in absolute tears about the pride module at my work
HOLY SHIT GUYS, I WAS INSPIRED BY THIS POST TO TRY MAKE THE SONG AND YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE THE SCREAM I SCRUMPT WHEN I DRAGGED THE TRAINING AUDIO OVER THE BACKING TRACK AND IT LINED UP PERFECTLY
Tempted to actually put this on spotify so I can secretly stream it at work...
Tagging @batshit-auspol because as an Australian you're the only big account I know who might share (sorry).
happy first day of pride everyone
Squatters' rights apply to grandmas. If someone's not visiting and looking after their grandma, but you will, after a set amount of time once you've settled in, that's your grandma now.
That is in fact part of the story in THE MIDNIGHT SHIFT by Seon-Ran Cheon.
Religion in fantasy worlds: Everyone believes the exact same things about Green Nature Goddess and has official rituals for her that are the same everywhere
Religion irl: Technically it’s heresy for me to worship this skeleton but my spiritual advisor said that it’s legit so I’m gonna keep giving it offerings of yogurt
Religion in fantasy worlds: We’ve gotta pour water over this statue or else the god will get angry
Religion irl: We’ve gotta pour water over this statue? Why? Idk man that’s just what you do. Just do it alright.
Religion in fantasy worlds: These are the rules. The rules are law. Nobody can break the rules.
Religion irl: Okay you say that there are “rules” but how exactly are we defining “rules” here? Like is a suggestion a rule? How are we defining suggestion? No come back. Listen. Are we going by nuance in the original language or are translations fine or-
its so weird to me that cis people will dislike their name so ardently and yet. not change it. you guys know that’s an option, right. no one can make you keep the shit name your mom gave you. no, not even her.
One of my friends in undergrad changed his name because he didn’t want to bear the name of his abusive and absent father. It’s been years since he did it, and he still says that it was the single best decision of his life.
One of my friends in high school changed his named as soon as he turned 18, so that the ethnic name his family gave him was finally the name reflected on all of his paperwork. He told me that he understood why his parents had given him an “English” name, but that he felt that if he needed to assimilate in order to succeed, then that was a type of success that he didn’t want.
When I was on my way home from the courthouse after changing my own name, I got into a conversation with my rideshare driver, who was extremely interested once I told him what I was in court for, and wanted to know how I’d done it, how much it cost, was it difficult, etc. It turned out that his girlfriend had chosen the name “Yo-yo” when she came to the United States, unaware of how rare that was as a name, and that she was frequently made fun of because of it. Neither one of them had realized that a name change was so easy, and he told me he was excited to let her know that she had options.
There was an intern at a summer job I had once, who changed her name to be the same name, but a different spelling. She said that she had no idea why her parents had spelled her name so oddly to begin with, and suspected that it was just an honest mistake either by them or by some nurse, but it had been a headache for her entire life, and it was a huge relief to not need to be correcting people’s spelling on important documents anymore.
One of my exes legally changed his name to have an exclamation point, because he liked to sign his name with an exclamation point.
You can always change your name if you don’t like it. You always have that option. It doesn’t matter why – it can be conformist or anti-assimilationist, serious or silly, a minor change or a major change. Your name is yours, and you have every right to change it to be whatever you want.
I feel like not enough people realize how many boomer women did change their first names when they got married, because they were changing their name anyways. My mother in law changed her spelling. My mom made going by her middle name official. This has actually been normal for decades but it was sometimes obscured by other processes.
There is a long list of gifts that the trans community has given the cis community. One of them is the knowledge that names can be changed, that you're not required to stick with the name (or nickname) your parents gave you, and -- most importantly -- that your preferences about your own name are binding. If you tell people you want to be called something, that's what they should call you.
I do in fact know cis people who hated their name for years, who realized abruptly one day that they didn't have to change their gender in order to change their name. Name changes are for everyone who wants them! If you hate your name, you can change it legally OR you can tell everyone who knows you that you want to be called [new name] and keep your wallet name the same. Your name is valid either way!

“Haha remember when murder-hornets were gonna be a thing? What a nothingburger.”
Yes, because the Washington state government activated like a sleeper-cell and ruthlessly, systematically hunted them down and annihilated them.
“Y2K came to nothing amirite?”
Yes because an army of software engineers working around the clock, losing sleep, and busting ass till the last minute prevented it from happening.
“Remember the hole in the ozone layer?”
You mean the one that was fixed through rigorous world wide government action?
One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those “it’s gonna be an apocalypse” disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.
The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.
And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.
And I refuse to let the cynics own a chunk of my heart.
Happy Smallpox Eradication Day
So ,I’m a music teacher and every year we have what are called “walk through observations”. Basically, this means that 4 times a year the principal or vice principal comes into my class to assess my teaching. Fine. Sure. No problem. Well, today I was doing an activity with my 1st graders called “Musical Groceries”. Basically, they make up a fake shopping list and then together we figure out what the rhythm of the words on the list is. To do that, a small group of students plays the beat on the conga drum while the rest of the students move around the room while chanting the word. It sounds weird but it’s a great way for the kids to figure out the relationship between syllables and rhythm. They quickly get bored of walking the rhythm so I let them come up with their own ways of moving around the room.( skipping, hopping, etc) One student suggested they hop around the room like frogs, way down low to the ground. Okay fine. Or it was fine until my vice principal walked in to do my observation only to find 20 seven year olds hopping around the room like a hoard of little hob-goblins, rhythmically chanting “BREAD! BREAD! BREAD!” while five other kids played ominous beats in a drum circle. I have never seen anyone look so confused in my life and I really don’t want to know the rating I got on my observation.
I don't know which of you needs to hear this but "narc" is not short for "narcissist" when someone calls you a "narc" for snitching they are calling you a "narcotics officer"
technically narc isnt even short for narcotics officer its just cant for Cop, I believe Roma in origin
I read years ago in a book that it was derived from nakk, Romani for nose, as in someone who always has their nose in other people's business
ITS DERIVED FROM "NARCO" AS IN "NARCOTICS" WHAT FUCKING BOOK
Okay you know what pulling back on my derision because i can see how this mistake would be made but narc and nark are etymologically unrelated
Etymology is always doing some shit like this
Convergent evolution.
Linguistic crab
Two entire linguistic traditions have merged to remind you not to be a fuckin narc

This week I've had to fill out a lot of forms with this mandatory question:
Which feels like "there are only two genders" wearing a woke hat
i got this one a few days ago
A personal fave I came across
I have a contribution courtesy of my ex-dentist
I'll never forget this one.
Okay, I have to admit: I have never considered the gender of individual body parts and you know, my teeth might be nonbinary and my feet are definitely masc-presenting. My pronouns are she/her, though.

Ok so like in a heist movie, Murderbot is in the femme fatale dress but for bots and systems. I mean how much of its hacking is literally just going up to systems and saying "hey don't worry about it, kitten, I totally already work here :)"
This man took so much longer to crack than I would have what a PROFESSIONAL

This was filmed at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which rescues, rehabilitates, and releases orphaned elephants in Kenya (among other conservation efforts). Charity Navigator has given it a 4/4 star rating, and you can make donations here or “adopt” a baby elephant here.
THANK YOU FOR THIS IMPORTANT ADDITION.
I have enjoyed this video so much and am very happy to share ways to help the babies!!
That man held it in until he knew for a fact that they’d need another take anyway, and not a moment less.
I have this saved on instagram and watch it whenever i need a pick-me-up

The very best thing about The Phantom of the Opera is that it shows us a possibly supernatural occurrence, then gives us a natural explanation that is infinitely crazier than the supernatural one would have been.
What if there was a ghost in the opera house that was killing people?
Requires you to accept the existence of ghosts, but otherwise is a straightforward story.
What if the chief contractor who built the opera house was a deformed circus freak who used his experience building palaces and torture chambers for sultans to keep building secret passageways and torture chambers in the basement when construction halted during the Franco-Prussian War, and then kept living down there working on an opera and killing and blackmailing people who crossed him and also training a pretty opera singer that he wants to marry?
There is nothing in the world that could have prepared me to expect even half of that.
@o-lei-o-lai-o-lord you are so right about this
Honestly, this explains so much about Christine's perspective too when you think about it.
My father sent me a guardian angel from Heaven to guide and comfort me in his absence: "Okay, not something that happens every day, but that is what guardian angels are supposed to do and Dad did indicate something like this would happen."
A hideously disfigured renaissance man, having all the natural skills and education to build himself a secret villain lair in a public building, extort enormous amounts of money from its management, and convince everyone he's a ghost, has developed a massive crush on me and has decided to express that through manipulation, kidnapping, and murder: "I cannot even begin to tell you how much this was not on my Bingo card."
Well then.
as a former escape room host i highly recommend doing an escape room as a first date. its a great way to learn how ppl react under pressure and how well they collaborate with you right off the bat. also more than once ive seen people enter an escape room as a couple and exit broken up LOL its a fantastic litmus test
sorry to broadcast ur tags but this is also a valuable part of the litmus test! it seems like you learned a lot about how this person makes you feel in their social group. they didn't go out of their way to include you, and neither did their friends. therefore you can come to a pretty good conclusion about how you might feel being part of their life outside of an escape room; someone who doesnt include you or your feelings in a game is likely going to do the same in other situations
An experiment with a clear negative outcome is still a successful experiment.
OK, but also, I have heard a story of a guy who went to an Escape Room, learned all the secrets, tipped well, and takes all his dates to *that* *specific* Escape Room. Without telling them he's done it before (many, many times).

Why parents have a strange need to hold our phone when we show them some pictures?
I showed this post to my mum and she grabbed my phone to read it and just stood there defeated
OK look, here's the thing, I'm 52 and my eyes are shit. I have the fancy progressive-lens glasses and they let me be Basically Functional but if I want to look at something small, I often have to flip my glasses up and then close one eye and hold the thing a precise distance away in order to see the detail or read any of the words. Even if I *don't* have to move my glasses out of the way to see it, I often need to hold it a very precise distance away, at the right angle so I don't get any reflection. "Holding your phone to see your pictures" is an accessibility practice, I'm not just trying to be nosy!
please do yourself a favor & watch this rock climbing–themed drag king/burlesque performance set to “roxanne” by the police with all the lyrics but “rox” edited out
