I ever tell you guys about my ethically dubious radio show back in college? The Mad Dad Hour?
it was an entire radio show built around perpetuating a very simple joke, but it was uniquely powerful in its capacity to prompt the reaction I was looking for.
so my slot was at the tail end of rush hour, and i got a fair number of listeners/callers who were on the way home from the office. And like, I had a lot of callers, who almost all wanted to request songs that really didn’t fit with the aesthetic. I had pitched a power pop show when i got my slot, but the callers were not having it; they invariably wanted classic rock.
this made sense in a way. if you think about the demographics of the people who listened to the radio for music in 2010 instead of their ipods or cds or whatever, you’d expect them to skew older right? accordingly, i quickly realized that almost all of the people who called to request songs were Dads of a Certain Age. It was honestly annoying at first - I’m all for most classic rock, but that wasn’t what the show was supposed to be.
And so one day, when i was feeling particularly annoyed with requests that just didn’t fit thematically, i came up with the joke that rapidly became the only reason I kept the show going. Per station rules, I had to play a certain number of pre-recorded PSAs during my show, and before I cut to one I was supposed to read out the song titles and artists for all the music i had played before the break. So this one day when i had to inform the world before the break that the song they just heard was, per a listener’s request, Hey Jude by the Beatles, I decided to do a goof. I said:
“and finally, that last song you heard was Hey Jude, which was of course written and performed by the Rolling Stones.”
I barely had time to get the ads going before the phone started ringing. See, I had been assuming people would realize i was making an obvious joke by claiming one of the most well-known Beatles tracks was a Stones song, but i had failed to consider that my listeners were mostly 55-70 year old dads who were irritated from a long day in the office.
And when those dads heard me, a millennial woman, get the artist of an extremely well-known beatles song WRONG???!
they HAD to call in to correct my ignorance. never in a polite way either, it was condescending and annoyed or nothing. and like, they were just SO personally insulted by my inaccurate reporting that it took a massive amount of effort for me to avoid cracking up during the call. I had never understood why some people would enjoy trolling random strangers on the internet before, but in that moment, I understood the appeal entirely.
obviously i did it again right before the next commercial break, immediately after playing Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen David Bowie.
the phone immediately began to ring.
“ARE YOU AN IDIOT?” one of the callers began, “DAVID BOWIE???? THAT WAS QUEEN!”
“I thought David Bowie was the lead singer of Queen though?” I replied with as much innocent earnestness as i could conjure.
I could hear an intake of breath as the infuriated boomer on the other end of the line struggled to figure out where to even start.
And thus, the Mad Dad Hour was born.
@eduards-stuff I kept doing the same joke for an hour a week for an entire year, and the dads NEVER caught on. After episode 1 of the new format I started taking the angry dad calls on air, which added another layer of hilarity to the whole concept.
My friends on campus knew that hay I was doing and enjoyed tuning in, but only one actual listener ever figured out what I was doing, and he was literally a random 30 year old guy from the netherlands with access to an early internet connection radio service. He was possibly my only actual fan. I only know about him because he went to the effort of making a skype and paying for international service so he could call in, and while I got a few calls from him, the first remains my favorite:
me: hi there, you’ve got TST-
him: *strained, wheezing dutch laughter*
me: hey, is everything o-
him: pfffHAHAHAAH YOU MAKE THEM SO MAD. THEY THINK SO LITTLE OF YOUUUUUUUU BUT THE MEN ARE THE ONES WHO ARE FOOLISH! HA! HA! HA! YOU HAVE DUPED THEM!
me: sir i do not know you and i have never even seen you but i am in romantic love with you.
Not gonna lie this makes me a bit irritated. Here's the real version of this photo:
Instead of a cutesie reference to film censorship it was an explicit statement of defiance of Maryland's criminalization gay sex, which was not repealed until 2002. This wasn't a guy saying "Oh they can't put what I do in the movies according to a completely voluntary industry code" he was saying "The State of Maryland wants to put me in jail for being gay and having gay sex."
It wasn't a guy being cheeky about sex in an ambiguous, cute way. It was a man stating, in no uncertain terms, that a whole state of the United States considered him a criminal for being homosexual.
In terms of "they don't bother to lie badly anymore" hosting COVID denialist hearings where people swear Fauci is history's greatest monster but seem incapable of clearly articulating a single charge against him, and where people loudly insist lab leak was "confirmed" while openly presenting no evidence at all, is pretty on the nose
There's a website with "evidence" of lab leak theory, since they're simultaneously arguing that COVID was a deadly manmade bioweapon and also not a big deal. We need to punish China for creating a virus we believe didn't really exist and was a tool of social control. And the evidence is still just pointing to coincidences like a virology lab existing in the same city (a city of 13 million people with lots of things inside it). Despite this people - not even just MAGA! A weird number of other pundits have adopted it! - have decided a smoking gun was found and lab leak was confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt because, uhhhhh, some scientists thought it might be true in the early days of the pandemic. Again, they used to fabricate actual pseudoscience and now they don't even bother
(the closest they've come to articulating an actual sin committed by Fauci of late was that he got some things wrong in the early days of a unprecedented global crisis. Which is a crime I guess)
If it happened it was a Chinese plot but also if it did happen it wasn't so bad but if it happened it was a disaster overseen by Biden but if it happened Trump gave everyone checks and if it happened it

I think I already reblogged this but im gonna do it again because this is a good reminder on how toxic gatekeeping it.
I’m reblogging this for the amount of thought that was put into figuring out the necessary configuration for a mertaur wheelchair.
She also has a Minotaur tail, someone else pointed this out years ago don’t remember who
my friend who’s studying to be a nuclear scientist is facing man made horrors beyond my comprehension, and not even the normal ones you’d expect from being a nuclear scientist
Is this still the same Dilbert-themed ethics game made by Lockheed Martin that they've been playing since at least 1997?

It's got a single rating on Board Game Geek, and it's a 1/10.
This game was developed in 1997 by the Lockheed Martin Ethics Awareness Training Development Task Force in cooperation with United Featured
Now is a great moment to remind you Scott Adams went full unhinged alt right. Like all the way. Like he ate a whole lead sandwich and it went straight to his brain.

Is... is that reflector tape?
if so: GENIUS move artistically bc it probably would absolutely blind someone with LED headlights about as much as their headlights are blinding the driver, with that much of it.
Safety-wise, not really sure how bad it would be but it does concern me. Unlike LED headlights, which I already know 1000% are a safety concern based on how often i find myself driving at night and then literally can't see the fuckin road or other traffic due to someone with LED headlights.
The look of the tape changes around kill us both. So maybe the top half is reflective tape? Such that there's not much impact with headlights that only hit the bumper portion of the car?
AND that's a key part of the design, because headlights should be aimed forward and down at the road. High beams are named because they are aimed high. So, this is punishing people with their high beams on, people who have LED headlights that aren't properly focused, and people using fog lights or other unnecessarily bright lights (those mother loving Jeeps that have never been off pavement once...)
Most of the people this is going to eye-blast can fix it by changing the setting of their headlights or getting their headlights focused (I assume they can't do it themselves because if they could they would have.)
I have multiple solutions
making high beams require a constant press of a button that's not on the steering wheel instead of being a toggle and making them "time out" to automatically turn off
or have a bright ass light in the cabin that tracks your eyes that blinds you when you turn on your high beams, because if I can't fucking see then neither can you
Or mount a light bar of excessive brightness pointed backwards to reverse card the high beams, because if I can't see then neither can you
Or laser pointers with eye tracking that shine lasers in the eyes of high beam users till they turn them off or wrap around a tree, you chose to hit me with the sun so no eyeballs for you
Or deployable spike strips, because fuck you and your tires high beam scum
Certified swamp creature that grew up in an area where most roads had no street lights, woods or farms on either side, and few cars: there are very good reasons to use high beams and for it to be a toggle. Deer, cattle, and other critters what will total your car or send you to your maker express delivery. Unlit country road intersections need that wide and tall bright beam so you don't miss the turn and end up in a ditch. Signs that are reflective but don't have dedicated spot lighting have critical information you may desperately need at 4am Thanksgiving morning hunting for your great auntie's turnoff.
There is a bright neon blue light on the dash of every American passenger vehicle (I don't know if it's the same symbol in other parts of the world) telling the driver that the high beams are, in fact, on right now. Regular headlight indicator lights tend to be a color that matches the rest of the dashboard symbol that's less in your face.
We need this put on a sign next to some roads, with a reminder to turn it off:
If my 2015 Found On Road Dead shitpile has automatic headlights that turn on the regular beams when it gets dark, so people who have never left well-lit and densely populated suburban and urban environments should use that and never ever touch their highbeams. Why do you need highbeams on I-95 or on well lit suburban roads? Trick question you never do. There is no part of suburbia or the interstate where signs taller than 4' are not perfectly illuminated with their own dedicated lights.
If people can't see street signs with regular beams in time to turn, they are driving too fast or need to see an optometrist.

Machine gun Kelly wishes he was this guy
Well if it isn't the consequences of his own idiotic actions.
I'm a wealthy white man who bought a younger immigrant trophy wife. Donald Trump does that all the time, why can't I?
"They are picking up law-abiding citizens. They're destroying families, jobs," said a Texas man who regrets his vote for President Trump aft
A lifelong Republican and Texas businessman, [John] Gannon, 75, said his plans to marry 45-year-old Yasmin Suarez Reyes were derailed when she was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at Houston's international airport in late July. [...] Gannon said he and Suarez Reyes were planning to travel from Houston to Las Vegas on July 24 for a furniture industry convention. Gannon owns more than 1,000 billboards in the U.S. as well as several establishments in Mexico, including a hotel and a restaurant.
world changing post
The answer to "How did these Ancient People do this????" is basically always
1. A lot of dudes. Just a ton of fucking people from beginning to end of the process.
2. Ancient people weren't stupid, they just figured shit out the same way we do: fuck around until you find out.
3. We're gonna plan this out and it's gonna take ten fucking years, and you will cope.
4. Sticks and string are surprisingly versatile and can be used for a variety of purposes, like moving stuff and making sure things are even and go in the spot you wanted to put them in!
5. I want to make this easier and more efficient to move. If I put this on the round thing and push, it will move. If I put this in water, it will move. If I get some animals and rope and have a whole bunch of them drag it, it will move. All of these things are a better option than one guy trying to pick the whole fucking thing up.
"I'm not calling the people who believe in this conspiracy theory racist" I am. They're racist. Maybe not out of malice, but the fact that they believe in this is in itself racist. These conspiracies are always about brown people. Machu Pichu, the Pyramids, Göbekli Tepe, Easter Island, it is ALWAYS POC. It's never the Parthenon, it's never the Colliseum, despite the fact that these were built around the same time as some of the other sites these conspiracy chucklefucks like to throw around, it's never something fucking European. It's always "primitive people" with "stone tools" and "no understanding of modern engineering" so "clearly someone must have taught them this or given them the technology because CLEARLY they were just too Primitive and Savage to figure it out themselves." Fuck off with that shit.
