i'm getting the sense some of you are not actually forklift certified.
well damn . egg on my face
THE PLOT THICKENS @averagejoey2000 explain yourself
I can't believe this is how I'm finding out that I got a scam forklift cert.
I took the cargo ops class at school but my teacher explained that it doesn't give a certification and I'd only be okay for ship's crane and the school forklifts. she said I could take an online exam and get my cert. I paid 60 bucks.
I'm googling and I'm seeing a lot of resources saying that the online programs cover the classroom part of the exam but not the in person practical aspect.
29 CFR 1910.178 (l)(2)(ii)
but I did the in person practical shit at school.
the back of the card even had fancy numbers on it. I couldn't have known that this isn't the one. this website sounded more official than certifyme.net, and there wasn't one with a .gov address.
so, I emailed OSHA, and they said that so long as I live and work in California, there's no such thing as forklift certification. I have to be told how to do it every time I get the job.
Update: I took a certification class in shipboard Material Handling Equipment at my federal job. *now* I'm forklift certified, but only on ships and piers and only for this company, but also rated to forklift explosives and hazardous materials. Also I'm a woman now.
Cartoon on the female tight dress style of the late 1870s, which also satirizes male formal military uniforms. By George Du Maurier in Punch, May 25th 1878. A variation on the classic theme of a young lady dropping her handkerchief...
Caption: The New Hussar Hessians and Pants
Lady: See, I've dropped my handkerchief, Captain de Vere!
Gentleman: I know you have, Miss Constance. I'm very sorry. I can't stoop either!
me as a teenager: man it sucks to have no privacy or autonomy but i guess its for a good reason. when i turn 18 i will realise how young i was and understand why they did all that.
me as an adult: teenagers are an oppressed class, their abuse is normalised and systemic and they need to start killing people

I really can and will blame the 9-5 for everything. "We're in a loneliness epidemic" well, we have to spend a third of our day interacting with people in a professional way that makes forming real friendships difficult and then we're peopled out by the time we're done. "People are eating more and more unhealthily" people have to spend more than a third of their day doing work related tasks and they don't want to spend their tiny amount of free time making food. "People aren't involved in their local communities" after spending more than a third of their day doing work related things people are tired and also all those community events take place during normal working hours. "People need to get more hobbies" after spending more than a third of their day working, people are TIRED and don't want to do anything that takes yet more energy. "Literacy is dying" to maintain your critical thinking skills you need to read/watch things that make you think and after spending more than a third of your day doing work related stuff you are TIRED and don't want to expend even more brainnpower. "People need to get outside more" People. Are. TIRED. Because they have to spend all of their time working or preparing for work or recovering from work or doing all the chores they couldn't stay on top of because of work. I can blame fucking anything on having to work, it is truly the root of all fucking evil.
Hey OP, love your scalding take here; don't forget about commutes.
Once you factor in commute times (which even for short distances can be grotesquely inflated due to the fact that so many people are all commuting at the same time, but that's a different conversation) many people are actually devoting upwards of 10-12 hours a day on "work related tasks."
noticing a complete lack of national panic re: all these male teenagers getting on steroids in the last year. curious to know why it's such a problem when I inject hormones
#as someone who keeps an eye on this problem its literally insane. #kids are going on steroids and fucking it up so bad they develop fatal heart conditions #peptide companies are selling people any chemical claiming it can do any thing #people are overdosing on drugs that cook you from the inside that fell out of common use in the 80s or smth for being too dangerous #and healthy teens are getting access to glp1s without a prescription
the tiktok word for peptides is "peppers" if you wanna take a peek at the horrors
the mexican football team has a 17 yrs old player and one of the funniest outcomes of this is that he cannot appear in any ad for gambling or drinking so he only appears in candy and milk advertisements. his first world cup and he's not even legally allowed to drive. his nickname is "morita" (little berry). he's three apples tall.
they couldn't put him in the beer campaign so he was represented by a bunch of berries
[ID. A beer advertisement with a row of cans, each with the face of a player from Mexico's men's football team, except for the aforementioned morita. There is a small pile of berries beside the last of the beer cans, which has been highlighted with a red circle. End ID.]

just some late night academic navel-gazing
ideologies exist before we have official names for them
but the naming implies observation, and the construction of identity
so can we look at ideologies which existed before the construction of their political identity, and label them as being within that identity group?-or does the practice of naming and constructing an identity, inherently separate the individuals and groups which purported those ideas prior to the construction of the ideological grouping from those who purport said ideas after the creation of the construct?
this is specifically intellectual history and the history of ideas. and its Absolutely a line all of us struggle with when researching. while there isnt a Very Short Introduction to this specific topic, there IS a Very Short Introduction To American Intellectual History by OUP that would probably have some clear thoughts about the issue.
I am reccing that book over any other because a) you aint got time for further and b) you just need an overview.
in my own research i had to have a really clear working definition of my term, and looked for examples of it prior to its use. because mine was less about identity, although there was a person-focussed term as well, your specific concern was not mine. whether or not someone like Francesco Geminiani considered himself a virtuoso (or others thought him one) has little to do with whether or not he engaged with virtuosity (he did, in that he censured it; that is, a highly flashy audience-seeking performance practice).
but this shit i find So Hard to detail in my brain. its like catching the wind to understand the shape of the problem.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: A lot of "mental health issues" disappear when bills are paid, rent is secure, and the fridge is full. Peace is expensive. And pretending money doesn't affect mental health is privilege.
today i took the worst photo of a loon one can possibly take while remaining identifiably a loon
loon :)
i painted my loon :)
It’s not the biggest issue with AI but I also resent that it’s ruining Cute Animals On The Internet, a thing the internet has been fantastic at since basically its inception. I miss my ability to trust and fuck you for taking that from me.
Everyone: Pound cakes are very rich.
Me: Yeah I bet they're a bit more than a regular cake, probably basically the same thing though.
Pound cake recipe:
This isn't a cake this is a giant cube of cookie
#i fucking love pound cake i will go FERAL for pound cake i dont think this recipe has enough butter
This cake is approximately 50% sugars and fats how much more butter do you want
traditionally its a pound each of flour sugar eggs and butter.
The parade listed me as a 'pole dancer.'

Getting #BlackRock to change/exit the real estate market in NYC is a massive win for New Yorkers and #ZohranMamdani.
I don't understand how this is even a defence in the age of drone warfare.
Or even like... Cannon warfare.
Yeah, the Ottomans could have taken this in the fourteenth century.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
#ok but this wouldve popped off in the age of zombie doomsday prepping
ngl it would be a fantastic larp location.
#why do people think shipping containers are the cure to every issue????#unless youre filling them with sand theyre not bulletproof#and theres no fucken roof
Fill the shipping containers with concrete to make Giant Bricks
shipping containers are also not that strong and also only cheap/relatively accessible to use if you live somewhere where shipping containers just end up
Fun fact about shipping container houses is that because so many shipping containers are used to transport hazardous materials and are unsuitable to live in for contamination reasons, it's often easier to make them out of entirely new, unused shipping containers than to source appropriate second hand ones. Which destroys the entire purpose of shipping container houses. Because we already know how to make rooms that are cheaper, better insulated, and more spacious and easy to acquire and transport than brand new shipping containers.
I remember a guy on one job talking about having one for storage on his property from ages back and the council was on his ass to remove it, costing him thousands. When the craze hit he had people come out of the wood work offering *him* 1000’s of dollars to buy it off him. He sold it for like 5k and his buy paid for all transport. Near overnight inversion of value for the things. Literally the best covert marketing campaign of lying which preyed on apocalypse anxiety (i am including solarpunk-esque people in this alongside preppers). Concrete is either too woke or not progressive enough for the average joe.
so one of the interesting things about reading books you find on the side of the road, is that occasionally you find answers to questions you didnt know you were asking. That's how I read the 1959 post-apocalyptic novel Alas Babylon. And its... fine. Youre sympathetic to the MC, its quasi believable, the heroes win the day. The writing is fairly bland but effective. But its massive roiling fanbase and the sprawl of copycats are what give us this shitty prepper doomsday fantasy. i didnt even know there could BE such a clear single source.
compound? check

uber nationalistic? check
almost guaranteed to have WEIRD ASS sexual and gender politics? check
i dont ever need to reread Alas Babylon, but im glad that i did. seeing the source material after thousands of derivatives is rather clarifying.
