hermes in hadestown is the exact opposite of an unreliable narrator. a tortured narrator. a little *too* reliable. incredibly aware of exactly what is happening at any given moment, vaguely spoiling it for you in the beginning, despairing every second of it. but ultimately motivated to continue to tell the story over and over and over with a smiling face for the sake of the audience, and for the sake of the characters themselves, singing it again to keep them alive. knowing how it will end, but singing it again so that the cycle may restart and eurydice may come back to life. enduring the misery of it all, over and over, holding the knowledge of what will come to pass but continuing anyway to see orpheus happy just one more time before it all goes down in flames again.

Advice From a Librarian to Combat the U.S. Literacy Crisis #1:
If you don't read books: Read a book. Read any book. Read a book you loved when you were a kid. Read a book that interests you now. Read an entire collection of poetry or essays and think about why the author or editor arranged those works in that order. Read an erotic novel. Read nonfiction. Read graphic novels or manga. Read a kids' chapter book or a YA novel. Read a book digitally. Read a book on paper. Read an audiobook and really focus on it - if you notice yourself spacing out, scroll back to the last words you remember and try listening again. Read any book. And then when you finish it, celebrate for a minute (get those endorphins going!) and then read another one.
If you read books: Try reading a book that intimidates you. Maybe it's thick. Maybe it uses archaic language. Maybe it's a book that was translated from a language you don't speak into a language you do speak. Maybe it's a genre you don't normally read. Maybe it's the same kind of book as always, but you put your phone away and really focus on reading for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. (I know I've been struggling with this.) What scares you about reading? What challenges have you been avoiding? Try getting out of your comfort zone just a tiny bit, celebrate for a minute, and then try again.
I know this is from Australia but when I first saw the words “Victorian man” all I could think of was this:
To be fair imagine you just arrived in 2018 from Victorian England and discovered Take On Me, what are you supposed to do, not blast it loud enough for your family to hear it all the way back in 1876?
reblog this and tag it with roughly half your url + half of prev's url. GO

Does anyone else get pissed off when you wake up just as you were making significant progress in some bullshit task you had to do in a dream? Like great now I did all that shit for nothing
Hello Inklings ✨️,
It is I, @secret--psalms--saturn , your second in command, leader for 2026. For any asks and posts I post or answer, I will sign it as “Secret Saturn”. You can refer me by Saturn or Vana.
***Just note I can ONLY answer Asks and posts, DM’s will only show up to our og admin. She will see it and can respond, but I am trying to lighten her load!***
It’s an honor to be continuing the tradition of the inklings challlenge. For many years, this has been an event I had been looking forward to each October (and other holidays!) and wanted to see it continue this year. We are very thankful to our friend who has ran this thus far, and now is taking some much deserved rest to devote her time to other priorities.
I will be trying to do this year as similiar as possible to the previous years. I will probably be copying and pasting posts, announcing the event on September 1st, and posting the official posts + teams October 1st.
Right now, I appreciate any help! I am simmering on topics for this year, and have gotten good suggestions already. If you’d like to input, feel free to reply to this post or you can vote/suggest on our discord server! If you’d like to join, please message me on my personal blog (tagged above) or I can reach out to you if you’d reply to this post with interest.
This year will be possible through YOUR participation, whether it be 1 or 1000 words. Feel free to peruse the inkling’s challenge blog, check out past stories and topics.
I look forward to this year!
Thanks so much,
Secret Saturn
Thank you so much for taking over! The Inklings Challenge is very dear to me, and I'm grateful to see it continuing in such good hands!
I will add that I am NOT able to receive DMs from this blog anymore. It seems that putting multiple members on a blog removes the ability to send DMs. So the only way to contact the Inklings Challenge blog will be through reblogs, comments, and asks.
There's an awful trend in reading that's this CinemaSins kind of rejection of abstract concepts and suspension of disbelief, that makes people say it's bad writing when authors use descriptions that aren't immediately one to one with physical reality.
Like it's bad when a "tattoo is undulating" (as opposed to... "drawn in a wave like pattern on the skin"?), or when hair is "wet wheat from a late Summer field" (as opposed to "sort of brownish light yellow that dries lighter, but is not actual wheat stalks growing on someone's head but kind of reminiscent of the color and texture"?), or when when ice cream tastes like midnight at the fair" (as opposed to "ice cream flavour bringing back memories of undefined ice cream flavours that are individually popular but always tied to a memory of late evening at the fair ground and probably smelling vaguely like popcorn and sugar"?).
Please. We have to get back to understanding abstract descriptions that evoke feelings and memories and mental images or things we haven't experienced yet. This hyper utilitarian way of reading and judging text is killing fiction. it's robbing you of experiencing things you haven't actually personally experienced.
Come and see the Magdalene! The loveliest of ladies, With hair as soft and dark as death, And eyes as deep as Hades.
Come and see the Magdalene, She dances like a flame; Her cheeks are flushed with passion's fire (Or-- could it be-- with shame?)
Come and hear the Magdalene, Her song is like a lark! (But if you pass her house at night, She's shrieking in the dark.)
Come and see the Magdalene-- A Man has come to town, They say that He so touched her heart, She wept upon the ground.
They say they saw the Magdalene, The prettiest of girls, A-weeping, wash His dusty feet, And dry them with her curls.
Have you seen the Magdalene? She hardly looks the same-- Her cheeks and eyes glow brighter now With holier fire than shame.
Look at her, the Magdalene, She's like a girl in love, For she belonged to death, but now She lives with Him above.
Did you see the Magdalene? They took her Love away; They say that He was Crucified, And that He died today.
And did you hear the Magdalene, A-weeping for her Christ? They say she knelt beneath His Cross; No other place sufficed.
Listen to the Magdalene! She stole away at dawn, But when she came to see His tomb, She found His body gone!
See the weeping Magdalene, She asks where He could be; But if she'd wipe her tears away, Her grief-blind eyes could see--
Rejoice, dear Mary Magdalene, The loveliest of ladies! Your savior is not bound by death-- For Christ has conquered Hades!
~The Magdalene
Finished this guy yesterday and gave him to my friend last night and I had decorated her card with the stamp so when she saw it she said “Oh!!! Cute!!!” and I said “well that’s the present” and she LOVES it😁😁
