"AI industry panics over data center politics" has been the theme of several articles lately, and the part that gets me is how none of them saw this coming. You do these hush hush deals with politicians in exchange for enormous tax breaks and giveaways, people living nearby don't even realize a football stadium sized center is going up until construction starts, and your argument is you need to guzzle up land and electricity and water and be loud and bright as fuck in rural areas people moved to for dark skies and quiet, for...what? Grok to be able to generate more child sexual abuse material??? We're not even getting, like, fuel out of this??? And you're surprised people are fucking upset about it? And the best you can come up with is "if we don't China might do it first"???

It does seem to me that using AI to "create" "art" only makes sense if you see art as a thing to passively consume and not a conversation between the artist and the audience. Like, art is interesting because a person created it and had something to express and then you get to interpret that expression and think about how they chose to express it. Even if it were good, which it isn't, what is the fucking point of doing that with machine generated slop.
