For one, she's not really "chosen" she was created for this role. "Designed" for this role if Doug is to be believed. And she's not really the only "one". There are others like her. Others created like her. Born as a teenager whose sole purpose is to fight monsters, in part in service of protecting someone else with a particular destiny.

Relatedly, Kim and Doug's relationship is really funny because Doug is theoretically has the chosen one mentor role. He's the chooser. The one in charge of guiding her towards her purpose. But instead of chosen one mentoring her about her destiny, he mentors her about being a normal person. Not to the same extent as Romy and Bobby, but the ability to choose her own future is something Doug wants for her.

It's not like he found a lone chosen one and decided she deserved better than a destiny others forced upon her. He made her to do chosen one stuff. He just... also is inclined to treat her like a person.

Which has the side effect where, as a result of treating her as a normal teenager, she starts acting like a normal teenager. Including sulking about her origin and getting frustrated with him when he's being a bad parent.

Which wouldn't even be an issue if he had just treated her as a weapon in the first place. But unfortunately being just a bit too humane turned his relationship with Kim from Warrior and his Blade, to Father and Daughter.

And being a parent means he can actually mess up with her in ways that he couldn't if she wasn't a person. That he actually has to make decisions with her best interest in mind. Which does not necessarily align with what she was created for.

Doug rushed into doing his job and fighting against evil and oops, he wasn't a terrible person and now he's a dad. And he is not good at it.

My original intention was to create a horror series for kids inspired by the movies I watched as a kid: “Ghostbusters,” “Gremlins,” and, of course, “The Goonies.” That’s where most of my inspiration came from.
