You shouldn't have to read any story in order if you don't want. While some do have what you call spoilers to other stories before them I still think you can read out of order and still enjoy the ones before. The one caveat on that is you should probably read The Long Shadow of Our Pasts stories in order.
I mostly write post-season five stuff with a Church Camp AU thrown in for good measure. It's got a mix of a things but mostly it's angst with a happy ending or fluff.
Four of my series are part of a post-season five linked series. It starts with The Lyrical Anthology, continues in Finn and the Moms of Power, moves to The Heir Apparent, and is currently in progress with Cutting Edge Tradition. The last two are heavy on OC so be aware of that if you jump in at that point.
In Progress Series
Cutting Edge Tradition
Series Page: https://archiveofourown.org/series/3653449
Number four in my post-season five series (starting with The Lyrical Anthology, then Finn and the Moms of Power, and then The Heir Apparent). Someone once said, as I got further and further from the end of the show, that I was going to be writing about the grandkids of the original characters. I laughed because I had no plans to do that. Anyways, this is the story of Puffin, granddaughter to Scorpia and Perfuma, as she navigates being a new princess and everything that entails. It takes place thirty to forty years after the end of the show. It also features a pre-show look at what happened to cause the fall of the last king of the Scorpioni with appearances by Hordak and some of the other Horde characters such as Octavia and Cobalt. Yes, I have plans to return to this one day
Completed Series
The Lyrical Anthology
Series Page: https://archiveofourown.org/series/1767634
Angst, fluff, emotional hurt/comfort, highs and lows of Adora and Catra as well as the other princesses navigating the aftermath of the fall of Prime. These are all based off lyrics/titles of songs that I felt fit the tone of the story in some way. This includes the first fic I ever wrote as well as the beginning to what turned into my post-Season Five series of stories that continues on in Finn and the Moms of Power, then The Heir Apparent, and then Cutting Edge Tradition.
Finn and the Moms of Power
Series Page: https://archiveofourown.org/series/1862320
A series of fics about Finn living with and being raised by Catra and Adora. A good mix of fluff, angst, slice of life, and one really, really long fic and a second just about as long. Like The Lyrical Anthology, you can read this in just about any order though I would recommend at least reading the longer stories in order. I feel like this is where I really got my legs under me as a writer and also where I really started using OC (hello, Izzy, Oak, and Artho). Also the first time that someone gave a ship name to one of my creations (still very proud of that). Wrapped up now and second in my overarching post-season five series with the first being The Lyrical Anthology, the third being The Heir Apparent, and the fourth being Cutting Edge Tradition.
The Heir Apparent
Series Page: https://archiveofourown.org/series/2317286
The third in my post season five series covering the story of Capella, princess of Bright Moon and Bow and Glimmer's daughter. This is a bit more angsty than the previous series and this is also where original characters really start to take over the plots since the main characters from the show are in their forties or so. They're still important to the plot but it's driven by the younger generation (damn, I love Cappe). This also holds my record of longest fic I've ever written (245k words) and has the second longest as well. All wrapped up now and has one of my favorite villains I've ever written in it as well as one of my favorite mike drop moments. This would be third in my overarching post-season five series with the first two being The Lyrical Anthology and Finn and the Moms of Power and the fourth being Cutting Edge Tradition. When it comes to reading order, I'd actually recommend reading this one in order, though you could skip the short stories and dive right into the main fic, The Heir Apparent, and then go on to Illusions and not have a problem.
When the Music's Over
Series Page: https://archiveofourown.org/series/3230076
A series of fics that explores the idea that after the war, Catra and Adora's relationship continued to have problems because they didn't reach out for help. It starts a little a year after they broke up. Head the tag warnings on this one.
Camp Bright Moon
Series Page: https://archiveofourown.org/series/2827840
An AU church camp series that grew out of my fic, Camp Horde for the Lord (https://archiveofourown.org/works/37602166/chapters/93858844), which is the first in this series now. The rest of the fics are going to be more fluff and less angst and center more around Camp Bright Moon and it's residents, both old and new. The fics weren't all fluff. I don't know why I even write, "Don't worry, the rest will be fluffy!" I know better. I come back to this one a lot and the last story never fails to make me cry even though I know what's coming. I will say they may be angst but they have happy endings. Also has my favorite bookmark comment from Cheesybiscuit on AO3 that said, "A funny and touching story about indoctrination, love, religious experience, and the power of being a visibly queer person in the world. I love this!"
The Long Shadow of Our Pasts
Series Page: https://archiveofourown.org/series/2088336
Another stand alone series that's not tied into my big post-season five canon. It’ll have some of the same themes and headcanons though, such as Finn being adopted, but it’s going to have one big difference and that’s Shadow Weaver is still around. I’m not really giving away a spoiler since the first work literally starts with Adora finding her. Get ready to hate Shadow Weaver more than you thought possible.
Rage Against the Dying of the Light
Series Page: https://archiveofourown.org/series/2347258
A series about Catra, Adora, Kyle, Lonnie, and Rogelio immediately after the war and how they deal with all the issues they've had. As should be apparent, this will have an abundance of emotional hurt/comfort and themes of dealing with abuse and neglect.
Ongoing Series
These are series that aren't ever going to wrap up. It's either miscellaneous stuff that doesn't fit in the others (but could be related to others) or explicitly side bits to the other stories.
Miscellaneous Works
Series Page: https://archiveofourown.org/series/2837455
These are all my works that don't fit into my series. That doesn't mean they can't be referenced in other series, an example being a small part of Adora’s Journals: Southern Plumeria Survey showed up in one of my big fics, The Heir Apparent, but that does mean for the most part they're stand alone.
The In-Between
Series Page: https://archiveofourown.org/series/3441889
This series contains little stories that fit between other stories in my series. It came about because I was feeling nostalgic for Finn and the Moms of Power but didn't want to re-start the series. You don't have to know any of the series to read things in here, I believe they pretty much stand on their own but as always, can't hurt.

noticed another lil split second while editing some clips for an amv
very possibly not intentional, it might just be how it was animated, but there's a blip while adora's saying "i can't just leave her there" where her eyes almost seem to flash that blue she-ra shine as she opens them to look up at glimmer
it might be nothing, but i like to think our gurl's already boutta burst into her true she-ra just at the thought of how bad she wants her cat back

When putting together the merch spreadsheet it struck me how incredibly non-canon a lot of the additional material is, even when officially licensed, but that some people don't know about it, so I thought I'd make a quick master list of external material some people might cite for information and how much stock you should put in that.
To be clear, if you want to use the non-canon material to inspire you or as part of your fanfiction, you absolutely can, you just can't assert that it's canon, that your reading is evidence-based, or that other readings are wrong. This covers books, promotional videos, and crew information.
Tracy West chapter book series and Rebel Princess Guide: Non-canon
Tracy West never saw the show or even spoke to someone on the crew. Dreamworks sent her some development material, such as the show bible, and she wrote her books based on that. It is impossible to know if any new detail she gives is internal canon knowledge, something that was once in consideration but has since been changed and thus is no longer canon, or is a complete invention she made to fill in a gap (that might not actually exist but she wasn't given the answer in that material) or serve the specific story she was telling.
For instance, we know Octavia's canon age is late 20s at the earliest and likely her 30s because of S1EP11, but Tracy didn't, so she said she was in the same class as Catra and Adora. This is a standard process for these kinds of books and she was doing her job, a good example of this from an author interview is from the Descendants book series. The movie never acknowledges that many of the villain characters died in their original movie. The assigned chapter book author noticed this and felt like it was a plot hole, so she - of her own invention and with no input from any movie writer - inserted the detail that the villains had all been resurrected from the dead by the crown to be imprisoned on the island in the book. Which I think is hilarious btw but if I was a movie writer and that conflicted with my vision it would drive me nuts to see people mentioning it as a "fun fact" online.
Anything "new" in the Tracy West novels could have a similar source. It is also verified fact that ND... let's go with "obscured intent" in the initial show materials by referring to Catra as a scrappy little sister character and let people fill in there was a "sister" relationship between Adora and Catra even though that was never his intent because he was immediately shut down when he stuck a toe in the water by calling Spinnerella and Netossa, two minor characters, wives. This is why the line about them being like sisters is included in the early copies of the books. Tracy West wrote the books keeping in mind the canon details she was aware of, but they were limited and the direction she takes her stories cannot be used to infer anything about canon.
Listen, I love the letter Adora wrote Catra inside the Rebel Princess Guide and I like to talk about it as its own thing, but that letter is just Tracy's interpretation of where Adora was at that point in the story, it's not actually part of the canon.
The Legend of the Fire Princess graphic novel: Non-canon
No one from crew was involved with the graphic novel. It was likely written in a similar way to the Tracy West books (although to my knowledge no one has contacted these authors to confirm like with Tracy). The story was written by Gigi D.G., drawn by Paulina Ganucheau, colored by Eva de la Cruz, and lettered by B.C. Peterschmidt. ND Stevenson was NOT involved in this graphic novel at all. He is always credited prominently, but when you read the credit, it is "based on stories by ND Stevenson" and they're using his name because he's the name people are more likely to see and go "oh, I want to read that".
Like the Tracy West books, this graphic novel is based on the canon knowledge available to the writers at the time but the "new details" cannot be used to extrapolate anything about the show. This is easily proven with one fact: the novel depicts a map of Etheria that is from the original show because it was easily accessible, and we KNOW it's not accurate to the reboot. You can do this with logic based on where some of the areas of the reboot are shown to connect, but here's the easiest total disqualification: the OG map (shown below, above the graphic novel's version) has the Valley of the Lost (left) depicted on the opposite side of the planet from the Crimson Waste (right), and it's INSIDE the Crimson Waste in the reboot, as shown in S4EP2, which aired 4 months before the graphic novel's release. Of course the graphic novel was drawn prior to its release, but that's proof no one from the show was involved with the novel, because they would have realized they made a massive error with the geography long before the episodes aired.
The reboot is a radial land mass with the Whispering Woods in the middle, it's not this butterfly design centered on the Fright Zone. This graphic novel has a ton of information about the magic system but we have absolutely no reason to think that's based on canon when the authors didn't have even the map the writers used. Fun to play with, go for it, but it's not evidence for canon.
Rebel Recruitment shorts: Non-canon, but closer
These were written by show writers and voiced by the official VAs, and thus are the closest to canon we've come thus far, but it's pretty clear these are not intended to be taken as serious canon since they show the cast creating social media videos, and if anything equivalent to it that could distribute these videos existed in canon, we would have had some indication of it by the end of the show. It's promotional content and the writer for a short said it was a fun project to do, but it's not meant to be taken seriously.
Mattel-produced birthday short (doll promotion): Non-canon
I don't have to get into this right. It's a YouTube commercial waving dolls around to get little kids to imagine what play pretend they could have if they bought the dolls (not knowing at the time that the play pretend would be imagining they had the dolls at all after Target tried to cancel the release. It's fine I'm fine. I don't want to talk about it. When I get my hands on you, Target......). Um, I mean, the crew was not involved in it, it contradicts other official material, etc.
Crew statements outside of the show: Varies
Look, if you hate Word of God (information not communicated within the text but stated by creators outside of it) and don't want to use it, that's fine and valid, but sometimes it does provide important context and ignoring it is willful misinterpretation of the story. And sometimes ND makes a joke and the fandom never lets it go lol, so lets get into some examples and then some specifics.
Because She-ra is a collaborative project created by an entire team and censored by an entire corporation, there is "canon material" that is not canon or actively contradicts other canon. Take for example Spinnerella and Netossa being pitched as wives and ND being told he doesn't have to change that fact but he can never state it, which is how we end up with them just.... always being with each other in S1-S3, and them having a date night in S4 as ND railed on executives to tell his story, and Netossa explicitly calling Spinnerella that in S5 after ND got approval. If he hadn't gotten that approval, this would still be canon, because it only wouldn't be present due to censorship.
An example of that is Perfuma. Perfuma was intended by her character designer to be a trans woman, but due to the above situation they knew it wouldn't be allowed, so there wasn't much they could do. To me, this is the intent, but it's a small external statement, and it gets into another complicating factor: her character designer said this. Not ND, or Jen, or Shane, or Kiki, so she wasn't written with that perspective behind anything except her design.
An example of how the different crew member's viewpoints diverge in canon can be seen in The Portal. Micah's final line is "Wait, Angella, I'm not-" and then he gets eaten by the portal's void. Josie Campbell wrote this episode. ND Stevenson wrote the previous one (Remember). Josie and ND were both in the audio booth with Micah's voice actor (Daniel Dae Kim). Josie didn't like the takes they were getting and so she asked Daniel to read the full line and they'd just cut him off, at which point ND asked Josie "What full line"? and Josie replied "oh, it's 'Wait, Angella, I'm not dead'". ND didn't know that was how Josie had originally written the line. He has talked about this in interviews before, and it's a good example of how canon is written by multiple perspectives and if you ask every single person on the crew a question you are not going to get one answer, because ND would have said the rest of the line was something different if you asked him before that.
Another funnier example is Entrapta's hair. Some of the crew think it's magic and some think it's tech. It's very obviously magic but I digress, all this adds up to statements made external to the show being far less dependable than anything that passed final review, but there are some things that 1) would be included if they could be (due to censorship, time constraints, etc) or that 2) were never really meant to be included but were being kept in mind while writing the characters.
One example of this is the timeline. The writers room knew they were planning for the show to span roughly 2-3 years, but which end of the scale each writer falls on will vary and this isn't explicitly stated in canon. This is information the writers were working from that has been communicated to us and it's fine not to use it, but it's clearly the canon intent even if it's only subtly communicated within the show by the character designs filling out as they age (except Frosta, sorry, you have to be the relatable younger kid character even if you should be 14 now LOL).
The final complicating factor is ND likes to joke a lot and people are very bad at telling what the jokes are, so I made a roundup of some various statements the crew has made that I've seen be referenced as fact before and how canon they are, and then it got WAY too long, so it's under the cut below if you're interested.
If I remember who or where someone said it I'll include it, but most of the time it's "ND I think" or "some con panel/livestream". Extremely non-exhaustive list:
The show spans 2-3 years: Canon, discussed above. Was first mentioned at a con panel, I believe.
Catra isn't her real name (Elizabeth): Non-canon, come on guys, this was obviously a joke by ND (also a con panel I think).
Catra's full name is Applesauce Meowmeow: Non-canon, same as above. Adora Happysmile Rainbowfist is also an invention by fans, it came from Tumblr after the write-up from the con where they crew joked about Catra's last name was posted.
Catra came to the Horde in a crate: Non-canon. ND stated this as a vague idea for a backstory (leading to the Applesauce gag), but he also said he didn't really know, and likely every member of crew has a different backstory. You can use this one, but it's only semi-canon even to ND. It's mostly just popularly accepted.
Hordak is 6'9" (and by extension, Scorpia and She-ra are similar): Canon ig? This was stated by his character designer, who would be the final authority on this, and they even provided exact measurements, but Hordak is confirmed to be taller than She-ra by his character sheet (though he is wearing low heels) and She-ra is referenced as "seven feet tall". This could be a case of different people on crew having different perspectives while writing (I doubt those exact measurements were sent around in a memo and the character sheets don't have numbers on them), or just rounding up, or an exaggeration by the characters themselves within canon due to the stark difference in height. It does make logical sense with Scorpia, though, who is almost the same height as She-ra and would be pretty shocking to be naturally 7 feet. I'm going to just stick with rounding up personally. Character sheets below show the three characters' heights relative to each other, She-ra is likely near 6'6" if that measurement included his heels and near 6'9" if it didn't, and Scorpia is within an inch or two of whatever She-ra is.
Adora is 2-3 inches taller than Catra: Semi-canon. Stated by a crew member (cannot for the life of me remember who, but not their designer I don't think) and it adds up with their character sheet (below), but their heights relative to each other also change by scene, Adora is wearing shoes (that we don't know are included or not), and we don't have nearly as firm of a statement about this as we have with Hordak's exact measurements.
All the main characters (except Frosta) are 18+ at the start of the show: Canon. Beyond the fact that Adora leaving the Horde is a direct analog for ND's journey when he left for college and discovered gay people weren't what his church told him (using context from the author's life to interpret the text), it was also stated at cons and on Twitter multiple times (even prior to the release of season one with the voting tweet) and by multiple members of crew. It would have been a writer's room fact that they all were working with a loose understanding of, but different members of crew would probably give you different exact ages (like different exact heights lol), which is why I just stick with 18+ above.
Adora is older than Catra: Non-canon. This was stated by ND Stevenson on the BLM livestream in 2020. He also stated seconds prior "I've never thought about it", and answered both before locking in Adora as his final answer. This is an example of classic "Word of God" where nothing in the show was written with this understanding. Different members of crew would probably give you different answers.
Sea Hawk is from the all-male continent Brotheria on the dark side of Etheria: Non-canon. If you've never heard this before I probably just sounded insane. This is the kind of shit ND jokes about okay it's here as an example, I haven't actually heard someone reference it as fact, I mostly want to make other people read that sentence. It was a writer's room joke when someone asked where Sea Hawk was referring to when he said people used to think he was cool where he was from.
Magicats are an explorer race that settled on Etheria: Canon. This was stated by ND on the BLM livestream. The writers hadn't originally thought too much about it when planning season one, but when they saw the fanbase start speculating on it after the release, they decided they needed to actually figure out that aspect of canon (unlike Sea Hawk's hometown), and they decided that magicats were an explorer race from another planet who, like the First Ones, came and settled on Etheria (after they had already begun colonization). Despite this not being decided for season one, it became verified canon as of season 5, where one of Horde Prime's video feeds shows the magicat homeworld fighting back (which is another good example of how the canon changes).
And a names rundown. These are all names for background characters that weren't addressed as such in the show. For most of these, if a member of crew stated their name I see no reason to assume this is not internal canon knowledge (the script had to refer to them somehow) and should be treated as such:
Bright Moon's General (black haired lady with the scar across her nose, only ever called General in the show): Juliet, canon. Stated by ND on Twitter.
Sea Hawk's Ex (from Perils of Peekablue): Falcon, canon. Stated by ND on Twitter. Also the fact he's an ex lol.
Blue/green Horde Commander (first seen in S1EP1 leading the training exercise that Catra misses the start of): Cobalt, non-canon. This comes from the Tracy West novels. It could be he is named this in the reference materials she had, though, so if you want to use it as the best name we have, go for it (I do), but she also could have made up a name because she needed to be able to reference the guy in the episode one summary that was just listed as "Force Captain".
Blue/green slug-like finfolk on Admiral Scurvy's cew: Leech, canon. Stated by Ray on Tumblr.
Flamepoint magicat on Admiral Scurvy's crew: Squall, canon. Stated by Shane in an interview.
I'm sure there are more, but that's all I can think of right now and I'm not going to go digging even further for crew statements and stuff (like, I have some of these tweets I'm referencing backed up, but this post would take ten thousand years if I dug through all the screenshots, go use Twitter I wanna write fanfiction now 😭). If I did somehow miss something that someone might take as additional canon story (like the Rebel Recruitment videos), though, let me know. Especially because I have no idea what that would even be and I want my hands on it
From HeroTheHardWay’s fanfic As Long As We Stay Together (If We Just Stay Together). It’s such a unique catradora fic: they’re estranged college roommates, best friends, and NCAA hockey players who are now astrophysicists stationed together in Antarctica.

Just wanted to share with someone who I knew would appreciate; we had a virtual lunch hang out at my work, and my coworker mentioned her mom's dog, a little blonde Pomeranian named Adora. I apparently am the first person in their five ish years of owning that dog that got the reference in her name lmao, to the delight of both coworker and her mom.
omg!!!
also lol'ing at her being a pomeranian??? they do tend to be really sweet, friendly, playful dogs (at least, the ones I've met) but they're also tiny dogs who are convinced they're much bigger!
if I was outside and heard someone call their dog Adora I would turn my head so fast I'd get whiplash pfft
