Trevor Noah interviewing Judith “Badass” Heumann
x
I’m glad so many people have discovered Judith “Judy” Heumann through this silly little gif set. I am sorry to say she has died at the age of 75. She was known as the mother of disability rights. In 1970 she sued the Board of Education to become a licensed teacher and she won. In 1977 she was one of the organizers of the 504 Sit-in, a 24 day protest for disability rights. You can learn more about her story from her book Being Heumann, the picture book Fighting for YES! or the documentary Crip Camp.
Judy Heumann believed in the inherent value of each disabled individual and would never back down on what she thought was right. Her friends and fellow activists remember her as a strong leader.
Judy Heumann
December 18, 1947 - March 4, 2023
May her memory be for a blessing.
no i dont want to ‘ask chatgpt’ i want to go to a wikipedia page and spend half an hour reading an article like a real person
"it would be so good if it was good" will haunt you but "it's extremely good, except for the one or two parts which are so bad it's genuinely kind of insulting" will straight up drive you insane
one has you making posts like "okay but if the author UNDERSTOOD the POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS of the story they were telling, and leaned into it, it would actually be a really interesting exploration of..."
the other has you pacing your bedroom at one in the morning going "why. why would you ever in a million years do it like that. genuinely what possible thought process was involved. was the writer possessed by a fucking ghost or something."
The legacy of France can and should only be remembered as one utterly stained by (or, more accurately, formed from) its brutal colonialist and imperialist endeavours.
@sissa-arrows source (french)
French police killed at least 100 people in 1961, throwing some of them into the River Seine to drown them.
this part is especially triggering for me, since i learnt this past 17th October, that my Grandmother, who was 15 years old at the time, arrived with her mother at this horrific scene a bit too late and was nearly arrested by the police. I can't imagine what would have happened to her if they had left the house earlier.
The rare white people who witnessed this on the right side of history said that one of the things they won’t forget is how they fellow white parisians turned into informants for the police and how during all of the night they called the cops on the Algerians who managed to hide or escape.
Over 200 Algerians were killed that night over 500 if you count the one killed in the following nights but thousands more were arrested (over 10000) every single ministry was an accomplice they used to public buses to transport them kept them in a stadium because the precincts were not big enough… While the people killed were men and women, the people arrested were a huge majority of men. So the following days the women and children started calling for a peaceful march to ask for their husbands and fathers to be released. This time they knew that the public opinion wouldn’t look kindly to it if they killed them. So the police instead arrested the women and sent them to a psychiatric hospitals saying they were unstable and needed to be locked inside. Luckily the director was a good man so he refused to lock the women inside the hospital saying they were perfectly sane but he also refused to let the police take them. So he waited until the police left to help the women leave back to their places.
There’s a documentary about it (I don’t remember if the psychiatric hospital was in this documentary or in an other) made by an Algerian woman in the diaspora in France. It’s filled with testimonies and a woman explains that when her husband left for the protest he told her to take care of the children and that if something happened to him she needed to make sure their children would go to school school and be good students. He survived to October 17 but was found and killed by the police on the 19th.
Lastly in 2021 Macron pretended to atone for what happened and with the police prefect they went to pay their respect on the bridge where most of the massacre happened and they went to put flowers. He was the first president doing it. Except after doing it in front of the camera the police then stopped the peaceful march that the survivors and the families of the victims organize every year and they kept them from putting flowers there and pay their respect. Macron did a lot of fucked up shit but pretending to acknowledge a massacre from the police while using the police to stop Algerians from paying their respects to the victims was really the thing that stayed in my mind the most. Nothing says “we actually don’t regret sending the police against a peaceful protest of Algerians and will do it again” as well as sending the police against the peaceful march organized by the descendants of those killed and by the survivors…

thanks for the comments and asks saying i'm being mean for very mildly saying i don't like when people make social decisions based on horoscopes.
your behavior has made me realize i should be "meaner": horoscopes are fake.
the position of planets and balls of gas did not in any way impact your personality or destiny. it has nothing to do with what kind of people you are compatible with, despite what an app or magazine told you.
i think sincere belief in horoscopes shows a concerning propensity to trust pseudoscience and a susceptibility to confirmation bias.
i'm pretty tired of having to tiptoe around this kind of thing and include disclaimers. if you genuinely think you shouldn't be friends with someone because of the date they came out of a uterus, you're being a clown.
"people only criticize horoscopes because women like it" is an embarrassing argument i, as a woman, am violently sick of seeing.
imagine living through a war. a pretty long war, lets say one of the longest conventional wars of the 20th century. for 8 years. maybe the first 8 years of your life. maybe your early adolescence, or late teens or young adulthood. you get the picture. now imagine the war ends, ok great, cool, life goes on i guess? economy sucks, post-war reconstruction, etc. and hey remember that country that funded and armed your country’s adversary during the war? yeah, that one. they noticed how your economy isnt doing so hot and decided to help you out with some sanctions. pretty cool, right? i guess it beats bombs. nothing like good old long slow economic warfare. at least its not the bombs. maybe you go to university, get a job. depending on how wealthy you are maybe some people you know leave. depending on how wealthy (and lucky) they are maybe they go to germany or the UK or the US, more likely turkiye or the philippines, maybe a gulf country. probably at least one. more likely you and your friends and loved ones are too poor or cant get a visa or both. but hey at least that war stuff is- hm? oh, yeah that country from before, they just invaded your neighbor. maybe you meet someone, hit it off. hang on, sorry, they just invaded your other neighbor. yes the same one they funded and armed. and hey why is everyone leaving. maybe you get married to that person from earlier. and maybe israel just invaded lebanon again. what? oh yeah
ok but none of those countries are here. and the war is over. sure, they keep saying theyre gonna invade you any day now. but theyve been saying that since the war ended! and it hasnt happened yet… and hey why is everyone so jaded. you cant trust anyone around here anymore. maybe something else will happen. you have kids (in this economy?) oh hey remember your other neighbor? no no, not an invasion, just a civil war. make that tw- three. yeah, i get it i see the pattern too, but thats different. you already had your war. thats in the past. plus you have bills to pay and mouths to feed. by the way theres a gaza war. no not that one. no not that one. no not that one.
no not that one.
getting warmer
no, look, its shouldnt have called it a war its actually a genocide.
people like you, kids like yours. you remember those missiles dont you? your kids dont. but they could. and wouldnt that be awful. you had almost forgotten the smell. you had almost let your guard down, sure not fully down, but the body adapts right? an object in motion stays in motion? but wouldnt it be awful if it happened here again. just awful.
Give me less "being kind requires zero effort" and more "being kind is worth the effort it takes."

People are unfazed if you hate women but if you dislike dogs they assume you're a bad person
Tumblr users will read a post complaining about normalized misogyny and hyperfocus on your claim that it's ok to dislike dogs
