So @packratofdenialism gave me this idea for a fanfic where Meredith lives and she and Yondu coparent Peter. This happens in my head because Yondu got suspicious when Ego told him to pick another kid up âin about a yearâ and investigated and decided to help Meredith out as a way of dealing with the guilt he feels since heâs come to the conclusion Egoâs done something awful to the other kids heâs brought him. Hereâs a scene from before Yondu and Meredith go to the Collector for a potential fix as their last idea. Theyâre waiting in a bar for the Collector to send for them, and Meredith ends up making Yondu come clean as to what he thinks is really going on (he initially lied to get her and Peter to come with him by pretending Ego sent him).
âIf this doesnât work thoughâŚyouâll still take Peter to his father, right?â Meredith asked.
âYondu?â she asked. âYouâll promise me, wonât you? That youâll take him home?â
ââŚCanât promise you that, Meredith,â he said quietly.
âI canât,â he said stiffly. âCanât promise youâŚbecause I wonât do it.â
âWhy the hell not?â she demanded, leaping to her feet. Her world spun instantly and Yondu grabbed her before she hit the floor. âI thought you wanted to help us!â
âI am helping you!â Yondu said. âAnd I wonât be helping him if I take him there!â
âCause none of the others ever came back!â he snapped.
ââŚOthers?â she asked as Yondu slowly sat her back down on the stool. âWhat others?â
âHis other kids,â Yondu said. âIâŚI took Ego his other kids. No one ever saw them again.â
âHeâŚ.had other kidsâŚâ Meredith said. She felt very cold all of the sudden as things started make some sort of terrible sense. Why Yondu was so cagey about why âEgo sent himâ to pick her up and try to find her help. Why the Ravagers crew clearly hadnât had a clue of where to start looking for how to deal with a tumor. The oddness of the tumor being so hard to operate on even for more advanced species...
âYeah. I didnât tell you cause you wouldnât have let me help,â Yondu said. âButâŚyouâre not special, Meredith. Heâs done this before. Itâs not that he couldnât bear to watch you die. Itâs that he told me to wait until you did die to get your boy and bring him to Ego.â
Meredith took a deep breath as she tried to understand what the hell she was being told. Sheâd known something was up with Yonduâs original story for a while now, but for it to be thatâŚ
âThatâs what all the whispering was, then?â she asked. âAll those times you stopped talking when Peter or I came over?â
âSome of the crew figured you werenât really cargo. âS why I made you quartermaster. Shut up the whiners if you were puling your weight,â he said.
âAnd what happened if I was cured and demanded to go see Ego?â she asked.
ââŚHonestly I was going to let Horuz handle it. He likes being an ass so he could have broke it hard and not minded the fallout,â Yondu said. âIâll admit, was not looking forward to Peter crying. Makes a chest twist up when he starts whimpering like thatâŚâ
âYou think the tumorâs weird.â
She wasnât entirely sure why she said it, why she remembered him saying that.
Yondu nodded slowly, âYeah. Weâve been told that. Remember, you thought it was just, uh, intimate exposure toâŚâ
âNo. No you thinkâŚyou think more,â she said. âYou donât think it was an accident, do you?â
Yondu cringed a bit under her gaze. She was right. Heâd put a lot more thought into this than just a favor to a dying woman. Heâd thought of the why as more than some accident. He just hadnât said anything.
ââŚYou think he did it on purpose,â Meredith said slowly.
âI donât know what-â
âI didnât say you knew, I said itâs what you think,â Meredith corrected, cutting Yondu off. âThatâs what you think happened.â
Yondu sighed, âI know he knew about it. And I know he told me to get ready to pick Peter up when you died, which he had a pretty good timescale for, despite never seeing the boy alive meaning heâd bene gone for over six years. And I know every kid I ever brought him was never seen again and he didnât seem to give a damn about any of their other parents.â
Meredith let that digest. It made terrible sense. Ma had been right all along. Just a fling for a guy using her who left her with a kid.
Oh god what was that thing heâd planted on earth? Sheâd have to send a call home over it, tell them to getâŚoh who did you even call to deal with that shit?
âHow many did you bring him?â Meredith asked, trying to focus on the issue at hand, on verifying what Yond was saying now when heâd lied at the start. Â
ââBout a dozen,â Yondu said, staring at the bar top. âWasnât counting really; I was greedy and I admit it. They were his kids, he said pickup for pay so I picked up. Donât know if he had anyone else doing it. Probably did. If I got suspicious enough to stop others probably did too and I was just the next he asked. Guyâs been around a long time.â
âAnd you never heard from them again?â
âNot even the ones I suggested should call if they needed anything,â Yondu said. âLast oneâŚlast one I was going to turn down. She was young. Younger than Quill.â
Meredith bristled at that. âChronologically or developmentally?â
âBoth,â Yondu said. âBut the crew needed money and Ego could make gems so I caved. Not proud of it. Gave the kid a com, told her to call me if she got scared, or in a year if it went well. An anniversary call. Said Iâd give a present if she did.â
âNope. Would have been three days before he called me about you,â Yondu said. âI donât know what heâs doing to his kids, Meredith, but it ainât good. I have my way? I never take that boy of yours near Ego.â
âSo you know heâs collecting his children who are never heard from againâŚand you think he was going to kill meâŚwhy?â Meredith asked. âWhy not just have you take Peter?â
âMaybe he figured, boy has your genes, heâll make his way back to you before I get him to Ego,â Yondu said. âBut he wonât do that if youâre not there.â
âJackass,â Meredith muttered. ââŚHim, not you.â
âNah, Iâm a jackass. Took all those others to him, didnât I?â Yondu asked.
âWish you hadnât?â Meredith asked.
Yondu âmmâdâ in a manner she took to mean agreement.
âThatâs why you helped, isnât it?â she asked. âYou felt guilty.â
âSâ not really guilt in your case,â Yondu said. âDidnât have a thing to do with you or your boy.â
âBut you had âa thing to do withâ around a dozen of PeterâsâŚsiblings,â Meredith said. âWith Egoâs other children. You wanted to keep Peter safe, didnât you?â
Yondu huffed, âMaybe I just wanted to piss the jackass off by keeping Peter from him.â
âYou didnât need me alive for that,â Meredith said.
ââŚWas lousy. What he was trying to pull with you,â Yondu said. âWas crap.â
âThink he did that to any of the otherâŚparents?â Meredith asked.
âDonât know. He didnât give me timescales for them,â Yondu said. âJust said to pick up one of his kids. Just did it. Never asked. I was a fool who never asked.â
âYeah, well,â Meredith sighed. âI was a fool who fell for a spaceman. So weâre both fools.â
