no more assigning babies a legal sex at birth. i feel like this should go without saying, but no more surgeries on intersex infants. no more surgeries on intersex children. embrace intersex traits as natural. because they are.
no more gendered dress codes. no more gender markers on passports, driver's licenses, ids. i'm not talking about "adding x" or "adding a third category" i'm talking about no more categories, period. why does the government need to know what my genital situation is? why does the government feel the need to assign me a sex on the basis of genitals? why does the cop who pulled me over need to see an m, or an f, or an x?
no more "gender is a social construct, sex is the thing that's binary." sex is not binary. abolish the idea that it is. normalize conversations about intersex traits. being intersex is natural. the sex binary is a thing imposed by the state.
no more gendered sports. if you really care about equity, sort people into categories based on skill level and athleticism, not gender or sex. the concept that there are only two sexes and that one is inherently weaker than the other is pseudoscience. the male/female hunter/gatherer dichotomy is not based in fact, and is a product of modern sexist cultural biases. one gender is not inherently subservient to the other. people are not inherently different on the basis of sex or gender. it is just more complicated than that.
the concept of multiple genders and sexes beyond the man/woman male/female dichotomy has existed as long as humans have existed. the sex binary only serves to benefit the patriarchy. the gender binary only serves to benefit the patriarchy. continuing to impose it just controls (and harms) the people it forcibly categorizes.
i'm not asking for the end of gender, i'm calling for an acknowledgement of gender and sex that understands the infinite diversity of the human species. i'm suggesting an end to binary systems that only benefit the ruling class. just think about it. okay?

Microaggressions against polyamory in interpersonal interactions are important and should be discussed, but I do wish more of the conversation focused on the ways that systemic amatonormativity impact things like family units, taxes, healthcare, inheritances, housing, childcare, etc.
I'm not dating or married or related to anyone I live with, and our household of four adults can't get any kind of financial or food or housing aid because we count as three separate households despite our semi-blended finances and living together for a decade. There are laws that have been proposed (at least, I don't know if any passed) that limit housing to nuclear families.
Amatonormativity and polyphobia are not just theoretical "people are kinda mean about this sometimes" -- they are real and materially impactful systemic issues, and they affect all of us.
the book scene where dubois and shapiro tell grace they’re having sex is really interesting. it’s not just that’s he’s uncomfortable talking about sex (although he very much is) it’s that he doesn’t understand why they would have sex if one of them is guaranteed to die in space soon. they kind of included this in the movie (when he asks stratt why everybody is partying and hooking up if they’re all gonna die)
there’s another line that stood out to me in the book, where amnesiac grace initially finds his dead crewmates, and he goes “i hope they weren’t friends of mine!” which imo is a crazy thing to say upon finding two corpses
it’s not just that grace avoids forming close relationships, it’s that he avoids it (in part) in order to avoid experiencing loss. really interesting character trait especially knowing he has no immediate family (did they die? is that why he’s like this?) not even a pet (is he scared the pet will die?)
consider though: grace being so much of a coward that he can’t even bring himself to commit suicide even after realizing he was on a death mission. he even says to rocky that he has enough food to last a couple years and then he’s going to die after that! he was planning on letting himself starve rather than be an active participant in his own death
oh yeah this is absolutely true. there are several quick and efficient and pleasant ways to end your life on board that ship and grace probably would have chosen None of them and died in what is considered one of the very worst ways to go out (starvation).

People welcomed Martin and Bosco into their lives and, in doing so, quietly changed how I moved through my own feelings of grief and loss.
People treated “the boys” like old friends stopping by for a visit. Some reblogged the post for comfort, as proof that you matter even after death. Others shared it at meaningful moments in their lives. But often, people’s motivations remain a mystery to me.”
“…reading about the disappearance of cartoons and television shows from streaming services like HBO Max, removed solely for cost-cutting purposes, left me feeling unsettled (Gillette, 2025; Horowitz-Ghazi, 2023). What if Tumblr disappeared just as abruptly after yet another buyout from a disappointed investor? For posts like Martin and Bosco’s, ones tied up in complicated mixtures of grief, joy, and collective folklore, would that disappearance even matter in a few years?
I think it would. I have a degree in library and information science; I was taught the value of preserving the past, not just for myself, but for others. The post has quietly become a touchstone, not because it was designed to matter, but because the Tumblr community gave it collective relevance. Preserving social media content is a community responsibility. It matters who does the preserving, and it matters whose values shape what is remembered (Jules, 2018). I’m not interested in just archiving the post and hoarding the information on a forgotten hard drive. I want to explore the patterns of how the post lives in a way that aligns with Tumblr’s culture, a culture I’m deeply enmeshed in.”
