i have to say, i'm starting to understand now why the tolkien estate was more okay with the rings of power than with the peter jackson movies. it's not because the show is better than the original jackson trilogy (it's not) but i think it's because the show seems more interested in the deeper lore than the jackson movies ever were.
the original lotr film trilogy provides you with just enough background info that a viewer who isn't familiar with the books can follow what's going on and get the ~vibes~ but it doesn't really provide many openings for exploring further. like i don't think the concept of the "valar" or anything about the greater cosmology of middle earth is ever really mentioned in the films at all except in background blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments whereas in trop, they namedrop different valar at least once an episode.
tbh i think a lot of that has to do with timeframes and what it's possible to depict in a tv series vs a film trilogy but it is kind of interesting to consider (especially since i think the main objection the tolkien estate expressed towards the jackson movies was a feeling that they were just like hollywood action movies which tbf they kind of were but were also some of the most elevated examples of that particular genre ever made.)
