the idea that every summer will be as hot if not hotter than this for the rest of my life is unbearable i need to (remembers suicide jokes are bad for my mental health) murder an oil executive
http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2017/05/what_state_prisoners_get_to_wo.html
OMG
Things that I knew about: that the mass incarceration of people in the USA , particularly black men, has direct ties to/is an extension of slavery. Things I did not know: this specific shit about Louisiana HOLY FUCK this is evil.
OH MY GOSH????
When activist Sam Sinyangwe was awaiting a meeting with the governor’s office at the Louisiana state capitol building in Baton Rouge, he not
The 13th Amendment provides a loophole that allows for the legality of unpaid prison labor, which is sometimes called "modern-day slavery."
Grew up next to Angola. It’s much worse than you think
I wonder how many people are imprisoned for weed
I’m from Mississippi and it’s like this in my home town. Enslaved prisoners clean roadways, pick cotton, everything they’ve done since before slavery was supposedly ended. What they teach in schools is nothing but propaganda.
Blue states aren’t blameless either.
This is officially public data now, so I can share the most fucked up thing I’ve seen in a year of government bureaucracy.
A lot of the folks fighting wildfires in California are convicts. It’s perfectly legal to coerce or force convicts to work in this state, so this backbreaking, dangerous, health-destroying work is… not being freely chosen.
(Here’s the failed constitutional amendment from 2024 which would have prohibited forced labor. https://ballotpedia.org/California_Proposition_6,_Remove_Involuntary_Servitude_as_Punishment_for_Crime_Amendment_(2024) )
Last year, the legislature passed a bill which will increase these convicts’ pay - while actively fighting fires - from $1.00/hour to $7.25/hour.
This is such a crying, unexpected emergency that the Department of Corrections had to go to the legislature, hat in hand, to ask for money. Not to pay the wages - to pay for IT infrastructure, because no convict worker has ever made enough money for the IRS to bother taxing them.
No convict has ever made enough for the IRS to bother with. That agency famous for letting things slide. Obviously.
(Here’s the link to the PDF. It’s a PDF, fair warning. https://bcp.dof.ca.gov/2627/FY2627_ORG5225_BCP9101.pdf )
All our firefighters are underpaid and underprotected. But people are being forced into work that will give them cancer and destroy their lungs, for less than half of minimum wage - and less than half of minimum wage is such a drastic improvement that it’s breaking the bureaucracy.
That’s a special level of fucked up.
I would like to add that the incarcerated firefighters, once released, cannot get jobs as firefighters because of their record.
The state can force you to risk your life fighting wildfires. But once you’re released you’re not qualified to choose to be a firefighter. because now you have a record.
i hate how they market alexa as a ‘member of the family’ like that’s SO fucking blatantly insidious and terrifying also if i wanted an untrustworthy/cold/emotionless machine in my life i’d just talk to my fuckin father
“Guys stop bullying my wiretap”
#did we all collectively forget why Big Brother was called that
also at the end when they ask you "any questions?" and you can't think of anything: ask about parking. even if you don't have a car.
I have an interview today in a couple hours, how did the algorithm know I needed this
Btw when they ask if you have questions some actual good options are stuff like “what’s a typical day like in this role” or “is this job open because someone is leaving or is this a new position”
Another good question I stole from a reddit post that has really impressed all interviewers (two job offers!) is: "let's say you hire me and in a year you're thinking you made a really great choice. What will I have done to make you think that?"
It gets them talking about what they're looking for in the role, thinking about how you could fit it, and lets you end the interview getting to reiterate how good you would be for the role and how enthusiastic you are for it.
If you get the 'tell me about yourself' I've actually had at least one interview where they want to know about you as a person.
It might be worth asking them "Do you mean professionally, to get an idea of my work, or personally to see how I'll fit into the workplace culture?"
During job interviews I am often asked for the challenges I faced and methodologies I implemented in past jobs and academics. When the interview has ended and it’s time for me to ask questions, I always ask the same two:
1. “About the challenge I faced / methodology that I implemented, may I know if there’s anything you would have done differently?”
Reason: The purpose of this is to show that you like to learning from others and are open to feedback. Everyone likes a chance to yap, and interviewers are no different. You might even learn something new and interesting from them.
2. “How did I do during this interview? Do you have any feedback for me?”
Reason: Once again, this shows that you fit the typical stereotype of a go-getter who’s always seeking to improve. I’m not actually like this, but a white lie or two never hurts your chances.
Note: Your mileage may vary. All the best of luck with your job search!!
Funniest thing I have seen in 2020
Ok but legit the funniest part of this is that the cat just knows what he’s about to do before his tongue is even out. He’s done this more than once. A lot more.

What to do if you find a baby bunny.
Patreon | Mailing list
If you have baby bunnies in your yard where you let your dogs loose, you can put a laundry basket over the nest while your dogs are outside! Mama normally feeds her kids at dawn and dusk, so you won't be preventing her from accessing her babies. Don't move a nest!! mama is stupid!
i think the luckiest moment of my life - at least, the luckiest moment i'm aware of & can remember - was when i poured HOURS of wrist-grinding labor into nålbinding baby socks with no pattern & vague measurements pirated off a machine-made baby sock, and they turned out weirdly long and skinny. and then the baby was born with such weirdly long and skinny feet that the only socks that fit him were the ones i made. what a very specific little lottery to win.
Biggest fuck-up ever is that people have to pay to become doctors
Like unironically we should be subsidising at least 50% of their educations. What do you mean we have a shortage of doctors we should have surplus. What do you mean they’re being overworked they should be treated like royalty, they can fix human bodies
I don’t care if some of them are only doing it for the money. I don’t care if all of them are only doing it for the money. Intentions don’t matter to the stitches in my nana’s leg or the ten billion other lifesaving treatments we all get at a detriment to their finances and mental wellbeing. Entire cities are kept alive by just a couple thousand of them what are we DOINGGGGG
