EDIT: I have been updated with enough information that I am no longer comfortable letting this post continue to circulate in its current form. Here is the most up to date information. If you are looking at this, please reblog that instead. Thank you. Here is another post about not being a dick on the internet.
Your news this week in a form not written to make you feel like shit: Unfortunately the Vine reboot is AI free because it is being done to train AI. Sorry.
I don't normally vague quite this directly, especially on posts I think are liable to spread, but quite a lot of people who saw the OP I'm referring to here have thanked me for sharing the information neutrally.
I am a PTSD sufferer, and one of the symptoms of PTSD is hypervigilance. Constantly watching your back, constantly aware of any shifts in mood in a room, always paranoid, always looking for the other shoe to drop— its not a fun way to live, and it is not a sign of a healthy mind. You should NOT be constantly checking every single piece of good news you recieve, you are allowed to be happy about things you see in passing, and a lot of the time, they are good things, or maybe you can get good things out of them. Despite the probable side effects of this project it IS going to restore a massive amount of lost media to the web, so we'll get to have that, even if we're not actually going to get a platform safe from AI influence altogether.
And this could still be jumping to the worst case scenario. We haven't seen a TOS. sure, this company does AI training elsewhere, but every tech company in the world does that, so maybe this is unrelated. Do I believe that, no. But it's not stupid to hope for it. Hope is never stupid.
Also, the sources for this aren't actually that easy to find. It's like four pages deep to get from the new diVine company to the sponsor of the company to their other projects to the section of their other projects that mentions AI. It took me a bit, and I KNEW IT WAS THERE.
So, in summation: yeah, this is probably a con. It's a major bummer, because this is a difficult time to be on the internet, and we deserved a W. I think we're just gonna have to pick our favorite album and movie releases to get us through, and let go of the hopes of AI free social media for a little longer. But at least some lost media will be restored, and remember— none of you were stupid for being optimistic about this. We can have nice things. They'll just have to wait a little while.
Updates under cut
The above is edited in from a reblog because some people have told me they struggled to find it. Since this post has begun to circulate some people have also made other discoveries-- Claude AI is in the code on github, so the app itself is not AI free in its programming, also Jack Dorsey, the guy funding this, is a piece of shit. he's elon's bestie and was an OG twitter founder. I am not especially online and was unaware of Dorsey (I'm not even positive that's how his name is spelled) because I think the biggest fuck you to billionares is ignoring them, mostly, but like. He sucks.
I've also seem some people assert that there is in fact permissions given to use AI in the settings of the website-- I can't check this because I refuse to make an account on the website, but if anyone reblogs this with a screencap I will add that then. I have also seen people talking about how content moderation is NOT in place, and people who have opened the website version have encountered videos intended to trigger people into self-harm, so that doesn't sound fantastic.
In addition, some people have made the very good point that before the collapse of Vine its most popular users were trying to organize and advocate for themselves, and resurrecting their content without their permission is disrespectful. I've also seen some comments assuring that Divine is removing the content from the original users if requested, but I still think it's worth remembering that Vine's collapse was preceded by a lot of users going "hey, you're making money in advertising off our labor, and like. fuck you maybe?" we should perhaps not be getting so rose-tinted about Vine just for nostalgia.
Here is a reblog containing an explanation about short form video content being better to train AI than long form video from someone who studied this academically
Further updates: here are Divine's responses to the accusations here
This does not mesh to me with the fact that there is AI built into the coding for the app, and them selling data to other parties was less of a concern for me than them using it themselves, but for what it is worth this is a fairly firm denial, and at least a bit of distance from Dorsey, who seems to be a big proponent of AI. He seems to just be a sponsor. I would need more information about this to be comfortable using it, but this is at least a marginally more optimistic update.
Will keep updating as the post keeps circulating, blowing everyone kisses, take care of yourselves, have a good day.

An informational comic I drew last year for my Comics 2 class, reposting it to my new account (had to jump ship from the old one unfortunately) with some minor grammar changes and learned my lesson in adding watermarks! Happy early pride :)
