got kind of annoyed by not knowing how many of each there could be inside a box. like sure, it's assorted, but could be nice to have some sort of range right? like each could be between 12 and 13 perhaps? maybe between 11 and 14?
so decided to count ig, will leave the results of counting one box here.
I don't have a scale, so no idea how many they consider to be in each smarties box to reach the 10g per box thing.
after counting the boxes, the total matches, but i wonder if it is truly random. having both kitkats and coffee crips exactly at 10 feels a bit odd but with such a small sample of only 1 box to analyze I can't really claim anything. anything could be a statistical anomaly, who knows.
At this point, i could be done, but there's another random element here. how many smarties come in each box? and what colors they could have? i was tempted to open all of them to sort everything at once (and then eat them all at once), but i resisted the urge and decided to take a more calm aproach. below you will find the data colected from opening 17 boxes of smarties from the same chocolate box over a couple months.
The total per smartie box varied between 9 and 11, with the majority being 9 units, which makes me believe that's the target the company has and the 10s and 11s are outliers. 17 boxes summed 164 chocolates, averaging 9.62 units per box.

ah I gotta say some of the smarties were deformed or fractions of a smartie that i think broke in factory leading to only one part entering a box. the ones that were around 75% and above of a regular smartie i counted as 1, the ones that were too far from that i counted as 0.5 smartie. I did not expect that to be a huge deal so i didn't track that as much in the beginning.
and there you have it! if nothing, here lies a pointless exercise of free will. I'm not going to write down conclusions, you're smart, you can make your own.
