easily engage with CYOA from a "player" perspective (the narrator is the GM, addressing the character you have taken on the role of) or a "master" perspective (you are the GM/narrator addressing the character and describing their actions).

If you see two people having a conversation and somebody uses the term "you", do you assume they're referring to you any more than you assume that somebody using the term "I" is referring to you? If you pick up a letter addressed to someone else, that talks about things "you" did with the letter-writer, do you think "Well, I didn't do any of those things!" or do you think "Wow, the person this was addressed to sure got up to some shit"? Do you assume "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is accusing you, the audience, of something?

Look at it this way:

1st Person Narration assumes the involvement of one (1) party. That is, it is a firsthand narrative of events. The firsthand narrator could be addressing an audience (which may or may not be the reader), but it can also be framed as diary/journal entries, or as bodycam footage, or as if you, the reader, are an invisible entity observing someone's perspective from inside their head. There are many ways to style a 1st person narrative, but in all of them involve describing events from the perspective of the person experiencing them.

2nd Person Narration assumes the involvement of two (2) parties: a person who experiences events firsthand and a person providing secondhand narration of those events. Since there are only two assumed parties, the narrator can only address their narration towards the person experiencing the events. Generally, the first party (narrated character) should NOT be assumed to be the reader unless the writer explicitly states otherwise, and the second party (narrator) should not be assumed to be talking to the reader.

There are also many ways to style a 2nd person narrative: it could be a character A explaining to character B events that character B experienced (maybe B has amnesia, maybe character A wants to compare B to a summer's day); the narrator could be an invisible entity observing someone's perspective from inside their head and providing running narration back to them, and YOU, the reader, are an invisible entity inside the narrator's head.

And for completeness: 3rd Person Narration assumes the involvement of three (3) parties: a person who experiences events firsthand, a person providing secondhand narration of those events, and third party to whom the secondhand narration is being told. The third party can be the reader, but doesn't have to be. The 1st party HAS to be a diegetic character in a narrative, otherwise there's no narrative. The 2nd (narrator) & 3rd (audience) parties may or may not be characters that exist within the narrative.

2nd and 3rd person narration are BOTH secondhand narratives! The only difference is if the narrator is addressing the 1st party or a 3rd party.

SO YEAH. You don't have to like 2nd person narratives. You can feel like 2nd person narratives are trying to direct you, even when they're not intended to be read that way. But maybe don't judge people for not being able to separate themselves from the character in 1st person perspective when you can't separate yourself from the character in 2nd person perspective.

We’re talking about Kirk and women, sit your ass down. I came across a post about this by @anghraine while slowly scrolling through @trekkify’s entire blog like a psycho, sorry that you got like, forty notifications at once that was me. AND I’ve come across discourse about this in the past. AND if I see one more compilation video of Kirk getting assaulted with the caption “oooh ladykilling macho man man dude guy bro dude man” I’m going to explode. 

So this is a comprehensive list of all the women (including female-presenting androids and holograms) that James Tiberius Kirk has romantic and/or sexual encounters with over Star Trek: The Original Series.

So, for the sake of coherency, I’m going to sort these into three categories.

Green - Yay!

100% consensual on both sides, no one was under any duress or coercion, 10/10, go get ‘em, partner. 

Orange - Erm

The interaction was necessary for the mission, while it was instigated and led by Kirk, he didn’t really have much of a choice in the matter. NO SHADE TO (most) THE GIRLS HERE, they did nothing wrong.

Red - Ergh

Literally counts as assault

Notes: I say "interaction" a lot, because it’s the sixties, so a lot of the time, whether or not Kirk and the girl actually had sex is left up to interpretation, this just makes things easier. 

ALSO, these categories aren’t perfect, because it’s Star Trek, there are a couple of instances that blur the line to an absurd degree (Do possessed people want tea? Please tell me someone gets that reference). I tried my best, and added notes when I thought it was necessary.

Yup! Well, she’s not a real person (the one he’s kissing), but yep, fully consensual.

My personal favourite of Kirk’s old flames. Absolutely GOATed response to having to be your ex’s opposition in court.

He had to kiss her to maintain his cover, also she thinks it’s a different him.

She was his best chance at escaping, it was a shitty situation and I love her.

Jesus, this is messy. Right so basically both her and Kirk are possessed by incorporeal beings, who are husband and wife, so like… I dunno what to do with this one, help me out.

Kelinda - “By Any Other Name”

Seduced by Kirk for tactical advantage. It’s a similar case to Sylvia from “Catspaw”, she does pose a threat to Kirk, but she does not specifically use it to seduce him. (I put Sylvia in red with orange asterisks, mainly because she is more directly threatening Kirk, but again, it’s sort of a weird grey area.)

Uhura “Plato’s Stepchildren”

Non-consensual on both sides, this should go without saying but because it’s the internet I'm just gonna say that this one being in red does NOT mean I blame Uhura, my girl, my GOAT. I heard about this being the first interracial kiss on television WAY before I watched the episode and nothing could have prepared me for this.

By this point she has him and the entire ship in her power, threatening to kill them. This one kind of hovers between red and orange because while she is directly threatening Kirk, she is not doing so with the explicit goal of seducing him, so it’s kinda vague. 

Andrea - “What are Little Girls Made Of?” ***

Ok, another tough one. Andrea is an android and the first time they kiss, she is under orders from her maker. Kirk is held captive but she is also not in control of herself either. Later, Kirk kisses her as an attempt to escape, putting her in orange. So again, it’s messy. AND I MAY BE REMEMBERING IT WRONG

Nona - "A Private Little War".

Finally an easy one, he was drugged with alien plants. This episode is strange, why is the cavewoman wearing black leather low-rise flare pants?

Dr Helen “The Dagger of the Mind”

Yikes. Ok, so despite this being very much initiated by Kirk, he is doing so under the delusions that she planted in his mind.
