look i was a hangman fan, and i knew about the instagram interactions with marty for years. tweeted about it on and off and eventually had to stop because hangman fans didn’t care, only marty fans did which meant i was getting a bunch to very triggering rape apologism sent to me while absolutely NO ONE acknowledged the issue with hangman.
and yet, i still liked the character (fictional, not a real person) & liked his wrestling, so i still considered myself a hangman fan despite the real person behind that character being on my shitlist. hated all that crap about how “leftist” he supposedly is, but hey at least he was keeping his friendship with an admitted child sex predator relative quiet and was not using his platform to promote rape apologism.
that is, generally speaking, my standard for whether or not i’ll support someone whose work i enjoy but who sucks as a person (or might suck as a person) but is not known to be a rapist/abuser/etc themself. how are they using their platform? because i can’t know whether or not someone i do not know is actually a good person and i can (& have) drive myself crazy trying to figure it out, but i can know how they are using the platform that i am helping them have. so with pre-photo hangman, yeah, the real dude sucks, but aside from a few instagram likes and comments that barely anyone noticed, he was using his platform in generally pretty positive ways. even the photo didn’t really change much, since i already knew, and i was more annoyed at how many people had scrolled past posts from me & others and now acted shocked that he & marty were still friends.
and then the interview happened.
i still like his wrestling, i still like the fictional character that doesn’t exist if we assume, reasonably imo, that the interview was out of character.
but that man, the real man who actually exists and is friends with an actual child sex predator and raped an actual drunk teenager, is now using his platform to do rape apologism. bizarrely, he’s doing rape apologism for a man he publicly states he believes is guilty.
the wrestler known as “hangman” adam page is now on public record stating that he believes the allegations of sexual assault of a drunk teenager made against marty scurll, calling what marty did “abhorrent”, and yet IN THE SAME INTERVIEW did the classic “but he was always nice to me” rape apologism
and now he’s coming back.
back to rebuild his precious public image, back to grow the platform he now uses to do rape apologism.
and some of you are more than happy to help make sure this rape apologist and others like ospreay have as big of a platform as possible to spread their poisonous ideas.
and btw, don’t be surprised if how the bucks use their platform changes in the same way hangman’s did.
after all, plenty of you are telling them right now that publicly supporting and even doing open rape apologism for marty is perfectly safe
