âA kiss may be grand, but it wonât pay the rental, on your humble flat, or help you at the automat.â
Like literally the most famous song about how much girls love jewellry is just explaining the importance of getting jewellry for when your partner leaves you penniless and alone.
The founder of Girl Scouting in the US, Juliette Gordon Low, funded her first troop by selling her pearl necklace, which was her only belonging after her husband died and left everything to his mistress.
She founded Girl Scouts to teach girls self-sufficiency so they wouldnât have to go through what she went through when her husband died and she didnât know how to take care of herself.
While weâre on the subject, letâs please also remember that historically disenfranchised communities who had to worry about frequently being run out of town often bought expensive jewelry with their limited funds not because they were greedy or tacky or classless, but rather because you canât sew a real estate investment into the lining of your coat, and the powers that be canât freeze a diamond necklace the way that they can freeze a bank account.
Holy **** oh right okay. So I was about to make a post about how using speech to text has already been a game changer for me but as you can see by the line of asterix at the start of this post the bloody thing auto censors swear words. (Yet bloody got through, ig Because it is a description and also British slang.). Hint: the word I was trying to say there starts with F and ends with K.
Oh and guess what else you can't say you can't say? **** [Nipples]. had to type that myself. penis is ok but **** [clitoris] isn't, and all my attempts to say "clit" were Misunderstood, which may just be my speech but at this point I am not willing to give the benefit of the doubt. Vagina is OK too but every time I say it there is a moment when an * shows up on screen first before the full word does. this doesn't happen when I say the word penis.
It is completely heinous. Anybody who needs speech to text is immediately forced to comply with the rules set out by people in a position of power and then enforced by a machine â a machine that is a very powerful accessibility tool. Imagine trying to dictate a letter to a doctor or fill in an E consult with speech to text, only to have words of your anatomy censored as if they are taboo. there is already far too much stigma around genital physical health â and note that I could say genital but can't say **** [clitoris] â for it to be okay for these words to be censored.
And even if somebody just wants to swear In a message to their friends or write smut/**** [pornography], they should be able to. There is no justification for this feature. No reason for it to be default.
I'm trying to find a way around this. There is a settings icon on the little speech to text bar that comes up, but this only gives me options For the speech typing launcher, auto punctuation, and to set the default microphone. it's making me extremely angry
i havenât stopped thinking about this tweet for days

take my ass to torture city where the grass is ouch and the girls are hit me
nope. funkytown again
Victor Frankenstein after achieving the impossible and building a fucking person from scraps of the dead: Oh god, ew, ew it's ugly! Yucky! Yucky! Gross! Ew! Ew! Yucky! Yucky! Gross! Ew!
Message to all Americans: you BETTER NOT have brought BURGER in your SUITCASE
#shout out to the time I was bleeding a lot in (Australian) customs#and a customs guy stared at my wound and I could just see the gears in his brain automatically going 'blood = biohazardous material'#but like what were they supposed to do#so he just stared at me until another customs agent was like 'that's their own blood they are allowed to have that'
DERIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN get back here and explain yourself
What's there to explain. It was my blood. I was allowed to have it.
#I was asked repeatedly if I had sausages because I was German#nobody asked about my blood :/
They have to get super specific because you would not believe the amount of people who think that their contraband doesn't count somehow. Oh, I don't have any fish, just this tinned tuna! It doesn't count if it's in a tin! These apricots are dried so they're not a fruit! It's not a dairy product, it's just cheese -- that doesn't really count because it's not liquid! No, I don't have anything made of wood. Oh, the wood carving in my bag? Nono, that's an antique. That means it's magically not wood somehow.
The customs people asking you repeatedly about sausages probably had friends with a story about some German guy who tried to bring in 30kg of cured sausage or something, insisting that the meat is cured so it doesn't count and he doesn't need to declare it.
When I went to Germany their biosecurity was nothing, and multiple people there couldn't comprehend that I wouldn't be allowed to take German sausage home with me. Several different people asked and assumed I was exaggerating when I explained that I couldn't do that without importing it through the proper channels or filling out a fuckton of paperwork. I think Europe as a whole has shitty biosecurity because their geography makes it difficult to enforce; when you have the natural advantage of being a single country completely surrounded by water with a very unique ecosystem, it's both a lot easier and a lot more important to guard your borders against new pathogens, parasites and invasive species.
i had to force the german customs agent to stamp my dog and cat's paperwork. they truly have terrible bio security
#if you drive into California from elsewhere they ask you about fruits#I have only the vaguest recollection of this (it was over a decade ago) and I've no idea why and maybe they don't do it anymore#and we didn't have any so I don't know what happens if you did
Most likely they asked because one state had a fruit fly or similar parasite that the other state did not have. And if you have fruit then they make you throw it out or eat it on the infected side of the border. Fruit barriers like this are pretty common; most places will have special fruit dumping bins for anyone who didn't know and showed up at the border (or at a public transport depot intending to cross the border) with fruit.
Are they like..... Yknow.... [Goes to do a hand gesture but forgets I'm a wizard and I accidentally cast Lv50 lightning bolt]
Also, please do not listen to how people talk about cover letters on this site. Cover letters are important, and in many industries you can be damn sure they'll be read. And no, they're not 'fanfic about working in your office', or just re-stating the resume contents in a fancier guise. If you treat them like that, then of course they're not doing much for you. That makes you sound like a syncophantic windbag, and it's not doing anything else to help.
I was trained in the dark arts of the cover letter by my mother, who is a hiring manager. And her training has paid off: I've been consistently told my cover letters are excellent. Let me pass on the wisdom.
The job of a cover letter is to give a prospective employer strictly more information than is on the resume. This is where you take the resume contents and put them into context. You look at the job requirements (you are looking at the job requirements before applying, right?) and look at your resume and ask the question (in your head) "why would a person think this candidate would be good for this job?" and your cover letter is the answer to that question. If you don't answer that question, the hiring manager is going to have to do it themselves, and you have way more information to work with than they do.
This is especially important if you're moving from one industry to another, because then the relevant connections aren't obvious. It's also very important if you're overqualified, because then you can use the letter to say "I know it looks like this job would be too entry-level for me, but I'm interested to pursue it for reasons x, y, and z". You can also use this space to explain away something that might otherwise be disqualifying, like job-hopping or a long break in employment. The tone to strike here is always matter-of-fact and constrained to topic - don't go into detail about health stuff or personal tragedy, just tell them what they need to hear: that this period of your resume was affected by [bad thing] but that it's now in the past and you're looking forward to the next chapter. Remember, one of the things they're trying to learn is whether you'd be content in this role, or whether you'd be miserable and leave after 2 months, which would force them to do all the work of hiring again. You're trying to establish that you will fit right in and not cause problems. Knowing what drew you to this job in particular (and don't just say 'money', that's true for everyone) helps with that.
And the other mistake? Everyone writes cover letters that are too long. One page is fine. Two is the absolute maximum, and that's if you have a lot of specific things to say. It's a waste of your time and theirs to pad it out with fluff. Of my two most recent successful cover letters (i.e. jobs for which I was interviewed) one was 390 words and the other was 550. That's the length of this post. How long did it take me to write this post? About 15 minutes to write, 5 to proof and edit. That's how long you should be spending on a cover letter, maximum.

Flags Mashup Bot is really out here trying to start World War III
UPDATES
My fav part is that it is genuinely just a bot. All it does is take two countries, puts the 2nd country's colours on the 1st country's flag and mixes their names together.
Literally the only other thing behind it is that the bot weights picking the second country based on how close they are to the first, and basic geography + history means that's also where you're going to get the most aggressive relations. This isn't some guy trolling by making things specifically to piss people off, it's some guy who likes flags going "wouldn't it be fun to mix flags together, let's write a bot for that" and accidentally creating a whole meme culture of "days since flag mashup bot last tried to start WW3 = 0" and the like.
"Isn't it weird that [thing humans commonly eat] is poisonous to literally every domesticated animal" I mean, there's a pretty good chance that [thing humans commonly eat] is at least mildly poisonous to humans, too. One of our quirks as a species is that we think our food is bland if it doesn't have enough poison in it.
Humans have a really weird mix of mundane superpowers.
We're not fast and don't have a lot of natural weaponry but we're bizarrely tolerant to a broad range of toxins to the point that one toxin is considered a morning necessity for some to perform at work. Gotta love us.
I find it incredibly funny from a meta/author perspective, that Ancient Greece decided to name their protagonist that angers many people âAnger Bringerâ but, even funnier, is the in universe understating that anyone who meets Odysseus must have had the thought âoh dear, how unfortunate to be named hateful/hatedâ and then they have exactly One conversation with him and go âAh I see nowâ
For reference, Odysseusâ name sounds very much like the Greek word odussomai, which can roughly mean âI am angry atâ or âI am the cause of angerâ (or simply âto hateâ or âto dismissâ), a fact that is used for ironic effect frequently in the Odyssey.
Itâs also specifically stated in Book 19 that Odysseusâ grandfather, a master thief and one who has also pissed off a lot of people, specifically named him this because âI am disliked by many, all across the world, and I dislike them back. So name the child Odysseus.â 19.428
Bro looked at his grandson and thought âAhaha, this oneâs going to be a troublemaker like me. Better get him started early.â
Itâs like a terrible allegory for cause and effect or something.

Did you hear the scientists have found a way to grow colored cotton? Thoughts?
Itâs not a âscientists have foundâ and much more âpeople have been already doing that for thousands of years and itâs just gaining more attention recentlyâ
Scientists didnât know. It should be âScientists just found outâ
Thereâs actually been a load of vitriol leveled against folks who try to raise traditional colored cottons, because a lot of cotton growers donât want the colored cottons cross-pollinating with their standard white cotton.
But anyway cotton can be grown in lovely natural shades of greens, reddish-brown ochres, and browns, all of which deepen with a good boil in water with a bit of washing soda thrown in.
The color obviously doesnât fade or run, because itâs not dye. Itâs the intrinsic color of the fiber itself.
I....I want clothes made out of those colors. They don't hurt my brain!
Arenât they lovely?
Iâm biased because I love the natural earth tones of many fibers, of course...browns, blacks, creams, copper-reds, ect...but I think theyâre just gorgeous.

If anyone wants to know where you can get yarn or cotton like this!
Scientists did not "just find out", and this is more of the same anti intellectual bs as the post that goes around claiming archaeologists were too stupid to know that hair could be sewn for elaborate styles.
Anyway, scientists DID figure out how to grow colored cotton. They genetically engineered it to be bright fuckin pink, and they didn't "just find out" about it, they already knew which is literally what inspired them to attempt the thing they just accomplished. Begging y'all to stop pretending that scientists don't know things, don't have interests, don't grow up in farming communities or have family who taught them this. Scientists are people. Do you seriously think people who use genetic engineering to make eco-friendly pink cotton don't know anything about textiles?
Anyway. Bright pink cotton without dyes, because science is awesome
Yes. CSIRO scientist Doctor Colleen MacMillan led the team that figured this out. They used tobacco plants for testing because of the genetic similarity. Basically if the tobacco leaves produced colors when injected with a bit of the experimental genetic material, the scientists on the team already understood that the color change would affect cotton bolls as well.
They grew bright red and bright yellow in a petri dish.
And yes, Doctor MacMillan knows lots of things. Here's a list of some of her publications.
@csirogram on Instagram
Additionally folks are researching how to create flame resistant cotton and black cotton. If a variety of black cotton becomes viable, it can stop a LOT of environmental damage caused by chemical manufacturing of black dye.
THIS. Every damn botanist I know, including myself, is at the least tangentially interested in fiber arts and indigenous methods behind things like that. Scientists have hobbies and we're all goddamn nerds so a lot of those hobbies are more niche. The anti-intellectualism is insane. I swear half of y'all think scientists are all evil cackling old men devoted to holding up colonial power systems. The work done by Dr. MacMillan is crazy cool and should be celebrated
I have misplaced an egg. I was going to fry an egg for breakfast, took the egg out of the fridge, got distracted, and now the egg has disappeared. I've looked everywhere but there's no trace of egg. where are you, egg? where egg?
