While it is raining pitter patter mum makes one of her chaaya kada favorites, Vettu Cake. Vettu Cake is a Keralan Tea Shop favourite. Nothing but fried dough, mum's aunt would get her a few from the nearby kada in Painkulam. She would call it Thake and they would all have it with tea. Refined wheat flour, eggs, baking soda, a bit of turmeric powder, sugar cardamom & fennel powder & salt goes into the dough which is rested and then given notches in a criss cross pattern. That is how it came to be called Notch Cake or Vettu Cake. The way mom pampers you, no one else can.This sumptuous dinner is the result of her visit to the bazaar. Rice, sambar, Dal Palak, Pinju Cheema Chakka thoran, Chakka Erisseri and Rohu done two ways. The centre piece Rohu fish curry has been done is a family recipe made in Kanyakumari , it is made only with fresh water fish where the coconut is lightly roasted along with black pepper and tomato. This was served to my dad's father who fell in such love with it he decided that the bride can be no one else but my mom for his son! Another favorite is cheema chakka thoran which is tender breadfruit steamed along with coconut and erisseri which is made with jackfruit and coconut again! The fish has also been fried in my mom's typical pearl onion Masala. Meeting a friend after a decade calls for a celebration in the form of a nice meen curry. Described by Lathika George in her fantastic book Suriani Kitchen as yesterday's fish curry, this is unique because it is the only Keralan fish curry which doesn't use coconut . That is also the reason why it doesn't get spoilt easily , infact gets better with days upto a week The spices, kudampuli , ginger and coconut oil ensures that it stays perfect .Kudampuli (Garcinia Cambodia) gives the lovely tart and smoky signature flavor of this dish.
