I love Vanity Fair. Dobbin is my favorite. Poor unappreciatiated lovelorn tall guy. đĽš
I like how Margaret Mitchell basically just lifted the whole novel and transposed it from the Napoleonic wars to the American Civil War and everyone was just like OKAY! Have a Pulitzer. đ
Yooooo I didn't know that! I am only a few chapters in but I already love the characters and the writing style. Definitely the first 19th century novel I've seen break the fourth wall.
the real âproblem with political correctnessâ is not that itâs considered offensive to use slurs, but that there are now many âprogressiveâ environments where saying the right things is more important than doing the right thing. itâs why itâs so easy for abusers to gain traction in leftist circles (they learn the right words quickly and employ them to frame their own behavior as progressive); itâs why so much potential activist energy gets poured into fighting about language; itâs why moderate liberals didnât believe fer/guson had a problem until the police emails with actual racist language were leaked. (you can do racist things, you just canât SAY racist things.) i donât have a neat conclusion here but a related point is that iâm so much happier since i started focusing on like, being a good kind caring person instead of trying to remove the word âcrazyâ from the vocabulary of everyone in my family
Just saying this is truly one of the best âdiscourseâ posts on this site likeâŚâŚthis hits the nail directly on the head re: what is going on with language right now and everyone pushing back in the notes only serves to further prove the point itâs making
I think one thing advocacy communities should be wary of is performativity. Especially since advocacy historically does attract people who are there not because they want to make a difference, but because they like the praise, validation, and moral high ground it can give them.
@argumate
you verb noun?
You verb noun? You verb noun like the comparison? Oh!! Punishment for title! Punishment for amount of time!!!!
You deconstruct meme? You deconstruct meme into its base parts? Oh!! Explanation for readers! Explanation for one thousand reblogs!!!!

I have realized today (during a particular Instagram comment exchange) that my boyfriend is the guy NiceGuysâ˘ď¸ claim to be.
He's shy. Sweet. Nerdy. Kind of socially awkward.
Some guy described the type of person "women never go for, they go for assholes instead" and I went, wait a minute. I'm dating that guy. It's going really well, actually.
He also sees women as full people, which is probably the difference :)

My medieval servant boy has gone missing. Iâll just use Google to see if I can find him.
Oh bother.
im deleting this fucking website
It took me a minute
Gotdamn I havenât seen this post in almost a decade
all these clothing stores with their 'boyfriend shirts', 'boyfriend hoodies', 'boyfriend sweatpants', 'boyfriend shorts' - every two minutes someone's poor boyfriend is being divested of his clothes for resale and left cold and naked and confused somewhere
mold pisses me off so much
oh you have to eat your produce the moment it leaves the store or the fuckin Hungering Dust will get it. and. poison your food
I ran into this post years ago and to be honest, it has completely reoriented the way I engage with food.
Like. Iâve always sorta understood that things grow moldy or stale or sour or such if left out, but I never really internalized it in a meaningful way.
But now Iâm just like.
Yeah. The hungering dust. There exists omnivorous dust in the air that will eat my food if I donât.
Those bagels have been sitting there for a week. Are we going to eat them soon or are we leaving them for the hungering dust?
Pizzaâs been sitting out on the counter for an hour. Everyoneâs enjoying the pizza, but if we donât want âeveryoneâ to include the hungering dust then we should probably put it away soon.
Thatâs just. Thatâs how food works to me now. There exists an invisible predator in the air that hungers for your yummies, and it will not hesitate to eat your food if you donât make the effort to protect and preserve it. And eat what canât be preserved before the dust can.
Life-changing.
Cemeteries are not wastes of space. Historical cemeteries ESPECIALLY are not wastes of space. The fact developers are continuously foaming at the mouth to destroy them and put a strip mall up in their place should make you even more determined to help maintain them. In urban areas, they are a haven for wildlife. They are a green space. If you are too afraid of death to utilize them for that purpose, that is on you.
Wait, developers are trying to get rid of cemeteries?? What the fuck. I'm not a religious, or even really a spiritual person, but...the level of disrespect. Really nothing is sacred under capitalism, huh.
When I am elected president I will institute a law saying that anyone with a net worth over 50 million must, at their own expense, employ a Jester. They must feed, clothe, and house the Jester according to the Jesters wishes, may not fire the Jester, and may not retaliate against the Jester, as the Jester will have Jesters Privileges.
One must spend at least three hours per day on the company of your Jester, and allow the Jester access to your quarterly reports.
The Jesters will be chosen by voluntary lottery. Jesters will be regularly interviewed to make sure they have not become Lackeys.
This law will prevent rich folk from being surrounded with vapid yes-men. A lot of problems with the world right now are happening becuse rich and powerful men donât have anybody on hand to say âThatâs the stupidest thing Iâve ever heard.â

Adult realization: you will make mistakes, you will act irrationally. You will commit some wrongs that cannot be fully righted. People will dislike you and misunderstand you for all sorts of reasons. None of these make you a bad person. All you can do is try your best to be kind and just to people, grow and learn.
in addition: Trying to avoid ever doing these things will cost you in ways you cannot comprehend until you stop and accept this.
"don't worry scientists will invent a way to solve climate change!" They already did... several times over... just the people who didnt like their solutions (cough cough oil companies) had enough cash to shut them up both legally and illegally
So my sister wants to start sewing more, because
a. Sheâs 5Ⲡ11âł and can never find pants long enough for her legs or shirts long enough for her arms.
b. She hates synthetic fibers as much as I do and itâs difficult to find natural fiber clothes that arenât made of cotton
c. Sheâs a biologist and would physically fistfight microplastics if given half a chance
So her gift from mom and dad for her birthday was a sewing machine. Not a super expensive one but a good solid serviceable one.
And recently she asked âSo where do I GET wool or linen and thread that isnât polyesterâ and mom was like âgo ask your sisterâ
And I, of course, crashed into the group text like âGET A PEN I HAVE WEBSITES FOR Uâ and honestly Iâm thrilled about this
âWhere did u get all thisâ
âBets, u know Iâm a 15th degree blackbelt of buying shit on the internetâ
âoh yeah truâ
Op can may we inquire about the website list
Linen; https://www.graylinelinen.com/
cotton and Silk thread; https://redrockthreads.com/
Linen thread and wool fabric; https://burnleyandtrowbridge.com/ (theyâve got wool stuffs and worsted wool fabric for $15 a yard! I just got three yards of navy worsted wool Iâm making a constellation winter skirt from)
More linen thread and wool; https://wmboothdraper.com/ (just ordered wool broadcloth to make a coat)
Silk fabric (THE best place to get silk lining fabrics and raw silk fabric):https://www.dharmatrading.com/
A varying assortment of wool and silk and cotton and even some leather, use coupon code spring2020 for 50% off your full order, worked yesterday when I bought some stuff there; https://metrotextilesnyc.com/
Wool. You want wool coating for under $20 a yard? Sure you do. Itâs here. Not a huge variety of colors, most are black or brown, but hey https://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/Catalog?refinementIds=4096748&Keyword=wool&pageSize=16
I donât know a lot about sewing, but I want to make or have my mom make some linen pants & shirts for when Iâm watering, because it gets to 105 here and we have mosquitos so I need to be covered. What type of linen do I buy? Also, linen pajama shorts, yes/no?
(Iâve been wearing my renfaire pants which are a linen mix, I think. But the frikking mosquitos that hide in the tomatoes get my arms)
Medium weight is what Iâd go with.
And linen pajama shorts is a HARD yes.
Renaissance Fabrics is good for all sorts of things
Mood doesnât specialize in natural fabrics but they do have basically every fabric ever made so
For wools, I cannot recommend Woolsome enough! Theyâre a bit more expensive then the above links, but they have a spectacular range of colours and weights, as well as diamond pattern and herringbone weaves. They also have a range of linens, though not as extensive.
Historical fabrics for re-enactors
Tiedtohistory.com has sheer voile linen
The Linen Lab has a variety of weaves, weights, and colors available
Period Fabric has a variety of wools, but switch to the full website if youâre on mobile
This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace
As someone with social anxiety disorder, can confirm. Take it slow if you need to, but exposure therapy is good. It helps. And life WILL be better when you can exust in public and avoid becoming socially isolated.
One of my grandfathers was a dentist. The other was a fisherman.
I had a bonus grandfather who was a trucker.
What did your grandfathers do?
Ok, an unusually high number of people in the comments have relatives that probably have a Wikipedia article with their name.
I hope you don't mind if I share this, but this is a very good point!

some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, âwhatâs the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?â and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is âunofficialâ, and we know thatâs not the right word, but itâs the only word we can come up withâŚuntil finally itâs like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is âartificialâ.
I couldn't remember the word "doorknob" ten minutes ago.
