House of Open Wounds is a book very full of entertaining beats and dynamics that are really difficult to explain why they're so amusing without several paragraphs of context.
So to not even try; deeply charmed by the bit where a succubus is sent by the conjurer whose bound her to corrupt and ruin the faith of a priest (as a bit of petty spite over losing a fencing match to his boss/overseer in the army, mostly) only for him to somewhat awkwardly explain that he's not technically a priest and he and his god have really had a more 'it's complicated' thing going for several years now. So not actually any oaths to break, properly speaking.
To which her response is more or less 'huh, cool. Got a deck of cards or a smoke? If I phrase this right I can probably get ordered to come back and try again every night for at least a week."
I am currently watching She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and one thing I absolutely love about this show is Catra's ability to maintain constant employment. Of all the characters in this show, Catra is the MOST employed person there, and I love that about her.

character #3 was walking to the train station at the same time as protagonist (Nina, awkward and bad with strangers, anger issues though she's actually proven pretty self aware about that), nina spent a bit stumbling awkwardly through attempted conversation and quickly invented a reason to take a different route home in order to escape that. girl i feel you...
fr tho the specific line they've been walking with her anger issues has been fun, she was yelling at Cool Older Lesbian Momoka about how the music mixing app momoka put on her phone has been distracting her from studying and it's all her fault-- momoka responds "you're just lashing out at me" to which nina says, still kinda yelling, "I'M AWARE!"
if it hasn't been said enough, nina iseri is quite literally living out her y/n f/f fanfiction with her musician idol
random but here is a recipe for cold peanut noodles that you can make during hot weather because i just ate this and had a fantastic time
2tbsp of peanut butter. a splash of rice vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, maple syrup. some chili flakes, some sesame seeds. a splash of water to thin it out. now you put in your noodles (cooled!!!! boiled and rinsed so they’re cold!!) and then some chopped up cucumber or carrot or avocado or cabbage or any crunchy vegetable. i just used cucumber
you can also put in lime juice or herbs or sriracha or grated garlic/ginger or anything like that; tofu/tempe/meat for more protein etc. noodle wise this can be ramen soba udon whatever, i used soba. enjoy homies
more wha stuff I've drawn !! 💚💜

Books of 2026: THE WATER OUTLAWS by S. L. Huang.
Am I daisychaining my way through Huang's catalogue? MAYBE SO, listen I REALLY liked BURNING ROSES okay
I also preordered this, which came out in 2023, and it's been sitting on my shelf since then, unread, because of Who I Am As A Person. Oops.
It's a retelling of the 14th-ish century Chinese novel Water Margin, which is about mountain/marsh bandits and imperial corruption, except Huang's version is hella genderbent and queer (like casually queer characters, not like That's The Plot--my speed!). It's martial artsy, it's epic fantasy/magic/sorcery, it's wuxia, it's smash the patriarchy, it's so very much longer than the other books of Huang's I've read.
The pacing in the front half was slower as Huang laid a lot of character groundwork, and then the action picked up in the second half A Lot (ouch, my bedtimes). I appreciated that we followed two women on very different character arcs: Lin Chong, an expert arms instructor for the Empire, as loyal as they come, and Lu Junyi, who starts borderline-seditionist and becomes [SPOILERS REDACTED]. Very intimate perspectives for both of them, and for our beloved Lu Da and also our Big Bad Antag--good stuff all around.
I also enjoyed being able to see Huang's areas of expertise on page: the author bio says, "Huang is a Hollywood stunt performer, firearms expert, and Hugo Award winner with a math degree from MIT and credits in productions like Battlestar Galactica and Top Shot." The fight scenes were peak, the magic scenes did read like they were straight out of a movie, and the weaponry was delightful! (I just think Huang is a supremely cool person, and Huang's author bio--totally pronounless, btw, Give Us Nothing <3--gets me every time haha.)
Overall, I enjoyed this! It took me a little bit to get into, but I'm glad I stuck with it and I may or may not have binged the last 200 pages this evening. Huang does provide fairly comprehensive content warnings at the front of the book (and the bit about cannibalism was NOT fucking around, holy shit), but if none of those send you screaming toward the marsh and you vibe with feminist epic fantasy wuxia, check this out!
Pale Lights - Think of The Story
Song, Angharad and Maryam
Pale Lights book 3, chapter 61
Angharad is convinced she's the sane one...
modern AU Sylvester is unfortunately the most AI accelerationist guy of all time. he's the 1920s biopunk Sam Altman.
^ canon Sy approach to AI capabilities research. "the age of blood isn't the last one" <- actual line from his funding prospectus
tumblr has a tendency to develop what I'd call powderkeg interests, where someone who does know what something entails says they like it, and then the bullet point explanation of it picks up steam as something everyone likes despite the fact they'd be scandalised if they had a full understanding of the topic, because they just haven't thought it through to conclusion yet
cowboys and knights are the classic ones, but I submit landsknecht as another disaster waiting to happen

4. In conclusion I still think Baru 4 will get done. I have been working on it, I’ve known all along broadly what needs to happen, and I’ve done a lot of other work along the way — a novel, several games. But it has been too long since I promised to deliver this book and that’s on me. Part of it is that I now see attention from other writers and fans as something I want to avoid. Part of it is that, with a decent life and steady medication, I no longer feel the extremes of strong emotion that can push a writer to the page. (On the other hand, I no longer spend years in a depressive funk, either.) Part of it is that I’ve probably become too sophisticated and jaded about my own work, too able to see all the ways it falls short. It’s easier to charge forward with a draft when you haven’t learned to sneer at yourself. I don’t know how to fix all this but I suspect it will happen the way it always happens: at some point I will sit down and write the fucking thing, and when I get 100,000 words in, I won’t hate it so much I have to throw it out. I felt like I owed everyone some kind of explanation and update. I’m really sorry this has taken so long. I have no good excuse, because I could have finished by now if I’d just sat down and done it. I’ve just allowed myself to sink into solitary contentedness. Which is nice, but not enough for a writer on a contract. Thanks for bearing with me.
