One thing that drives me nuts is when stories draw a sharp divide between âour naĂŻve heroes who would never do a political schemeâ and âconsummate political schemers who are always antagonisticâ
Especially when the logistics of the universe would indicate that the heroes should be smart and savvy enough to both play political games and recognize when theyâre necessary.
Like actually. I donât admire when a story seems to say âThe only way to be good is to be naĂŻve, and only evil things that can be accomplished by smart subtle means.â
A single naĂŻve hero is fun and interesting. A universe that says thatâs the only way someone can be heroic is boring, flat, fundamentally broken, and dismissive of the real work that goes into incremental good.

So I've seen the post going around that's kind of like "kids should be able to read whatever they want and not have their choices censored by adults" and I largely agree with one caveat which is that children need to be able to opt in. I remember being 12 and sneaking some dirty books, and being interested and excited to read a book with something more sexy in it, and no one died, and everything was fine, and I was not forever scarred. However I do remember being shown a a horror film at seven by a babysitter and not being able to sleep for three weeks, and if I'd known how scary the movie was I wouldn't have wanted to watch it.
Kids can usually know what they can handle. Kids cover their eyes at scary points in films, kids read past stuff they aren't ready for. But it is good to be clear like "Oh that book might have some scary parts you might not like, are you sure you want to get that one?" Or "Oh this book has some grown up things in them that you might have a hard time understanding, I want to check that your okay with that." Like give kids the warnings and options and they will probably make a safe and informed decision. It doesn't have to be either or.
I also think kids should be allowed to be wrong about what they can handle without getting in trouble for it. They should be able to go to the adults in their life and ask for help processing what they saw or read without fear of judgement or punishment.
It's also worth mentioning that a book is quite different as a medium from a movie or a television show, especially one that you're watching with another person (which might be harder to pause or make you feel like you're not "allowed" to call for a break).
Yes, you can cover your eyes for a movie, but books require more active participation from you, and it's much easier to stop and reassess whether you want to keep going, or choose to skim an upsetting scene (which I do frequently even now).
That isn't to say that books can't be traumatizing, or that kids can't handle films/shows outside their age bracket, but I'd say it's much more important to be cautious going into a shared watching experience with a kid than to monitor what they're picking up for their bookshelf.
As always, picking what prompts to include was really hard thanks to you guys' wonderful brains, but we hope this list will excite many of you! Additional info + plain text versions of the prompts can be found under the cut. Please check the FAQ below before sending asks.
FAQ and Rules
What sort of content can I create for this event?
You can create whatever you want (fic, art, edits, etc). Any fandom is allowed, as well as OC stuff. NSFW is allowed, but please tag your content accordingly! The only thing not allowed is AI-generated content. You're also free to combine these prompts with the prompts of any other event.
Do I need to make 31 things to participate?
Oh heavens no! You can make as much or as little content as you like, skip days when desired, or combine prompts (so for example, write something that covers a prompt from day 1, 2, AND 3). You don't have to do the days in order either, go wild! To be considered a 'completionist', you only have to make sure that at the end of the month, you've covered 31 prompts from 31 different days, but whether you do that in 31 works or just 1 is up to you. Your works can be separate oneshots or one continuous fic, or something in-between.
How do I interpret these prompts?
Creativity is the name of the game here! If you don't understand a prompt, feel free to send us an ask about it. However, the important thing is you can interpret the prompts however you want. For example, 'heat' could be literal (fever, heatstroke, burn wounds) or figurative (somebody getting heat for something). The dialogue prompts are allowed to be slightly rewritten to fit better for the character whose mouth it's coming out of, be that the whumpee, whumpter, or caretaker. As long as you're having fun!
What are these alts about?
If none of the three prompts of a particular day are your cup of tea, you can swap them out for an alt prompt of your choice. This will count as having covered that day for completionists.
How do I tag my works and is there an AO3 collection?
It suffices to tag your work with #ailesswhumptober for us to see and reblog it! Please also tag nsfw content, since we'll be using that tag on this blog too. Tagging the day is optional but does help the mods along.
There will be an AO3 collection like every year. It will be linked here once created (closer to October).
What's this I hear about badges/achievements?
For those who want an extra challenge, we come up with a set of achievements each year in addition to the 'completionist' one for you to strive for. Each achievement you complete comes with a cool little badge, hand drawn by our very own Mod Radio, which you can claim at the end of the event. A full list of the achievements will be linked here once created (closer to October).
That should be all. If you have any additional questions, check our pinned or hit us up in the ask box. Or join our discord maybe, whumping can be a great group activity!

i do in hindsight really love the concept of complaining about adaptational changes in a 3000 year old oral tradition of which there isnât really a definitive version so much as a surviving one that is also the most adapted story of all time. my chud forebears in Roman Britain throwing rocks at a bard going nah nah nah the last one said some different other shit at that part you gotta do it again is a comforting image to me
jin ling, like any other kid, probably loved to be thrown around, picked up and to hang upside down from various places. it's why i like to imagine that the only time jiang cheng considered maybe kicking out someone from yunmeng jiang was when he walked out of his office one day to see like four or five of his disciples standing on their swords above the lake and just throwing jin ling between them, as if he was a ball and not a young child. the only reason he didn't do it was because obviously jin ling was having the time of his life if the way he was laughing was anything to go by, but jiang cheng definitely lost a few years of his life from the initial scare
#jiang cheng BOTH helicopter parent terrified when jin ling falls in the lake#AND the kind of guy who casually throws his two year old nephew at his 2IC#because that's just what you do with kids. to cheer them up.#and everyone rolls with it!#like. again. idk vibing here#but Jiang Cheng holding some important meeting with subordinates who are stuck watching their kids#kids in a bad mood! fractious! disrupting the meeting!#and very solemn serious young sect leader goes âokay send them outside. make them go play well known child's game Corpses In the Lakeâ#everyone else: uh What Now#(ok ok that game. after the massacre. probably not so popular.)#Jiang Cheng desperately trying to distract the kids: okay the first one of you to...steal a chicken? gets. five bucks. readysetgo#the adults in the room: again What.#jiang cheng: You Know. Hua Cheng : I have all those cute symbolic things that remind me of His Highness like the pearl, the umbrella or the tattoo on my arm đ
Xie Lian : So, I have this silk my parents used to hang themselves, this sword people stabbed me with a hundred times and two cursed shackles to remind me of that one time I attempted mass murder

Okay. I was on my beloved AO3 and I saw something that made me do a double take. So, now I really want to knowâŠ
What is your AO3 user ID?
Iâm an OG user 5 digits or less
Six figures baby!
Iâm in the millionsâŠ
Voting ended onJul 27
Iâm so curious to see how long people have been on AO3! I know some people have been on there since beta/invite only, but I would love to see what the number is on tumblr!
Look i am not the target audience of the "i'll choose this one person over the world" archetype anyway. I have a mom so it's not that novel for me. But i do think the choice is fundamentally uninteresting if the person in question doesn't actually take interest in the world??
"Oooh i'll burn down the world for you." Do you even like the world tho? Do you love strangers and plants and animals and civilization? If not then how can you say that?Go take some interest in the world around you first before your declaration can actually mean something.
hey it's me, a random guy on the internet, Okay listen (or don't, but this is some info for the writers in the ISAT fandom who want to hear a nitpick I hold in my crafter heart)
Siffrin does not carve with his knife.
This one, This knife right here ^^^ the blade is made for slashing outward (the curve increases dynamics and contact during a slice) or inward (inner sharpened curves are used in agricultural purposes with further evolution into weapons) it is weaponry, they should not be carving with it!
if you want canon reference as to why he doesn't carve, he literally states they lost their carving tools before the loops!
If you want to carve something out of wood, you need to have tools much thinner and more precise, not to mention Sharp to make something as simple as a spoon <- in this video alone, there's: spoke shave, draw knife, hook knife, and sloyd knife
(you can substitute gouges to that list as an alternative for the hook knife & add files if you don't use spoke shaves for a clean finish, some sandpaper goes alongside woodworking always)
Now I'll acknowledge that the person in the vid I linked is specialized in carving spoons & axe handles and has the tools for that, so if you're doing more Whittling, then "carving knives" are literally named for their use and they look like this:
small blade, big handle, also known more specifically as a chip carving knife, it's the most common used for small projects that don't use a vice (in the vid the vice is a special kind called a shave horse, used for objects that need adjusting while working yada yada dw about it)
but I wanted to make A singular post addressing this inaccuracy I see so often in fics and art when they mention carving, and I hope someone sees this as an invitation to do more research
just give him a different knife for carving post canon please

Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.
Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.
All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.
After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.
It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of yearsâfar longer than settlers have been in Canadaâand made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotÄn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.
And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racismâlike Kashechewanâbecause it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.
The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.
Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.
ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.
Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.
*Before sending money, verify that the appeal appears on an official First Nation, Tribal Council or registered charity channel.
If you can't offer financial support, please consider donating items of need. Moontime Connections is currently accepting drop-off donations. If you live in the Thunder Bay area, Namaygoosisagagun Health Office is also taking in donations! They can also bemailed to Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre at 555 West Arthur Street, Thunder Bay, ON, P7E 5P8.
