Right then!

A continuation of the “Siffrin does not use their knife to carve” post:

First section issss

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)! Look I get that we’re in Fantasy France, but Siffrin should at the very least have some leather cut-resistant finger cots (no their thin “weirdly short” gloves don’t count, they hardly look protective)

Carving often requires the usage of fingers on the spines of the blade, or you may cut towards your fingers and not want to risk it;

nowadays folks use cut-resistant tape on their pointer and thumbs, but this kind of simple leather cover is also used in sewing as a predecessor to the thimble! so I think they’d get their hands on them easy enough

I also will say eyewear is something people Should use,,, but don’ttt cause it’s annoying to put on, However! Since Odile has glasses we can presume that glassworking exists in ISAT and I’d dare say you could give him some more modern stuff with metal mesh side shields!

as a bonus general safety rule which I have seen in fic before! “The Blood Circle” is a perimeter (about an arm’s reach away) where people should avoid you if you are holding a dangerous tool, very basic stuff

Okay back to tools!

It’s good to have some kind of rasp or saw (these can be two handed or one handed) there’s the basic knife, gouges, and chisels are what I consider the basics (maybe add in some shark skin sandpaper for fun!)

I’ve seen folks carve tool handles, spoons, sheathes, sticks, offcuts from firewood, and even greenwood (wood that isn’t dried out and still fresh from the tree)

one of the main ways to harvest this wood is using a hatchet or axe, if you want to get into the specifics of it, then a thinner than average bevel is used for work on making blanks for carving larger things, plus it chops cross grain better if you don’t have a saw; it is funny to think of sif with an axe, but I think they’d be more of a stick kinda guy y’know

tangent:

I personally think a traveling carver should know about what wood species are safe to be drank out of and contact foods with, Cause there are some that can cause wood allergies and/or are genuinely toxic to contact

and finally,, this is just some carving practice sketches, don’t take them too seriously, I suggest finding your own reference to figure out What they’re doing with each pass of the blade

They need to retire and be loved by things other than people, and sleep cared for by ones who dont need anything from them
