“Madeleine Silarjuangat” This is the last large solar system I made. I created it for a custom order so I personalised it with my client who offered it to his wife for her birthday last year ♥️ This embroidery is called “Madeleine Silarjuangat”, which means “Madeleine’s world” in Inuit. My client lives in Canada, he wanted to name his embroidery after his wife, the Inuit language has a rich history of stars and legends about life above. Thank you again Kirt! I hope to have more opportunities like this to create more unique and custom orders, it is always very interesting and challenging for me to have to work directly for a client. “Madeleine Silarjuangat” Hand embroidery. Unique piece. Custom order. 32 cm diameter. DMC embroidery thread, cannetille, Swarovski crystal beads, 24kt gold-plated beads, stone beads and glass beads on linen. Wooden frame. https://www.etsy.com/fr/shop/OphelieTrichereau I take custom orders. #embroidery #broderie #planets #solarsystem #universe #scienceart #spaceart #embroiderer #theearth #thesun #sun #mars #jupiter #saturn #cosmosartwork #handembroidery #ophelietrichereau #solarsystemembroidery #sunartwork #soleilart #planetembroidery #universeartwork #astronomyart #dmcembroidery #astroembroidery #astronomylovers #spaceembroidery #cosmicart #outerspaceart #galaxyembroidery

Antique British Truncheons
These are 19th-century British police truncheons. Before modern badges or uniforms, these hand-painted sticks served as a constable's official ID. The royal symbols, like "VR" for Queen Victoria, proved the officer had the crown's authority to make an arrest.
It’s never too late to learn the right way to do things: button sewing technique via imgur → more…
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE
I feel like I just reblog this every time it is on my dash, with hope that one day I will stop being such a goof about sewing buttons.
You mean someone don’t do it like this?
Yeah I was taught to just sew them flush against the fabric. It didn’t work as well as I thought it should…
Yeah, I’m so downloading a copy of this post because buttons and I do not like each other.
I worked as a costume designer and assistant in a costume shop for 2 years and honest 2 god this will save your life.
I am a professional tailor and I approve this message.
I was taught to put a matchstick between the button and fabric as you’re sewing it then remove it and do the wrapping.
My mother is a quilter and once-upon-a-time made clothes for my sisters and I. She absolutely hates teaching, and thus gave on lesson about sewing buttons. It was not like this. Until I saw this post, I had no idea buttons are to be sewn like this.
The Sun rises over Earth in a postcard illustrated by Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, recalling the 1965 mission when he became the first human to walk in space.
Alexei Leonov was a prolific and talented artist, and drew and painted many pictures inspired by his experiences in space
This particular picture is rather special though, because he drew the first draft for it while in space using coloured pencils he took with him:

The first walk in space coincided with the first art in space. Humans literally can’t not do art
my dude Alexei made some insanely cool space art
As I pulled myself back toward the airlock, I heard Pasha talking to me: “It’s time to come back in.” I realized I had been floating free in space for over 10 minutes. In that moment my mind flickered back for a second to my childhood, to my mother opening the window at home and calling to me as I played outside with my friends, “Lyosha, it’s time to come inside now.”

Interesting - I was going to say something about how wild period fabric prints can be (in historical costuming we can get a bit focused on very specific rules for prints in ways that would rule out a huge number of real ones) but in looking at the detail shots, this seems to be fabric scales attached to a base layer, with the grain going every which way. Weird!
No it's definitely brocade, there's a pretty clear pattern repeat and no raised texture visible on the edges like there would be if it had appliqué.
I think what you're seeing as grainline is the variation in all the little floats that are blending two subtly different shades of blue together.

TWO FREE PATTERNS!
For those who don't know, I'm doing my PhD dissertation on 19th-century plus-size fashion, and as part of it I've been patterning larger antique garments.
Last year, I was able to go to Genesee Country Village & Museum in upstate NY and pattern an early 1800s corset as well as an 1830s dress. Full instructions, photo albums, & print-optimized versions up on Etsy if you need more guidance or would like to support my work, but my agreement with the museum was that I would put simple gridded patterns up for free alongside the paid versions. And those are now up!
1830s dress (L/XL) Bust: ~43” (109cm) with the center-front gap Waist: 32.5” (82.5cm)
Last year, curator Brandon Brooks at Genesee Country Village & Museum was kind enough to let me come and pattern a c. 1831 morning dress in
1810s corset (M/L) Bust: 39” (99cm) Waist: 31.5” (80cm)

Tag me if you use them, I'd love to see!
