something really compelling about jaadugar is that our main characters have both been sold away from their first homes and then stolen away from their second homes. and they are fighting for their second homes, not their first.
that's the problem. they know they could learn to love the mongols/become mongolian because it's happened before.
they have to work hard to keep their second lives in their hearts or else they'll adapt without even realizing. and there's this tension that they both leave unaddressed (as far as i've seen) where like....is the love for your first home still there? did you adapt so well that you were truly happy in your second home, or did you still miss it?
few updates you guys need to know about what's happening as an aftermath of 20th july & still the continued protest-
⢠they've started detaining students liberally. if you're going to the protest or coming from it they're very likely to detain you (the police has spread it check points all across central delhi). you'll be denied entry by auto or even walk, they'll either try to scare you away or detain you. if you're coming from other state especially by railway you'll be asked what are you here for & be asked to prove it.
⢠the government has blocked 17 metro stations surrounding jantar mantar. for some reason they're also covering up janpath & other nearby metro stations. all entrances to jantar mantar have been closed off & a complete internet shutdown near jantar mantar.
⢠they are denying lawyers contact with their clients. they've also been denied entry in police station to speak to their clients, that inspector has apologized qa of now & an internal investigation for his behaviour is said to have started.
⢠they're also making sure that the protesters have no access to food, water or electricity. last night electricity supply to janpath was cut off ++ the police are now stopping delivery men at check points & seizing food ordered by supporters from all across the country (don't worry they have enough food).
⢠cafes & shops in connaught place have been given a legal notice to shut down by 6 (since many of them were providing free water & washroom services to protesters). even nearby hotels have denied room booking to doctors.
⢠many creators have been offered money to speak against the protest & start a hate campaign.
⢠we are under complete state surveillance. the police is using meta ai glasses to record the protesters, and is later running a facial recognition check on them.
anyways if you're still planning to go this weekend because no more office & let's be honest none of us will stop showing our support no matter how much they try to scare us, here are few things you should remember.
Higgledy-piggledy, many a year ago, I and a maiden named Annabel Lee
lived in an amorous interconnectedness down in a kingdom that sat by the sea.
I was a child and she was a child, but summing our love yielded more than its parts --
therefore the seraphim jealously coveted my and my Annabel's childish hearts.
This was the reason a wind from the overcast chilled her and killed her and bore her away,
carried by countrymen highborn and beautiful, into a sepulchre down by the waves.
Not so contentedly, not half as happily, up in their Heaven the angels conferred,
sent us a tempest to chill her by nighttime -- yes, that was the argument, all men averred.
Under the ocean, the antidiluvian demons, and angels in Heaven above,
never can sever my soul from the soul of my younger, more foolish, more beautiful love:
Higgledy piggledy, moonbeams and starlight, her eyes find me dreaming, my Annabel Lee,
there in her sepulchre all of a night-tide, I lie with my bride in her tomb by the sea.
But, I AM fascinated by water treatment systems and I WOULD have appreciated the information ā¹ļø

hearing anything about the nolan odyssey is so funny. it's like "they cut the extremely important and infamous nobody scene" "the cyclops is a giant puppet that they put in an actual historical cave + gave circe animatronics for her pig transformation instead of cgi" "they dumped plastic skeletons in an environmentally protected location they were not supposed to be in" "they recreated ancient greek instruments in order to have an accurate score" "all of odysseus's agency is basically gone" "anne hathaway actually learned how to weave ancient looms" "the women in this movie are treated like shit" "they actually buried actors alive to get those underworld shots" "did you see what the fuck zendaya was fucking wearing holy shit you can't DO THAT, MA'AM" "what do you mean there was a legitimate epic the musical reference" "NOT A SINGLE FUCKING GREEK WAS CAST IN THIS MOVIE"
like did nolan have two guys standing at his side at all times whispering ideas in his ear and one told the truth and the other told lies and they didnt tell him which was which until they wrapped production cause
mutuals can always dm me but be warned i talk like your coworker who is trying too hard to get to know you and my response times are akin to the response times you might get if we were communicating by letter
I've another tolkien academic article to recommend, though this one is far more easily accessible than 'Wretched of Middle-earth' thankfully, though is also amusingly written by some 'Millers'
"Tolkien and Rape; Sexual Terror, Sexual Violence, and the Womanās Body in Middle-earth" by T. S. Miller and Elizabeth Miller contains #1 an excellent examination of Shelob's often remarked upon 'monstrously-feminine sexuality' #2 a robust (if still too nervous for my liking) critique of Tolkien's treatment of rape in all his body of work, and #3 a whole new anecdote about Tolkien's medievalist scholarship that I had never heard about. This anecdote is also, crucially, so fucking embarassing for him like it has to be read to be believed.
The paper is (I think?) pretty approachable apart from the quotes that are in middle english. And somehow a bit funny too! Which I understand is strange to say about an article discussing rape but look;
In what follows, we will insist on paying close attention to what Tolkien and his writings say and show about women as embodied beings who desire and who age, even when these women take the shape of outsized arachnids.
Lerp Psyllids: these insects feed on plant sap and then use the excess sugar to build protective structures around themselves
Above: three different species of lerp psyllid
These tiny, aphid-like creatures are commonly known as lerp psyllids or jumping plant lice. Their nymphs have specialized mouthparts that can extract the sap from certain plants, and the sugar is then excreted as a liquid that quickly crystalizes when it hits the air, allowing the nymphs to build intricate structures known as lerps.
Above: psyllid nymphs hiding beneath their lerps, likely Creiis corniculatus and Creiis costatus
As this article explains:
Lerps are basically pure starch with some proteins and fats. They are created by psyllids, which are tiny, sap-sucking insects. When psyllid nymphs imbibe tree sap, their gut absorbs the amino acids and nutrients, but they quickly excrete the water as honeydew and the sugar as lerps.
Above: the lerps of two different psyllids from genus Cardiaspina
Each species produces its own distinctive type of lerp. Some of these structures resemble clamshells, while others have a fuzzy, glassy, or basket-like appearance; most lerps measure roughly 1-5mm in diameter, but some have a wavy or tube-like shape that can extend to a length of more than 10mm.
Above: a pair of exposed psyllid nymphs
These structures provide the nymphs with some measure of protection from parasites, predators, and dehydration, but they can also attract some unwanted attention:
Unfortunately for psyllids, their homes taste sweet (containing more starch than cane sugar) and are a prized food of birds, mammals and opportunistic humans. The level of sweetness fluctuates depending on the season, the weather, and the species of psyllid.
Above: animals feeding on some sweet, delicious lerps
The nymphs themselves are tiny, and their bodies often have a flat, oblong shape that allows them to slide beneath their lerps more effectively. They spend all five stages of nymphal development tucked beneath their lerps; if the structure is damaged, removed, or destroyed, the nymph immediately begins to construct a new one.
Above: genus Hyalinaspis and genus Cardiaspina
When they finally reach maturity, the psyllids shed their exuviae (molted exoskeletons) and emerge from their lerps as fully-developed adults. The adult psyllids are winged insects that look like miniature cicadas, with their bodies typically measuring less than 5mm long (that's about 1/5th of an inch).
Most lerp-forming psyllids are native to Australia, but they also occur as an invasive species in many other parts of the world.
Above: nymphs of genus Glycaspis and Cardiaspina
Lerps have traditionally been incorporated into the beliefs and practices of Aboriginal cultures in Australia, which is home to more than 300 different species of lerp-producing psyllid:
Lerps feature in Aboriginal calendars, ceremonies, mythology, and cosmology, all of which have embedded biocultural knowledge about the time and place for optimal collection. These insects are central to Indigenous cultures, yet Western science knows surprisingly little about their taxonomy, biology, and ecology.
Above: an unidentified lerp psyllid
The term "lerp" actually comes from the indigenous word lerep, which means "sweet" in the Wemba-Wemba language of southeastern Australia.
Above: Eucalyptolyma maideni, also known as a spotted gum lerp psyllid, hiding beneath its fern-like lerp

One of the best letters Iāve ever seen just popped up on my Facebook memories. Still makes me laugh.
As today is the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, itās a great time to revisit Dinah from Devonās memory of this historic event. And yes, still makes me laugh.
Today is the 54th anniversary of the moon landing, but Dinahās diary entry is still absolutely magnificent.
57th anniversary of the moon landing and the best diary entry in the history of diary entries. Sit down Samuel Pepys, itās over. UGH.
moon's haunted
Iām still chugging along on my timeline rewrite, and was just idly thinking that it takes Costis and Kamet sooo much longer to walk between cities than it does people on the peninsulaāitās pretty consistent that a healthy person could walk the entire distance between the Attolian and Sounisian capitals in about two weeks on footāand then I remembered this two maps and the different levels of intentional distortion between them.
Peak worldbuilding.
