the idea that a sex scene in fiction is fundamentally useless/simply for audience titillation UNLESS they’re fucking infodumping exposition while they bone or something is so funny and myopic to me. like, you really genuinely believe for real that there is NOTHING to be gained about your understanding of a story or characters simply from how they approach and engage in sex? really for real?
i'm not convinced that art only has something to offer us when we personally want to participate in the activities being depicted
Reblogging for the last comment.
I too, believe that art has things to offer us even if we don't want to recreate the activities depicted - i.e. War movies, sports stories. My fave genre is mystery and I've never committed a crime in my life.
As an ace person, I admit to leafing through sex scenes occasionally, but I will always acknowledge the power of a well-written / well-portrayed sex scene to explore the connection of the characters and the development of their relationship. Not to mention revealing parts of the character's worldview that won't be mentioned any other way.
