How did I not notice until today that if your fingers are shifted one key to the left on a QWERTY keyboard and you try to spell "for" it spells out "die"?
New definition proposal
Pain (noun): the feeling experienced when trying to use Blender 4.5 after using 2.79 for a long time
btw functionally for the US election today you are not picking your "hero" or whatever you are picking your opponent for the next four years because all presidents are bastards and they oppose the working class. you are simply selecting the one you can get the most ground on. this really helped reframe some stuff for me, hope this helps
you do not, under any circumstances, “have to hand it to jigsaw”
on the other hand,
The phrase "other hand" sounds overly optimistic here.

I love in science fiction when something’s an array. The sensor array. The navigational array. Weapons array. Goddamn, yes. Get that shit in an array.
Mildly cursed array concept: positive integer array
1964-1979 was the cultural peak of "cartoon sun with a face," unseen since the 16th-17th century atlas
Is the smiley sun another entry on the millennial kill list?
Strange new gender affirmation source: I'm now getting ads for prostate cancer meds. Like... no, that's not how this works, but at least they're trying I guess.

You know, it's fine and probably a good thing to be passionate about something, but it's not so good that people are pressured to find that one special thing, and it's seen as lesser if you just work for the money. I'm not going to lay all the blame on corporations. I am going to lay some of it. Because it is in their best interest to have employees who are really into [thing]: those employees, on average, will accept worse job conditions and lower pay than people whose number one priority is money. People in it for the money will bounce if their needs aren't being met and those needs are usually "no more than an average amount of work bullshit to deal with on a daily basis" and "competitive pay." You know, the things big corporations don't like to give you. They'd rather give you a speech about how you're Making A Difference than give you a raise.
And if you really are making a difference and that makes you happy, great. But you're also allowed to prioritize your paycheck and material needs, and anybody who tells you differently is sus.
Team is unaware their magic-user is actually just a very anxious stage-magician. They then encounter a similar villain pulling a Wizard of Oz type of set-up, the two become immediate friends, and dazzle the party with what looks like an all-time next level wizard fight.
wait. what do y'all set your home AC to? 78° F is our normal (and local officials exhort people to set it there regularly). if there are potential grid issues we raise it to 80°
In the summer our AC is set to:
<70° F
70-72° F
73-75°
76-78°
>78° F
Don't have/don't use AC
78F+ daytime, depending on what I'm doing (high 70s for exercising or spending a lot of time in the kitchen, low 80s otherwise). 76-78F when I go to bed.
I was kind of hoping TRT would fix all that, and it helped, but I'm still a cold hater and heat lover. It just made me go from extremely cold intolerant to mildly cold intolerant. 65F is uncomfortable and makes me a little grumpy now instead of actually being a hypothermia risk and making me completely miserable.
the fact that we only have “herculean task” and “sisyphean task” feels so limiting. so here’s a few more tasks for your repertoire
icarian task: when you have a task you know you’re going to fail at anyways, so why not have some fun with it before it all comes crashing down
cassandrean task: when you have to deal with people you KNOW won’t listen to you, despite having accurate information, and having to watch them fumble about when you told them the solution from the start (most often witnessed in customer service)
feel free to chime in i ran out of ideas much faster than i anticipated
Promethean task: opposite of a Cassandraean task. You have the right information, and SOMEONE has to share it. But it's all in the delivery and if you're the person to identify the problem you WILL be hated forever.
Oedipal Task: (1) Attempting to avoid an unspeakably awful outcome and in doing so creating the circumstances that will bring it about. (2) Trying to solve an problem and discovering that you are in fact the problem you are trying to solve.
Odyssean task: you’ll complete it but it’ll take 20 times longer than it should and involve multiple side quests and mini-adventures
Ah feel 'sif an Odyssian task is basically a poor sod mid ADHD
A Pandorean task - just the act of starting it unleashes all manner of disasters.
damoclean task: the thing you've been putting off long enough that it becomes a constantly hanging doom over your head
pyrrhic task: you can get it done but it's going to cost you
medean task: you can get it done and you don't care what it costs you
dionysian task: task that might not be -better- if you do it drunk, but -will- definitely be more fun
hegelochic task: it was a simple job, but your name will be recorded in the annals of history for how impressively you fucked it up
task of theseus: a project for which the parameters have changed so many times that you're not sure it IS still the same task
gordian task: ok technically there Is a Right Way to do this but it's going to be fiddly and awful and take forever and what if. what if you just said fuck it. and started slicing
If AI wasn't a resources nightmare, and if people were honest about not passing off gen-AI work as their own, then it could have a place within creative projects. Specifically at the pre-creation stage:
Generating reference images, which the artist then uses like they would any other reference image.
As an enhanced search engine for niche research topics that are hard to search for. You don't ask the AI for the research info directly. You ask it for articles, books, etc. where the info would be and then go check them out independently.
Alongside that, translating written research material that's in a language you can't read.
In principle, I wouldn't have a problem with an AI doing that sort of thing. The author/artist/etc. is doing all the same work they'd be doing pre-AI. AI is only replacing the part that they would have outsourced to Google Image Search or Pixabay anyway.
Unfortunately what we actually got is mountains of slop and people pretending that entering a prompt and maybe editing the result a teensy bit is the same as creating something.

I tried to search online for pictures of commercial windows for an art project.
I did not get the results I wanted.
Even when I specified "-microsoft" and "-computer" and "-OS" etc. it didn't work, until I specified GLASS windows, and then I started getting meaningful image search results.
I am peeved. Only a little bit, because adding "glass" was a simple enough fix. But the minus operator should have worked to clarify that I did not want search results about Microsoft Windows. It's annoying that I can tell Google very clearly what to filter out and it doesn't filter that out.
