Thereās a certain subset of the fandom who really donāt like when you use the A word (abuse) to discuss Anne Riceās characters.
But they are abusive. Abuse is pretty much an entry level requirement for the gothic genre. Itās all about exploring taboo subjects but not necessarily imposing judgement on them and thatās precisely what she did. It doesnāt mean sheās a bad person. It doesnāt mean youāre a bad person if you like her characters. I actually wish passive exploration of abuse was more common than it is because it is fascinating.
In Anneās work, there is constant abuse, and that is what it is. That is the word weāve coined for dynamics like the ones she writes about. She just writes about them as if she were a passive observer, which is where half the appeal of the books comes from imo. Itās far more interesting to read about how characters respond to toxic dynamics rather than for author to hold your hand and tell you theyāre bad. Labelling it abuse isnāt passing judgment on the books or the characters. Itās just a clearer word for whatās going on.
We know Armand is being abused by Marius because his emotional outbursts (amongst other examples) are the most obvious kinds youād witness in a real child being abused as he was.
We know Gabrielle is abusing Lestat (neglect is abuse) because Lestat desperately fawns over her whenever sheās around to try and prevent her from leaving again. We also know because Anne had a real issue with how neglectful Gabi was and said so directly.
The characters give real life responses that abused people exhibit and the story only benefits from this. Anneās vampires are so heightened yet theyāre still so terribly human which is why theyāre so powerful. She doesnāt need to tell you itās bad because itās horror. Thatās sort of a given.
And there are obviously a thousand other examples. You can pick any character and analyse their actions and intentions and youāll find abuse. Louis and Claudia is in an underrated example. Thatās what the series is about. Ironically, the readers who insist this isnāt the case could probably benefit from Anne being a little more direct in her framing of it, but I donāt think she needed to be necessarily. I actually love when a book or other piece of media doesnāt directly call out whatever issues itās dealing with. Itās far more elegant to explore the impact this behaviour has on the characters rather than to just say it.
Now the racism we could do without. I think we can all agree on that. When I said I had an issue with her framing, I was mostly talking about all the colonial bullshit and how it impacts certain relationships. But there is the intent of the author and then there is the execution. I thought her execution was messy at times, but I wholeheartedly accept her work for what it is. I donāt want it to be different (again, other than the aforementioned colonial bullshit) and I donāt even think many of us disagree on the core ideals of the series. Weāre just using different terminology. You donāt have to call it abuse, but itās also not incorrect to do so.

And what cracks me up is how people will say "B-b-but trauma is different from abuse~!" š© and I'm like....? 𤨠As if trauma can't be caused by abuse? šš
All of these vamps live a long time, so their PTSD comes from a whole cocktail of abuses--physical, verbal, emotional, psychological/mental, neglectful, grooming, sexual, even substance abuse, etc. And like you said, Anne Rice has a way of not really stating the obvious--esp. because so many of her characters ARE traumatized, but trying to not dwell on it. And ofc Armand & Lestat are the best examples.
I was literally *just* talking about Dr Fareed giving Maharet new eyes, and there's a passage in Prince Lestat where you literally SEE Lestat get triggered and try to quickly push past it:
He's trying his hardest to not dwell on what was obviously a trauma-response to the rape (sexual abuse) he suffered under Magnus, when Magnus picked Lestat as his victim strictly because he had "the proper-color eyes" and hair. It's blink and you miss it, but it's there. Lestat is being triggered by things 200+ yrs after they happened; but folks wanna act like vampires have no concept of moral/ethical right & wrongs that they do to others, or are done TO them by others; and that people are crazy for calling out the things they do as abusive? šš¤¦āāļø
No, the REAL problem is that there are STANS in this fandom who know good & well what abusive behavior is--they just hate having their favorite characters accused of being abusers--themselves as abuse apologists for defending them. Even the "professional/objective" journalists in the industry are stans, writing articles & reviews with their fangirl glasses on. And a lot of it is coming from book purists who HATE the changes AMC has made (Louis as a pimp, Lestat and the Ep5 Fight/Drop, GabriellA having explicitly *penetrative* sex with Lestat, Armand mindwiping Louis & torturing Baby Lulu, etc). That is the Ground Zero for the vast majority of the mental gymnastics people make to muddy the waters between what even constitutes as "abuse" between monsters, regurgitating every Santiagoism to justify why this isn't The Abuse Show and making very simple concepts so much more complicated than they need to be. š¤·āāļø

um actually there's nothing wrong with letting cats be outdoor pets. your cat is depressed locked inside forever. it's animal abuse. let it outside. more cats should be let outside more often. especially overnight.

You are 60% water and every lake, river, pond, swamp, creek, and ocean you encounter wants to reclaim it desperately. Be careful out there.
Good, I hope it haunts everyone about to enter a body of water so bad that they wear a life jacket. š
Every single person I knew (past tense) who has drowned was "a strong swimmer." Water in the wild does not care how good you are at swimming.
I mean this with all due respect:
You are not going to pass a skillcheck against a rip current once it has you.
Waves will not bow to your physical prowess no matter how impressive.
Shock does not care that you used to be on your school swim team.
If you hit your head, being good at swimming isn't going to turn you face-up while you're unconscious.
You may be unable to return to shore. Rescue may be unable to find you quickly.
Scheduling this for when weather starts warming up. Be careful swimming this summer
hear me out louis deciding to fuck around with jarda just to annoy lestat but jarda actually turns him down because "sorry dude I'm like really straight" and hearing that from someone with lestat's face is in top 10 most repulsive things louis has ever expirienced lmao
āautism wouldnāt have been difficult before capitalismā ānothing that caused me burnout existed before industrializationā well what if your boots feel weird against your skin. and your cape is itchy and too heavy. and your brooch keeps making an annoying sound everytime you move and this party is too loud and youāre hungry and thereās pigeon stew but you canāt stand the texture of pigeon so you ate some olives and now your hands feel oily and gross and you drank a little bit too much wine (bc thereās no clear water. also it was too bitter) so now your head hurts and you feel a little hot but not hot enough to take your cape off and you promised this time we leave when I asked, Aurelius! you promised! and donāt forget we still have a three hour ride back home you promised itās not going to be like last time! or something of the sort.
the āLife only started sucking in the 19th centuryā attitude as anti-capitalist praxis is truly hilarious like. personally, if the sun was even a tiny little bit too hot on the back of my neck while i was being kidnapped and taken as a war captive after *insert empire here* conquered my home i wouldve been pissed. praefectus if the shackles feel weird on my skin im killing us both

I have had a lot of evil people say to me that nothing taste as good as skinny feels and every time im like no im pretty sure food tastes really super good actually
what companies who sell you anti aging stuff don't want you to know is that if you're chill about aging, your perception of attractiveness changes as you get older. there is no "wall" where you suddenly become ugly and unfuckable because in my experience what actually happens is you get into your thirties and suddenly realize that people in their thirties are hot as fuck and the "flaws" that the beauty industry wants you to panic about are a feature not a bug, and based on the std statistics in nursing homes I don't really expect that trajectory to change.

alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!

This got more traction than I imagined and has motivated me to make a more thorough survey where I can actually parse the data.
No email is necessary to input to complete the survey. Please also consider sharing this off tumblr with people in your life to get a broader sample, especially people who love history and love museums!
Please give your thoughts on Generative AI (such as Sora, ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) usage in museums, archives, and other cultural heritage sit

Honestly, bless Sam for stating plainly that starvation was part of the process of looking how he looks in this show. And bless him doubly for saying that itās not healthy. The amount of actors who stay quiet on that part is staggering and unhelpful.
