During a guest appearance on the radio program KDDI LINKSCAPE on March 7th 2026, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu reflected on her career, creative identity, and her long-standing partnership with Yasutaka Nakata.

Kyary explained that her connection with Nakata began before her music career officially started. At the time, she was primarily known as a Harajuku fashion model and blogger, deeply involved in Tokyo’s youth culture.

Their first meeting occurred through a teen club event called “TAKENOKO!!!,” where Kyary occasionally worked as a DJ. Nakata was involved with the event as a producer. Through repeated interactions at these events and after-show gatherings, the two gradually became acquainted.

Eventually, Nakata approached her with the idea of producing music together. The offer came while Kyary was still finishing high school, and it led to her major-label debut shortly afterward. This meeting would ultimately shape the trajectory of her career.

Kyary described Nakata’s studio process as both fast and demanding.

Nakata writes the music and lyrics in advance.

Kyary is called into the studio when the song is ready.

She sometimes hears the track for the first time during the recording session.

She memorizes the lyrics quickly sometimes within minutes before recording vocals.

This rapid workflow reflects Nakata’s highly structured production style and his reputation as one of Japan’s most efficient electronic pop producers. Despite this, Kyary’s personality strongly influences the music. Nakata often builds songs around her expressions, interests, and sense of humor.

The newer tracks, including Kuru Kuru Harajuku, have a cooler tone, less overt “kawaii” styling and a slightly more grown-up atmosphere. This direction came from Nakata deciding that Kyary should explore a different side of her sound.
