As a Greek, in response to the current controversy about Matt Damon being cast as Odysseus, I'd just like to share that one of the moments that changed my brain chemistry as a kid was reading a novelized version of the Odyssey and coming across the following description of Odysseus when Circe sees him for the first time and thinks he's hot: "his hair curled like a clematis and his eyes were very brown".
So may I present my own casting choice for Odysseus:
Excuse me???
you are right and you should say it.
Is this the face of a man who would put his own infant in front of a plow to avoid going to war?
Absolutely not
You know who would try that shit?
Is this the face of a man who would defy the very gods to get home to his wife?
You know who would defy the gods just to show he could get away with it?
The last thing Penelope's suitors ever see:
garak finally finds Earth music he absolutely adores and julian’s like oh boy! that’s wonderful garak!! and garak’s like it’s sublime. deeply moving. almost divine. julian’s like, oh this is very exciting, what was it finally? brahms? abba? smashmouth? and garak’s like “spring peeper”. and julians like garak those are frog sounds. and garaks like well obviously, theres no way it would be human. human music is terrible. these guys are great tho
“what, might I ask, are they singing about? the universal translator doesn’t appear to register it.”
“garak, that’s just the sound they make to find a mate.”
“oh. so it is a lonely song.”
Julian: They’re saying, “Come to my shop sometime if you’re looking for conversation.”
Garak: oh well obviously those frogs are lonely and horny and also very high. how embarrassing for them
"They were a good person with good intentions and strong convictions and belief in doing the right thing. And because of that they deeply hurt people including people they were trying to protect" - is fantastic characterisation that too many people reduce to only one half of the equation
"They were a good person and people still died because they didn't put trust in anyone else" ← is so fucking good but people don't fucking appreciate it
"They were a good person and they failed. Over and over again. They failed." ← DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND HOW DELICIOUS THAT IS!?!?
I am on my hands and knees begging people to allow characters to be complex and flawed and not reduced down to "The Good Guy" and "The Bad Guy"
well, if this isn't the place for a Deep Space Nine plug, I don't know what is.... --The former freedom fighter who calls herself a terrorist and spends 7 years learning to start healing --The man who has to choose between committing murder and seeing millions die --The other man in that exact same situation --The dude who's whole existence is literally illegal, who starts as an idealist and ends as something else entirely --The guy who starts the show as a proud fascist and ends it a good man --The narcissist genocidal fascist convinced he's on the side of angels and counts, among his good deeds, not murdering his own child in cold blood like, that's just a tiny sample off the top of my head of the kinds of complex, flawed characters DS9 has
i will never be over the fact that during first contact a human offered their hand to a vulcan and the vulcan was just like “wow humans are fucking wild” and took it
Humanity’s first contact with Vulcans was some guy going “I’m down to fuck.”
Vulcans’ first contact with Humans was an emphatic “Sure.”
@sineala
#iiiiiiiiiiiiii mean vulcans had been watching humans for a long time#they knew the significance of a handshake but still#they had to find some fast and loose ambassador#willing to fuckin make out with a human for the sake of not offending them on first contact#lmao#star trek give me the story of this fast and loose vulcan
“sir…these…these humans…they greet each other by…” *glances around before furtively whispering* “by clasping hands…”
*prolonged silence* “oh my…”
“sir…sir how will we make first contact with them? surely we…we cannot refuse this handclasping ritual, they will take it as an insult, but what vulcan would agree to such a distasteful and uncomfortable ritual??”
*several pensive moments later* “contact the vulcan high command and tell them to send us kuvak. i once saw that crazy son of a bitch arm wrestle a klingon, he’ll put his hands on anything”
Elsewhere, w/ kuvak: “….my day has come.”
The vulcan who made first contact with humans is named Solkar guys. Y’all just be makin’ up names for characters that already have names.
Bonus: here’s a screencap of Solkar doing the “my body is ready” pose right before he shakes Zefram Cochrane’s hand:
I swear Vulcans only come in two types and they are “distant xenophobes” or “horny on main for humanity”. Also apparently this guy is Spock’s great-grandfather and frankly that explains everything.
Hey so I looked into this at one point and that handshake literally created a lifelong telepathic bond between the two of them, and basically all of Solkar’s descendants were later obsessed with humans, including freaking SPOCK, so I’m not saying that handshake was so gay and good that it created an intergenerational telepathic bond between Solkar’s descendants and humans, but I’m also not….not….saying that.
actual footage of first contact makeouts
The slow deliberation with which Solkar takes Cockrane’s–I’m sorry, Cochrane’s–hand… The sheer sensuality witch which Solkar infuses an otherwise borderline impersonal social ritual… It clearly shows a very conscious knowledge, on Solkar’s part, of what the significance of the handshake is in Vulcan terms and of how affected he is by it.
That’s why he’s so slow in doing it, and so sensual. A part of Solkar can’t believe this is happening, despite it being a perfectly logical thing to expect from a human, and the rest of him can’t believe how good it is.
I bet that if the camera zoomed in any further we would see the dilation of Solkar’s pupils and a quickly-repressed shiver of delight. Cochrane’s firm, businesslike clasp is probably (in sexual terms) being perceived as a deliciously carnal display of dominance.
No wonder Solkar is all like, “TAKE ME, YOU WILD-MANNERED BARBARIAN WITH ENTICINGLY ROUGH CALLUSES.”
And so we find out that yes, there is such a thing as bottoming in Pon-farr.
Every time this post comes round my dash, it just gets better.
#somehow the idea of vulcans being Horny On Main always gives me the giggles#like literally all they had to do#was be like actually#hand contact is very intimate for our species#and im p sure humanity as a whole would not find that insurmountably weird#there are human cultures that dont shake hands#vulcans are logical enough to think that through on their own#so clearly that vulcan was just down to fuck#down to fuck in a public#professional diplomatic situation no less#and he did not fucking care who knew it (via kittykatthetacodemon)
Some Vulcan: we could probably just explain that handshakes are intimate in our culture
Solkar, rubbing lip gloss on his hand: don’t tell me how to do my job
This is my favourite Star Trek post, complete with headcanons, corrections, the truth coming out of her well to shame Spock even. Seriously perfect fandom work.
They could have explained none of it and responded to the offered hand with a polite bow. First contact was gonna be with the guy who proved they were technologically ready for it but any human aware of Japan and China would recognise that

Re-watching Stargate from the beginning. And one thing I am struck by, is how beautiful O'Neill's masculinity is displayed.
There's no denying that he is a masculine person. The ultimate ideal of what a man is. He's played by Richard Dean Anderson, the man semi-responsible for the term "MacGuyver" being part of our everyday lexicon.
But as a man, he doesn't fit the modern ideal of masculinity. He doesn't have a six pack. He's of average height. He's in his 40s, with greying hair and wrinkles. You don't get to be a Colonel in the Air Force and stay a fresh faced 20-something. Overall, he just looks like some guy you'd see down the pub. Not making a podcast on how men need to be dominant.
On the surface O'Neill appears to be emotionally unavailable who uses his humour as a defence mechanism. This is partly true, but it's not the whole story. His humour is a defence mechanism to stop himself from being overwhelmed by everything that has happened to him as a career soldier.
When it comes to those under his command, he's compassionate. He asks for advice and ideas from his team before offering anything of his own. He LISTENS and pays attention!! He's willing to offer hugs when needed. He's good with kids, giving an adorable shiba Inu to a girl in mourning to provide her with emotional support and joy. His advice is often to try to be friendly and smile. He never tells anyone to suck it up and get over it, and if he does tell someone to put their feelings aside it's so they can focus on saving lives.
He sends Daniel a tissue box as a message that he needs contact, rather than an intrusive probe.
Episode SIX we also see him (well, a crystal that had taken over his form) sitting in a ball, clutching the pillow of his dead son, crying his eyes out. You would NEVER see that in a modern day drama that early on.
This was made in 1997, and yet I am left with the intense feeling that we need to have more characters like Jack O'Neill around today. We need more men who want to emulate his version of masculinity. The kind who attends his doctors appointments, listens to what she has to say, and will follow her orders as a medical professional.
We need more men whose character is partly defined by his complete lack of knowledge. He regularly says "I don't know about this so I'm going to ask Captain Samantha Carter about it."
God I love this man.
They're growing SO fast but are still SO small....
Princess Roly Poly beside one of Earl's primaries
Kira starts DS9 firmly believing that you have to kill a bunch of civilians break a few eggs to get the job done, that the only good Cardassian is a dead Cardassian, that ever last member of a species should be held responsible for the sins of their leaders. By the end, she has fought for Cardassian freedom and convinced Garak that the death of the Founder leader, who has killed so many, won't actually make anything better. It took her years, but she finally found peace. May we all be so lucky.

The first time Julian tried to smile at Garak and the last time he tried to smile at Garak. Guess I just wanted to make myself sad today lol
Worf will Not be hearing any slander against the Enterprise. (Even if it is kinda true that Quark's Bar and Grill has a better holosuite safety record than the flagship of the Federation.)
@imadoctornotanescalator Worf’s expression is giving “So you’ve chosen death.”
"The magic system is never fully explained" yeah that's how life works. Imagine having a story set in modern day America and the characters have several pages of exposition on combustion engines and telecommunication networks before we get to the plot
i think this is absolutely correct and good writing advice but also victor hugo would like to have a word with you about the parisian sewer system circa 1832
victor hugo would like to have many words with you about the parisian sewer system circa 1831
I know the genetic engineering stuff with Julian wasn’t planned, but in Paradise Lost/Homefront they go out of their way to have him express that he doesn’t have family he wants to contact on Earth and it just makes me wonder what they WERE thinking about his background.
Definitely less glaring/more coincidental but still interesting things in hindsight is in Armageddon Game they make it a point to show that no one really has info on Julian’s parents/family, and the fact that in the early seasons he goes out of his way to have people call him Julian instead of by his rank or Bashir. It’s compelling that the name especially ties together, that he’s insistent on using the name he chose for himself rather than the one that connects him to his parents, and hesitant to use the rank that he feels he didn’t earn
Damn, I never even noticed his aversion to being called Bashir. The daddy issues, they run DEEP.

I'll just leave this quote from "A Stitch In Time" here for you.
you will never catch me complaining about an actress on a tv show having an imperfectly concealed pregnancy or a character going on a sudden trip somewhere while her actress is on maternity leave. so many actresses (and women working in any other field) are fired, punished and pressured into making reproductive decisions for their employers' convenience & if i have to try a bit harder to suspend my disbelief then that's absolutely what i'm going to do if it means people are getting to exercise reproductive & bodily autonomy without punishment
My favorite writing of this was how Star Trek DS9 handled Nana Visitor's pregnancy. It felt out of character for her character (Kira Nerys) to get pregnant and it's the semi-utopian future, so presumably birth control works quite well and abortions are easily available. Solution: another female character gets pregnant, is injured in an emergency situation, and Kira agrees to act as surrogate. They effectively wrote this entire story line well enough, with implications for the dynamics between Kira and the biological parents, that I didn't realize until later that the actress was actually pregnant. I thought it was just an interesting plot line.
@katherinetheok
fuck yes. they handled this so well and also gave us a cheeky nod to the IRL sitch by having Kira tell Julian her pregnancy was all his fault. A++ handling, no notes (the less said about Sid not getting paternity leave the better)
