What kind of trash is/would be in your character's car?

Your character leaves a gathering, and the people who were with them immediately start talking about something they did. What was it?

What does your character consider their greatest shortcoming, and what is actually their greatest shortcoming?

If your character was a pet, what would be the story of how their owner got them?

Your character is ordering food, and they ask for some change to be made (extra something, hold an ingredient, swap this for that, etc). What are they most likely asking for?

When your character cries, is it just for a minute or do they cry for a long time? How hard is it to pull themself out of it?

If your character is missing, how is their absence felt? Even if nobody specifically notices or cares, does their absence have any effect on things?

"Oh, I know [character]! They're so…" What?

If the story of your character's current life was given a prequel or sequel, what would they focus on?

Your character is famous. What's the big scandal or rumor that comes out about them? (Not necessarily something that actually happens in their story, but something that might come up and turn into a whole tabloid field day.)

Your character is whacking somebody. With what? Are they being playful or trying to hurt them?

What's something people always trust your character on? What's something they probably won't trust your character on?

How accurate is your character's perception of themself?

Somebody wants to get in touch with your character. What's the best way to do that? (You can answer for people who know them or people who don't, or both.)

Your character is eating a snack. Do they make it last, or do they wolf the whole thing down immediately?

What's something your character is fine with accepting help with? What's something they'll refuse to accept help with?

Your character is at a party, and things are getting dull. Do they suggest a game or a seance? Start an argument? Sneak off to make out with someone? Leave?

Think of the last song you listened to. What was your character doing the year that song came out? (If the year isn't applicable, pick another one you've heard recently.)

How much will your character put up with being treated badly? Has there been a time when somebody made them snap?

What color best represents your character as a person, and why?

You're babysitting the 5 year old version of your character. What is that experience like?

Put all your characters in alphabetical order (by first or last name, doesn't matter.) Your character is suddenly switched into the life of the character right after them. How are they doing?

Your character is wearing a graphic tee shirt. What's on it?

What's a memory your character has from school? (If they never went to school, a time they were learning something, preferably from another person.)

Does your character have a favorite home-cooked food? If so, are they the one who makes it, or does someone else make it better?

If your character was going to go somewhere just for a fun day out, where would they go?

What's something your character would love to do, but is currently unable to because of their circumstances?

Is your character more likely to buy something they don't need if it looks cute or cool? What kind of aesthetic might persuade them?

What does your character like to be surrounded by? Interpret this question however you like.

you can try as long as you like to explain something: if the other person is not curious, kind, and willing to learn, no explanation will ever work. you would know if someone was trying their absolute best to understand you, despite the immortal problem of all humans being exactly the same and also never quite alike.

there is a difference between being heard and being listened to. i am a little blind in my left eye - you can explain what i do-not-see, but i will not be able to see it. i will listen, though, and you will feel heard. my perspective maybe not be exactly what you meant, perhaps, but no poem ever really escapes unscathed from the poet. the book i write about you will never really capture every facet. communication is imperfect and fluid; that's why it is behind all forms of art.

sometimes it is not even that you said something wrong, sometimes it is that you said something at all; and they do not respect you. sometimes it is that what you said is true, and they are scared to face that truth. sometimes it makes them feel wrong (guilty, ashamed), and they cannot listen or they will have 10 thousand years suffering in the personality equivalent of forced rhubarb growth.

ah. i see you rattling your chains. yes, my love, the hard part: this means the largest part of it was them, and their choice. after all, if you had been approached by someone pleading for understanding, wouldn't you have endeavored to at least attempt some degree of civil engagement? you would have, i know you. which means they saw you like that - desperate, wild, someone they were supposed to love - and they still thought this is not enough.

you have been begging them. they have watched you beg them for understanding, and they have not moved. you did not have a communication issue. the issue was with how they treated you.

this is the manner where we will begin your torture. what is immediately and impossibly evident to you is impenetrable to them: and that lack of understanding is, in all likelihood, at least a little bit on purpose.
