Someone made the suggestion for LGBTQA+ Christians to have their own flag. I loved that idea, so I started putting together my own designs.
I knew immediately I wanted black in there, as well as a color for hope and a color for faith.
The first design is a simple three shade design. The first is yellow, to represent hope. Hope is essential, it keeps us going and encourages us to endure to the end as we pray for acceptance, acknowledgment, love. Yellow often means happiness and it’s a rather positive color to highlight the best parts of being Christian and being queer.
The next stripe is blue. I chose it specifically to represent faith. Faith is the keystone of being a Christian, and being LGBTQA+ and Christian means we need to have faith in spades. Faith and hope go hand and hand as we press forward, looking ahead for a better future. Blue also represents courage, compassion, peace and heaven.
I wanted a black stripe to memorialize those that have come before us. Those who were persecuted for sexuality, gender, gender presentation or religion. Those who were pushed out of their congregations, who were hurt. Those who were killed, who had to hide. We honor them with this stripe.
As you can see, I played around with a few different designs and included one with a white triangle on the left side, and one with a white laurel. I wanted to include white in the design in some way. White is often associated with purity, innocence. These are things we are told we can never be because of who we are and how we were born and I want to claim those traits. White also holds great meaning in Christianity, when you’ve repented and become clean, when you’ve turned to Christ.
The laurel is rather self-indulgent, since it’d be hard to reproduce, but I loved the way it came out. Laurels represent peace, protection and victory in the secular world, and in Christianity represents the resurrection. They hold great meaning and honor those who carry that symbol, so again I wanted to claim those meanings for our community.
I hope this is meaningful to you, and inspires other designs!
