been reading cicero's rant about words being given obscene meanings and i don't think i've ever seen a latin sentence that made me burst into such immediate and violent laughter before
had a couple people be like "i have no idea what this means" so to clarify: the word penis in latin originally meant tail and only later got the sense of, uh. penis. so this is cicero complaining that nowadays all these hooligans are using the word "penis" for naughty purposes
Thank you for this post, I will be showing it to every boomer who ever complains about how the kids these days are butchering the language.
This comment was left on a post about making the most of the Libby app. "Excessive use of generous lending policies" is the most absurd phrase I've ever seen anyone use to discuss libraries.
evergreen
looked up Heidi because I'm a journalist
for reasons I can't imagine this publisher of sexless Alaska love stories is averaging under 20 likes each on posts about her books, so if I can be so honest I kind of have my doubts that her books are getting read even with the excessive use of generous lending policies
Also her claim that authors are not getting paid per borrow is.... wrong. With ebooks (which is what she's talking about here with Libby) there are two forms of licensing for libraries to lend out ebooks.
The first kind is that they buy a license for a pre-determined amount of check-outs. I'll just make some numbers up for the sake of illustrating what that looks like: Let's say $20 for 20 borrows. When the ebook has been checked out 20 times, the library has to renew the license and pay more money in order to continue lending out the ebook. The author gets a cut of that $20 as their royalties.
The second kind is literally paying per borrow. (Again just making up numbers here) Let's say the library pays 50 cents every time the book is checked out. The author still gets a cut as their royalties. Is it just 10 or 20 cents per borrow? Yes, but that adds up! AND it means that people who otherwise wouldn't have been able to read my book at all are able to read it, which is great! AND it means that the library is thriving and being used, which is also great!
So yes, authors DO get paid from library activity!!!!!!
Do not feel guilty for using the library. I don't know one single author (except this Little Miss Ma'am in the screenshots, apparently) who would resent their readers for using libraries.
Like a new friend!
the tiktokification of tumblr needs to be stopped
we donβt censor words here stop acting like a fool, when you censor words and tags people who have that word filtered due to triggers will still see it

My grandmaβs on and off again boyfriend that she cheated on grandpa with died today.
RIP to Nanaβs side piece. Though they never married, Grandpa died in September and she brought his long term competition to Thanksgiving that year.
Grandma and Grandpa had a shotgun wedding when Grandma was 19. Grandpa went off to Vietnam which left her, a severely mentally young mother, alone. Never heard a complaint about her side piece Jeff. He seemed to make her happy and for that I salute him.
Iβm an only child so I have to discuss sensitive family drama with my 38,000 followers instead.
My grandmother broke up w my grandfather through a letter and he just pretended to have never read it. They got married and had three kids.
My grandmother confessed on her death bed that:
Her and Grandpa were in a relationship with their best friends
The four of them have been in a relationship since they were teenagers
They flipped a bottle cap to see which girl the boys would marry
Their children could have either man as their biological father but their biological mother is the mum that raised them
The past two weeks has been chaos since her confession π
The problem w writing fiction is that you'll be like tee-hee I'm going to write a story about a fucked up little scenario that's got nothing to do with anything in real life, just some pure messed up nonsense, and then you finish it and take a step back and go aw rats I made a metaphor again
I already made that post a while back but it bears repeating: you need to rid yourself of the idea that fandom is some kind of natural phenomenon you have no power over. Fics don't sprout out of existence the same way rain starts falling. Ships don't become popular the same way hurricanes grow. It's people who make art of your blorbos, it's people who get into shipping and headcanons and such.
Which means that you, personally, have the power to influence how shit go in your fandom. I often see people complaining about how "urgh why is this ship unpopular" or "why isn't there more content about xyz" and such, and while I certainly understand the sentiment you have to realize that you can change that. You can make art yourself. You can commission someone to make art for you. You can post headcanons or concepts or ideas online, even if they're not prettily worded or only half-finished. You can encourage people who do create the shit you wanna see by sending them nice asks, or reblogging their stuff, or commenting on their fics.
Trying to shame or guilt people into not making what they like in favor of doing what you like is a doomed endeavor (as well as a dick move.) However, being loud and passionate about the shit you do like can go a long way- I say this as someone who got multiple people to ship characters who have never interacted in canon. You can do it! It costs nothing to try! I believe in you! :)
bike can refer to a bicycle or a motorcycle but cycling only refers to riding a bicycle. hog can refer to a motorcycle or a cock but not a bicycle.
i love when someone remembers the smallest thing i told them, it's one of the gentlest ways someone can make you feel important

I maintain that the best summation of my feminist beliefs are that men and women are not fundamentally different. There are a few quantifiable differences if you average out every woman and every man, but they are not qualitative. And most of them are socially constructed, and would be fixed if we started treating men and women the same. Neither is inherently smarter, neither is inherently kinder, neither is inherently more stoic or stronger or angrier or softer. Everyone is obsessed with the differences between women and men, with finding them and creating them and distancing themselves from the "other half". It's fucked up
This was the mainstream feminist belief like. A decade ago. Thats how hard weβve regressed within mainstream feminism and itβs mainly because of right wingers/radfems/TERFs deciding trans women need to die.
The writer's barely disguised longing for a soft life shared with someone who loves them
Your friendβs unpublished fic idea is kind of a dead wife
i also want to read this guyβs dead wife
So this caption keeps popping up for me on reddit for some reason and it takes me out every time. Just like???? Whoever wrote this, I donβt think anyone has EVER started a horny sentence with βbecause daddy cares about my immortal soul,β let alone ended the thought with incestuous anal. Truly original tbh. Kudos.
