Picked some magnolia petals and discovered as they started to wilt at creases they turned a beautiful warm brown color. Then got the idea to use a silverpoint stylus to scratch a magnolia drawing into the petal~ smells divine

Elwings who get a little drownâd before Ulmo goes âahh, shoot, peredhil overboard! emergency plans activate!â are v. hot but I feel like we can take it a bit further. Elwing with hands a bit too cold and newly clumsy fingers. Elwing with a whisper soft voice and sea water gurgling in her lungs. Elwing who still has feathers growing at the nape of her neck, a down that has never gone away. Itâs easier to become something else when your body doesnât fit right anymore.
We as a culture need more Nimloth-survives-the-Second-Kinslaying AUs
Variations
Nimloth lives and ends magnetically pulled into TĂşorâs polycule, because he does that to people. The histories only say that she married VoronwĂŤ, one of the few elves to remarry, and speculate that her husbandâs mortal nature made such a feat imaginable. But keen eyed historians note that she and her second husband drop out of the books at the exact same time that Idril and TĂşor make their last voyage. (Eärendil and Elwing lose all their remaining parents at the same time.)
Nimloth lives and raised her daughter to bear the Silmaril proudly. When the Sons of FĂŤanor come with their demands she cannot bear to see her home burned again. Sheâs lost two children to them. She sneaks out at night and goes to them under cover of parley and manages to kill Maedhros before being killed herself. This changes nothing about the future except making Maglor a more unhinged kidnap-guardian.
Nimloth lives and cannot bear to see her daughter killed by those who have already stolen two children and a husband away from her so she bears the Silmaril out and gives it to the Sons of FĂŤanor. Everything changes, the Valar are not petitioned, Morgoth goes unchallenged, Beleriand burns, everyone dies horribly.
Nimloth lives and fights in the Third Kinslaying to protect her young grandsons. She intends to die, instead she finds herself waking up beneath a healerâs hands when Gil-Galadâs reinforcements come. Elrond and Elros are gone and she fights every day to get them back, through diplomatic and extradiplomatic means. The FĂŤanorians refuse to send even proof of the boysâ safety, until one day when theyâre put on a boat and sent to Balar. They barely remember her but they make new memories. She dwells in NĂşmenor with Elrosâ kin for years, and after that finds a home in Mirkwood and visits Elrond often.
Nimloth lives only to die in the Third Kinslaying avenging her sons by killing 2 whole sons of FĂŤanor. If Dior can get 3 then she can have 2. Sans Maedhros and Maglor, Elrond and Elros have a less deliciously upsetting childhood with Gil-Galad and the Valar end up with two extra Silmarils on their hands after the war. Nimloth spends the next three ages getting high-fives in Mandos.
Nimloth lives and insists on taking the burden of the Silmaril off her young daughter. You donât know what those Noldor inventions could do to a growing body! They get in the habit of having Nimloth wear it on Elwingâs behalf and as a result when the Sons of FĂŤanor come, sheâs the one who takes a dive off the cliff. (She turns into seaweed instead of a bird due to the lack of Melian genes.) Elwing spends the next few years being the worst hostage imaginable and awkwardly coparenting with her captor. Meanwhile Eärendil is having a very uncomfortable road trip with his mother-in-law. When they finally reunite (itâs a close thing, Eärendil was going to choose the fate of men until Nimloth gave him a Look and Elwing stayed with the boys until they pushed her on the boat to Valinor) there are tears all around.

Semi-Slugs: these are actual gastropods that are in the process of evolving from snails into slugs, with their shells gradually reducing and receding into their bodies
Above: Fastosarion brazieri, commonly known as the chameleon semi-slug, and an unidentified species of semi-slug from the genus Sheldonia
The term "semi-slug" is used to describe an intermediate stage of evolution that occurs as snails evolve into slugs. Nearly 1,000 different species of semi-slug are currently known to exist, and these bizarre little creatures can be found on at least four continents.
Above: Fastosarion brazieri and Varadia amboliensis
Each species of semi-slug is technically still classified as a snail, but its shell is noticeably reduced, becoming smaller and more internalized as the species evolves. A semi-slug officially becomes a regular-slug once its shell is no longer visible at all.
As this article explains:
If life were simple, there would be snails and slugs. Snails carry their homes on their backs; slugs are naked and embarrassed. But life isnât simple, so of course thereâs secret option #3 â the semi-slug, a bizarre creature that sits exactly between the snail and the slug.
Above: genus Satiella and genus Euaustenia
This article describes the distinction between a snail, a slug, and a semi-slug:
In contrast to snails, which have an external shell large enough to accommodate the body, or slugs, in which the shell is completely internal or absent, semi-slugs have an external shell, but the shell is too small to accommodate the animalâs entire body.
Above: Megaustenia siamensis
The evolutionary process that causes the shell to recede is known as limacization, and it's especially common in moist, low-calcium environments where a snail's shell may be more of a burden than a benefit:
Terrestrial slugs are not a monophyletic group, but a case of convergent evolution in which the slug form evolved from different lineages of land snails that gradually lost their shell through a process called limacization. Limacization resulted in adaptive radiation in land snail lineages, as slugs became adapted to diverse moist and protected spaces, such as crevices in rocks and wood debris. The loss of the shell also allowed for more movement and less calcium dependence, making slugs more successful as pests.
Above: Gaeotis nigrolineata, also known as the Puerto Rican semi-slug, has a neon green shell that is almost completely internalized, but the shell is clearly visible through the semi-slug's translucent body
Some semi-slugs have shells that are still opaque and largely visible, with a patch of flesh covering only the outer edges of the shell, while others have shells that are more significantly reduced, transparent, and/or concealed.
Above: Ibycus rachelae, commonly known as the green-shelled semi-slug, and a species of semi-slug from the genus Durgella
This topic was mentioned in my previous post about Ibycus rachelae, but I wanted to write a more detailed post about semi-slugs, because they're just so fascinating and weird.
Above: a black-and-white semi-slug from subfamily Sheldoniinae
Above: Fastosarion brazieri again, but this one is especially spiky for some reason

average first sentence of a math wikipedia page:
A snorkle basis is a particular sort of set that has some properties and is generally "nice" (in a rigorous sense) and can do many things and is very practical.
love this post. also a big fan of some midtext sentences where this kind of thing is going on:
thoughts on Latin?
a shame it was hunted to extinction though i do wonder whta the meat tasted like
i do like maedhros being totally frighteningly changed after thangorodrim but i almost prefer him being eerily unchanged and being like. business as usual. back to work. he is immediately entering intense physical therapy to reobtain his strength and battle prowess and he is not going to acknowledge any trauma and if anyone tries to they will regret it
my erotic fanfiction is more historically accurate than yours. here it claims that shes moaning 'yes,' however classical latin didn't have a word that corresponds to Modern English 'yes,' i.e. an affirmative answer to an interrogative. You could have easily avoided this glaring implausibility by allowing her to moan plus, 'more'âas exemplified in my critically acclaimed fic with an unprecedented number of kudos (eleven). I recommend that you log out of AO3 and return only after acquiring satisfactory knowledge of the subject matter.

I am constantly thinking about a review of Harrow the Ninth where the reviewer disliked a lot about the book but specifically complained how it wasnât sci-fi-y enough for something set 10,000 years in the future. He complained it was unrealistic they were eating ginger biscuits and smoking cigarettes and Iâm like ⌠THATâS INTENTIONAL! ITâS THEMATICALLY SIGNIFICANT!! TAMSYN MUIR IS MAKING A POINT ABOUT HOW CLINGING TO A GLORIFIED PAST WILL DESTROY YOU!!
John Gaius tells us (well, Harrow) in Nona the Ninth that he always hated change, but even in Harrow the Ninth itâs clearâhe and his lyctors are stagnating and have been for millennia. Theyâre constantly talking about how great things used to be (sexy parties, Cassiopeiaâs cooking, etc.). They have no hope for the future. John has a spaceship full of bodies in cryosleepâliterally frozen in time and undying but also unable to grow or live. He is the Emperor Undying.
The theme becomes more explicit in Nona the Ninth: we see John (and arguably BOE) stuck on this 10,000-year-old grudge and unable to move past it. He thought he could keep Alecto in stasis in a tomb what, forever? He makes Gideon into a non-living preserved version of herself.
Meanwhile the characters who are living and growing are changing, even when itâs sometimes awful, because itâs how they keep doing what needs to be done. Palamedes and Camilla say before they become Paul that it wasnât inevitable, but it is the best thing they can do now: they will make this imperfect irreversible change because thatâs how they keep living and protecting the people they love. On the trip to the Ninth, Nona considers it might be better to just die, instead of continue this uncertain journey forward, but ultimately accepts irrevocable, painful change because NOODLE. And because âYou canât take loved awayâ: change doesnât destroy the past or invalidate the good that existed there. Living requires change, but change doesnât require forgetting.
Anyway, thank you to that reviewer who was so annoyed by the ginger biscuits in Harrow the Ninth that he illuminated a major theme in the series for me.
When Elladan and Elrohir are born, seabirds flock to Imladris, leaving colorful crystals and pearls outside the nursery. Gil-estel shines brighter than ever before and stays fixed in the sky above the hidden valley until dawn.
Celebrian hangs her law-mother's gifts over the twins' crib and Elrond takes them outside, wrapped cozily in the softest Numenorean wool, to look at his father's star.
