Mostly TV Shows I Like

The whole metaverse can no longer be properly viewed without an account and I am definitely not making one just to see your contact info or opening hours.

Absolutely ridiculous on its face because it seems contradictory, but like… Scully wants to protect people from what she views as earthly sins — people hurting people, lying, cheating, stealing, killing — but it’s anchored in a place that’s spiritual. Mulder wants to protect people from the unbelievable, but it’s anchored in a place that’s very real, his baby sister being taken from him.

It’s the reason Mulder can turn around after everything outrageous he’s ever said and tell Scully to remain skeptical; it’s the reason Scully can scoff and whinge at all those outrageous things and then turn around and try to protect Mulder’s curiosity and belief and hope.

It would actually be more outrageous if the believer in all of the things the world tries to convince you AREN’T true also believed in the one thing everyone wants you to believe IS. The same way it’d be more outrageous if the skeptic believed in nothing, because a skeptic has the strongest faith of all. To be told that something is true again and again and still choose to turn away — to seek meaning elsewhere is the biggest act of faith there could possibly be. And faith in the principles espoused by a religion isn’t necessarily the same thing as faith in God itself.

It’s why, amidst all of that, the one thing Scully and Mulder will always agree on is believing in each other. Which is why they have to have that one little incongruence in character in the first place. It is, so it has to be.

Now, the way this goes is that I have everyone show up around 4:30pm. People show up, it's a big crowd, it's pretty warm out because the sun is still up and the mingling is great. People eat, share food, the kids run around in the trees and check out the lake, and we all just generally enjoy ourselves and catch up. Then the sun starts to go down.

People start getting under the pavilion, it starts getting a little chilly, and maybe those with really young kids start to pack up and say good-bye. This is usually when I light up the fire in the pavilion's fireplace and people will begin gathering around there. I let the grill burn down and sit down with everyone as everything gets a bit more mellow. Maybe we make s'mores or have cookies or something but this is usually were you start having more people say their good-byes and head out. That's how it goes for the next couple of hours, little dribbles of people winding up and heading on home until it's 9:30 at night and there's just a few people left in the pavilion in the woods sitting around a little fireplace quietly talking.

You know what? That's the best time at these things. Some years we'll be out there until almost midnight, just chatting quietly and staring into the coals. You learn things about people then, you hear interesting things, and you just feel closer.

So what does this have to do with fandom and moving on? Well, I see it like this. The show is still on, that's the early part of the day. Plenty of people around, lots of activity where art gets made, headcanons and meta fly fast and furious, and tons of fic gets written. Then the show ends, people are still creating but a few peel away, they have other things they have to do or just aren't interested in sticking around. Slowly but surely it goes until it's just a few people left.

That's when the interesting things really start coming out. You still have the other stuff but you start to get off the wall headcanons and wild meta, you get odd art, you get fic the person finally decided to write, and it's good. And hey, every once in a while, someone shows up late and you grab some food out of the cooler for them and warm up a burger for them over the coals while others grab a chair for them and you get them up to speed on the conversation and maybe show them some pictures from earlier in the night and they get to have some of that glow from earlier even if they missed the original.

Lost Girl: the most explicit one that I can think of right now. The main character is a bisexual succubus, and they did not shy away from the concept.

Orphan Black: one of the characters is a lesbian (she's not the lead, but Cosima's definitely a main character), and has an on again, off again, relationship with another character.

Wynnona Earp: I haven't watched it, but the lead character's younger sister (also a main character) is a lesbian.

Killjoys: I haven't seen this one mentioned in the notes, probably because the WLW characters are only major recurring characters instead of mains, but they are *major* recurring characters, especially in the last couple seasons. It's also by the same creators as Lost Girl.

Stargate Universe: A co-production with the US. The first Stargate show to have a lesbian main character.

Slo Pitch: a Canadian web series about a queer softball team that is adapted into a tv show set to start airing sometime this year. I haven't seen the web series, and the tv show isn't out yet, so I can't really speak to the representation.

Saving Hope: one of the mains, Dr. Maggie Lin, comes out as bisexual in Season 3 (although it doesn't come up as much as one might hope).

Queer as Folk (North America): a Canadian co-production with the US. I think two of the main characters are a WLW couple, but I haven't watched it.

Honourable mentions (either queer rep that isn't WLW, or minor LGBTQ characters):

Sort Of: a non-binary, first generation Pakistani-Canadian navigates cultural expectations and their identity.

Schitt's Creek: one of the main characters, David Rose, is bisexual.

Sanctuary: the lead, Dr. Helen Magnus, is confirmed bisexual in the last season, but the show ended before it went anywhere, so... honourable mention.

Murdoch Mysteries: one of the recurring characters Dr. Emily Grace, was confirmed bisexual in Season 8, but left the next season (I also hate her love interest, but that's not really relevant). Another recurring gay character, Det. Llewellyn Watts, was introduced in Season 10, but wasn't confirmend gay until Season 13. I want to take this opportunity to say that Watts is great, and formally petition gor him to be promoted to a main character.

Heartland: Apparently had it's first gay character in Seasons 14-18? Idk, I haven't watched it since I was a kid.

None of the above are as explicit as Heated Rivalry (except maybe Slo Pitch? Idk, it's not out yet), but Canada has been funding queer media for a while now, and it's great that people from other countries are seeing it!

Last week i was looking into one of my teen's homework when I noticed she was writing words she "wasn't supposed to know" in english (like "furthermore", for example. They only know very intermediary english) I got a bit mad for a second. I wear an "anti-AI" button all the time, i even told them before why i was anti-AI, yet she didn't listen to me and thought she could get away with it... But i decided to keep it cool because i didn't know why she would do this, since she never did.

Okay, one week after, this Wednesday, it was time for their class again and, when she arrived, i told her to come to my desk and asked her: "what is furthermore?" She went pale when she noticed the paper in my hands. I asked again: "darling, what is furthermore?" Then, she shuttered: "I don't know, teacher. I'm sorry, I had to ask Gemini because I had no time..." then I sat her down, she was clearly upset (she is just 13) and I asked her what happened. "I didn't have any time left because of my exams and there were too many units to go through. So I asked my mom to help me and she told me to use ChatGPT but I asked google instead." Okay. So I looked into her eyes and told her it was okay, that she didn't need to be upset, but she would have to re-do that paper and bring it back to me by the next week. I told her she didn't need google or gpt to do her work, because she got a very high score at her english exam (both at school and at the course). She got right back on her feet and we started class as normal.

And you know what? The author responded! They were really happy to get the comment.

This is why you should comment on older fics. Even if the author doesn't respond, your comment can make someone really happy.
