So Hank Green got caught using AI and itâs a whole huge blow up, and I really donât have much interest in adding to the pile on.
However, I do think this case is great example of what happens when smart people decide they can use these systems âresponsibly.â
Letâs put aside the plagiarism and the energy use for a second (not that these donât matter, but theyâre not relevant to my point at the moment) and pretend these systems were made with entirely properly obtained info and ran on only solar, but otherwise were entirely the same. If youâre a person, you might think âokay, Iâm going to only use this to come up with ideas for my next paper: Iâm going to do all the research myself and the writing, Iâm just gonna brainstorm topics.â
The thing is, even if youâre trying to limit use to just âbrainstormingâ the chatbot isnât going to limit itself to just brainstorming. You might ask it âwhat should I write about involving Greek historyâ and it may suggest âthe plague of Athensâ but itâs also going to suggest some âbasic infoâ on the plague of Athens that you might end up picking up and deciding your topic is. Itâs going to provide you with âresearch.â And even if you decide to check that research yourself, thatâs still setting you down a specific path you might not have picked organically.
And speaking of double checking its âresearchâ, fact checking is a time heavy process. Not only now do you have to read the original text the bot provided, but you also have to compare it line by line with the summary the bot provided. Thatâs more time than it would have taken to just read the article by itself. And with any time heavy task, people are going to get lazy. And in original research being lazy might mean skimming a paper or an abstract, chatbots allow you to be lazy without looking at the article at all.
And soon enough, despite telling yourself you were only going to use it for brainstorming, you have offloaded topic generation, research and eventually even drafting because thatâs what these bots are intended to do. They are not meant to serve as research tools or help brainstorm or serve as a bouncing off board: they are built to encourage maximum engagement. And that means if you go at them with the best of ethical intentions, they are built to tempt you to use them as much as possible, regardless of whatever line you drew in the sand for yourself.
Anyway, my main thought here is you are not smart enough to outwit the dopamine machine. It wants your attention and nothing more. Do not assume you can resist just because you know whatâs under the hood.
Whenever you decide to use a tool, you should consider âwhat is this tool designed to doâ and for LLMâs that answer is âmaximize user engagement.â Anything else is in service to that goal.
My read of this came from Hankâs own response to the situation which you can find here. Iâve screenshotted the part in particular that drew my attention and spawned this post below:
Obvs, Hankâs situation is not the same as the scenario I laid out but I think the snippet above gets back to my main point which is these tools are built to encourage interaction and thatâs a hard thing to avoid, regardless of intentions.
Some other notes:
1. As stated, I donât bring this up to add to a pile on, just to use this as an example of something Iâve seen happen with folks trying to engage in this tech with an ethical framework. This is because-
2. Frankly, I think shame is a shit motivator. I bring all this up to try to draw attention to something I find under discussed which is what these LLMS are meant to do, and what they are advertised for which are often very separate lists. (I didnât even get into how theyâre meant to train off user data but thatâs another can of worms). If you want to discourage AI use, itâs a far better strategy to listen to why the person is engaging with AI and then address that reason.
3. I donât want to come off as someone trying to scare folks that theyâll get addicted just by touching the stuff: my point is merely that is it critical to know what something is made for before engaging with it. This actually goes for a lot of tech besides AI like Google or social media (which are also designed to 1. Capture your attention and 2. Show you advertisements). AI isnât a special kind of evil in this way, merely a continuation of a tech trend where a product is sold to a consumer with the goal of the time of the consumer becoming the source of revenue.
4. I have book recs on this topic. As you can guess, this is an academic interest of mine. But thatâs another post if folks are interested.
english major brain: words can evolve and develop as a society goes on. the way a word is used is its definition. it's pointless to hold onto the idea of right vs wrong words human brain: THAT IS NOT WHAT LARP MEANS!!!!!
Larp is the most immersive, passionate, creative, and knowledgeable nerdy community I have ever had the privilege of being a part of. How the hell did it end up being used as an insult to mean "fake fan"?! Linguistically, it doesn't even make sense either cause it's not a word; it's an acronym. Live action role player has no place being used instead of poser, phony, faker, or any of the other myriad of words we already have for this kind of situation. And the only excuse I've seen people use when this is pointed out is some bull along the lines of "it sounds funnier to say larp". Good to know you value the sound of a word over the fact you're using the most dedicated people a fanbase can have as an insult intended to mean the opposite.
EXACTLY!!!
can we please normalize saying âI love youâ to friends please??? Like no I donât love any of them romantically but I sure as hell do love all of my friends platonically and would like to share that information with them without it being weird
You gotta make it normal my dude. Change starts with you.
My friends and I say "I love you" all the time. It's not weird unless you make it weird. Tell your friends you love them it'll make their day
I need to do this more.

I don't understand why "Adrian doesn't like Grace at first" is as popular as it is on fanfics.
Imagine for a second you are Adrian surname The Eridian. Your spouse has been missing and presumed dead for around a decade, and suddenly one day an alien spaceship comes into orbit. And you cheer "Yay alien species have realized we have the same problem and have come to either give us a solution or join or efforts, too bad my mate is still gone."
Except he is not actually gone, because the eridian equivalent of a carebear decided to save them. And he doesn't want anything in return, in fact he is well aware that he might die A PAINFUL SLOW DEATH, shortly after fighting just to get the love of your life back to you. But it's ok :) because Rocky (yes he gave them a silly name) is my best friend! Oh- Are you ok-
No, Rocky is first and foremost a Grace hater (affectionate)
Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
The really unfortunate thing about mental health progress is that sometimes you realize you've made it in the form of "wow, I haven't felt this bad in a fucking while"
On the one hand it's a bit of a pick me up in a dark place to know that this will pass because it has passed before on the other hand sometimes it isn't entirely a pleasant thought to go "wow, I used to feel like this all the time. That was pretty fucking bad. It's pretty bad right now too also."
Someday your current baseline will be the sort of thing you consider A Really Bad Day. It does get better.

has anyone noticed recently that it's expensive
times like these really make you appreciate pouring river water in your socks
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as âproblematicâ in class and our professor was like, âThatâs cool, but âproblematicâ doesnât really mean anything. It means that the thing youâre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatâs not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itâs not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youâre trying to say that this is bad, but you donât want to say âbad.â Is that right?â
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the âbadâ thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, âIâm uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.â
Once we stopped calling things âproblematicâ and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, âthatâs racistâ or âthatâs misogynisticâ or âew capitalism grossâ out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, âUhhh... Iâm not sure whatâs so bad?â and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canât help but think of this professor being like, âGood starting point, now letâs get specific.â I think when we have to commit to saying âthatâs ___â it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weâre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itâs art, and it should be full of problems, because thatâs what art is.

I asked my boyfriend in Canada once, how he deals with polar bears because I was curious about what to do and he was like, just be calm, let them know youâre there, and give them space and theyâll usually just go away.Â
In Finland on the other hand.
