Truthfully I was just glad that over the past few weeks since we all returned from Wonderland he could actually stand being around me. Even if it was pity, it gave me a chance to try and start anew if that's what he wanted. 

Pink has spent the past week trying to convince me that what happened underground was a sign that he might be interested in me but I don't by that. Max avoids me in public the only time he'll talk to me is when he mysteriously shows up at my dorm. Which I never gave him the room number in the first place, so how on earth did he find out? 

Class had dragged on all day and all I wanted was to go back to my dorm and sulk in peace. Of course ever the inconvenient creature, Max was standing infront of my door. This time his performative look was replaced with panic. 

“You have to help me.” He whispered running up to me. “Please.” How utterly bizzare of him. 

“With what, what’s wrong?” I sigh, he never gets the chance to answer because down the hall coming chasing after him is a set of HK's. My eyes widen what had he done? 

“HATTER!” The tallest one in the group of unfamiliar people shouts. 

“Max?” I mutter trying to get an explanation before anyone can break his skull. 

His face is pale and his eyes are fearful. In neither timeline have I ever seen him so shaken up. I quickly scramble keys out of my pocket but I didn't get the time to open the door before Max had grabbed me by the wrist and took off running. 

“What is going on?” I yell at him finally, if I was going on the run with him I atleast should know why. 

“Nothing.” His voice was firm and final. Obviously something had happened or there wouldn't be six people chasing after him. Still I followed him my breath struggling to keep up with our pace. 

Just when I thought I was going to drop dead on the pavement we reached his dorm he opened the door without a key. Does he not lock up his room? Slamming the door shut and locking it he finally breathes a sigh of relief. 

“Okay, fess up” I say glancing around at the cluttered room before me. Everything in there made perfect sense even the hook above his bed it must be where the hat goes while he sleeps. 

“I didn't do anything.” His hands go up in defense “They think I did but it wasn't me I swear.” 

“What do they think you did?” I say and step a little further from the door as footsteps can be heard from outside it. 

“They think I stole pixie dust from the Pixie Hollow lab, I didn't.” His tone is heavy and tired. 

I know he's sick of defending himself everyone knows what people say about him. It isn't true and it's completly unfair. My dad is the white rabbit but that doesn't mean I'm late to everything. “Okay so who did it?” 

“I have no idea I don't know why they think it's me who took it.” With tired eyes Max finally sat down on his bed. He had an affinity for taking wallets but never anything more. Plus he always gave them back, eventually. 

“We can just tell them it wasn't you.” I suggest almost biting the naivety myself before he could. 

“You don't think I haven’t?” He stood up again. “They don't trust me.” 

“Well I’ll tell them then.” I insist. 

“You can't. They'll think your defending me and come after you too I don't want that.” 

“I’m hiding in your dorm with you right now.” I protest “Besides I don't care if they try and come after me, your saying you didn't do it I believe you who cares what they do.” I smile at myself for gaining a bit of confidence. 

He looks stunned at my admission of apathy to others opionions. Then the usual Max flared again and he rolled his eyes. “Yes well that was my mistake.” He hissed out “You should leave now and say I forced you to come along that way they don't take it out on you.” 

“Why do you care if they don't like me, you don't even like me.” 

This made his jaw clench “I like you we're friends.” 

I stop him before he goes further, “We aren't friends Max. You only show up to talk to me in the middle of the night, you still hate me for something nobody will share with me and you don't know me.” 

Truly I didn’t mean to raise my voice at him but this time it didn't make him recoil instead he stepped towards me. “No one will tell you because it isn't actually you who did it it's a time thing.” He crosses his arms. 

He still didn't yell nor point his tone. “Then why can't we be friends?” 

“We are friends Fluffy I just don't want to drag you into my chaos, which I see that I already have and I'm sorry.” He stepped closer again his breath fanning over my neck. “I’m sorry for being so avoident I just don't want to hurt you.” 

“You won't” 

“I will.” 

Beyond the way he was trying to hide it by tipping his hat down a bit to shadow his eyes I could tell, he was hurting. 

“When I saw what we used to have in the other timeline it made me ache physically my chest hurt because all I have ever wanted was to have love and I had it and now it's gone. It was you who I loved but I don't know why or how and I want it to be you for you not for what we used to have.” His bottom lip trembled. “I like you, I don't think you’ll like what comes with being with me in this world.” His addmission makes my stomach burn in sadness. 

“Max” I step towards him and embrace him gently rubbing circles on his back. “I’m not scared of what comes with you, and I like you not for who you were but for who you are now, your a differnet person and I've fallen for you all over again.” I smile lightly breathing into his shoulder. 

“I ran all the way here with you in wedged shoes.” You giggle “You aren’t just someone from a different life you here right now is who I want. You are witty and performative but you're still kind and smart and you are deserving of what you want.” 

His breath hitches “I like you too, you believed me.” It was the smile on his face I pulled back from the hug that sealed my thoughts. The low lamp light was glowing across his face making his pretty brown eyes shine more then normal.

“Hi, I’m Pink.” She grabbed my hand and held a giddy smile on her face.I cautiously introduced myself and then resumed people watching. Pink stuck to my side standing a bit too close for a stranger.

She seemed like she might have been familiar with some of these people based on how extroverted she appeared. “Who’s that?” I nod my head slightly to the group of kids I had been studying. 

“Oh a lot of people call them the Hat Trix. The girl with the hook is Hazel, Captain Hook’s daughter and her cronies, the Smee twins. That boy there is Felix and that is Max.” She said with a grimace once she reached the last name. “Max Hatter he’s the son of Maddox, the most evil guy in Auradon.” She warned. 

“What’s his deal?” I ask, watching as the boy I now knew as Max flicked his coin across the courtyard to someone. 

“He’s no good.” She said and then turned to face me. “What class do you have first?” 

“Alchemy? I think.” I looked around as the people cluttering the space began to disperse. Taking that as my cue to head to class. The room smelled of herbs and mint, a pleasant difference from the halls that smelled like people and shoes. I decided I wanted to sit in the back and observe the way things worked at this school before I started drawing any attention. The class bell rang and I was grateful I found this room in such a grand building. 

The teacher began the lesson talking about safety in the lab and other boring things. Finally he decided we were going to do an ice breaker. I despise ice breakers, the awkward introductions and meaningless small talk. The teacher made us go around the room and talk to someone we hadn’t before. Lucky for me I hadn’t met any of these people. I was practically from the opposite side of the world. 

Ten minutes of the awkward stammering out my name went by excruciatingly slowly. That was until someone tapped my shoulder, I spun to see nobody there. 

“Boo!” The culprit now stood in front of me. Max Hatter the kid Pink had warned me about. 

“How did you-?” I was genuinely impressed. 

With a tip of his hat he said “I’m Max, I couldn’t help but notice your eyes tracking me this morning before class.” He had this cocky grin on his face. 

“What?” I laughed awkwardly knowing he wasn’t lying. “Why would I be looking at you? I don't know you.” I scoff, raising my eyebrow at him trying to keep my breathing even. 

“Maybe you want to know me?” He winked and it made my heart thump against my ribs. He was standing close enough that I could smell the sugary sweet cologne he was wearing. 

I tsk and cross my arms. “What’s so special about you?” I hadn’t meant to come off so stand offish but he was embarrassing me. 

He laughed lowly “I’m the most interesting guy you’ve ever met.” Confident for a kid who was being judged by seemingly everyone else in the room. 

“Oh is that so?” I was having fun for the first time ever during an ice breaker. Unfortunately the world wasn’t on my side and the bell rang. With a sigh I picked my things up and just left the room. There was no need to say goodbye, it was just a class thing it’s not like we’d ever speak again. 

That’s what I thought for the rest of the week, we hadn’t so much as exchanged glances. Well I definitely looked at him but he never seemed to look back. Monday rolled around again as the second week of school began. I was walking back to my dorm when I felt something softly flick my back. 

Turning around to meet the eyes of Max. “Hey?” I told him, he hadn’t spoken to me all week. Why was he here right now? 

“Hey.” Max said with a smile “Where you headed princess?” 

“Back to my room.” I stopped walking though to look at him and try to study his face. 

“Want some company?” He offered. 

“Yours?” I crossed my arms a habit that my mom said made me look like her. 

He looked around and spun for the drama of it all, typical Max flourish from what I've seen. “Who else?” 

I didn’t say anything in response and just kept heading to my dorm. He followed right beside me. “So not a fan of me princess?” His voice was smug. 

“I don’t know you.” A stiff laugh came out of me, he made me nervous. 

“You sure watch me a lot.” He smirked at me again. “A little strange of a hero kid to be obsessed with the likes of me.” 

“I’m not obsessed with you, you perform for the school. Why is me watching you so weird to you?” I huff blowing a string of hair out of my face. 

“You watch me when I'm not performing your like my personal stalker.” He cackled. “You’d think you’d actually want to talk to me but I guess not.” He sarcastically began to walk away. 

“Wait.” I call out cursing my desperateness. 

He turned around with a huge Cheshire cat style grin, the Wonderland really coming out of him. “Oh now she wants to talk to me.” He walked back over and I sighed. 

“I don’t get you.” I say quietly “We met once you never spoke to me until just now you’ve winked at me and teased me and made fun of me. Are you flirting or trying to start a fight?” 

This time Max really laughed “Oh wow, you really are an HK. I’m obviously not trying to fight the daughter of a demi god.” He shook his head and looked at me like that was supposed to be obvious. 

“So what is the deal then?” I ask him and instead of words he leans over and kisses my cheek. 

“I don’t know why don’t you tell me princess, you're the one who can’t keep your eyes to yourself.”

It pained him really to wake you. He felt like it was partly his fault that your rest was being disturbed. With a small shake of a shoulder you snapped your eyes open, anxiety overtaking you once again. Max noticed how as soon as you woke up you were prepared to go to battle. 

“It’s okay.” He whispered although how honest he was being was unknown. 

You take in your surroundings to realize you had been shrunk down to a size smaller than a flower. “Where are we?” You didn’t give him time to answer, just stood up and began planning with the group. 

Recuperation took a minute for Max, the girl that he had longed for was just sleeping on him. It was like a dream come true but how could he be happy when it wasn’t your choice instead it was his father plotting something else to stop you. He finally stumbled over to the group with wide eyes getting in on the huddle. 

Hazel was always the quick witted one of the group so nobody was shocked when she said “Well now that the prince has recovered from kissing sleeping beauty he can actually help us figure out what’s going on.” Her tone was playful but it made you feel weird. 

Sure you had liked Max but nobody knew that right? 

Certainly they knew that you hadn’t actually been kissing. 

“It’s chess.” Chloe says. “A simple game if we beat Maddox maybe we’ll be let go.” She directs Robbie Hood to a square on the board. The square then launched him directly into the forest. 

“Nice plan.” Hazel mutters “it’s naive to think this would be so easy get your head out of your tiara princess.” 

“She’s right.” This time it was you who spoke up. “We have to fight dirty and get in the mind of a villain.” Max nodded along to every word you said like he was trying to give you approval. 

Then began the fight. Mechanical chess pieces were being taken out and turned into swirly black smoke when hit. It wasn’t hard to fight them per se just tiring. You had swept one of the pieces' knees and watched them vanish. To no avail. The board slid you all back to where you started and all the pieces you had taken out appeared like they never left. 

“This isn’t possible.” Chloe shouted. Max was swaying on his feet beside you clearly exhausted from the fight and he nodded at Chloe's words. Max Hatter was never known to be a fighter, he liked to tease and talk but to actually get physical you were unsure his thin frame would even cause damage. He held his own when he had to. 

“No, there's always a way to win.” You yell back remembering a class you took on battle strategy and how important morale was to a team. The fight resumes like it never ended except this time a few more of us get captured. 

You watch Max slide across the board to try and help Pink as she screams while being carried by the robotic creations. He got grabbed by two pawns. You knew better than to do exactly what he had done and fall right into their trap but he looked scared. 

He was also looking right at you. It’s not like you had known Max forever a few months maybe but you had never seen his performative facade collapse until now. So as any kind person would do to ease their friends mind you tried to save him from the pieces. An attempt made in vain. Eventually Red and Hazel save us using Maddox’s trap against him. 

Chloe looked upset but you couldn’t fathom why we were all okay now we won. The group was huddled up and Max couldn’t help but hug you. It wasn’t anything deep, at least not that you could tell, it was a quick friendly hug among people who had just won a fight for their lives. To Max it was a step towards being real and honest. 

Your attempt to save him when everyone else treated him like he was a bad guy meant something to him. It meant someone trusted him and how he beamed at the fact that someone was you. 

“Wow, look at the love birds.” Hazel cackled, causing you and Max to freeze up awkwardly. Scrambling to talk to someone else out of fear that Max might find out you actually liked him. 

The walk to the place you all planned on spending the night was absolutely beautiful. Mushrooms lit up by enchanting fireflies. Flowers that seemed to glow as you walked past. Even the Wonderland sky was painted with hues of pink and orange. It was absolutely the perfect night Max thought. 

Setting up camp didn’t take long either; Hazel was already circled in with Max and Felix. From what you could hear they were laughing at him. Saying things like “Lovesick” and “Yearning.” It was hard to hear above the rustling and the crickets but you caught it. 

Your heart sank, did Max like someone? You were deep in thought trying to figure out who it could be. Not trying to be jealous but your stomach still twisted at the thought. You thought of the devil and so he appeared. He was standing in front of you, hat in hand, the purple in his hair illuminated by the glowing lights. 

“Could we go somewhere to talk?” The anxiety in his voice made you quiver. Did he know that you liked him? Was this a rejection plan? All you could do was nod as you followed him into the meadow. 

Deep enough that nobody would hear you unless you screamed. “What’s wrong?” Your voice was unusually shy, nerves wrecked you. 

“Nothing's wrong, I'd just rather you hear it from me than one of Hazel’s jokes.” Max gulped so loud that if this wasn’t so tense you would’ve busted out laughing. 

“Hear what? What’s going on?” Your voice was steady but quiet. He just stared at you fidgeting with his collar face a blazing pink. “Hatter?” You urged him patience and anxiety never mixed well. 

“I like you like you know like in a I wanna hold your hand type way that’s a dumb way of saying that. I’m sorry I know you're not into me but I figured I should tell you before you find out on your own.” He grimaced and shook his head as he apologized once more.

You stared in shock. You had liked him too and why was he sorry? “Why are you apologizing for liking me?” Your anxiety was subsiding. Without warning you grabbed him by the shoulders “Don’t be sorry silly.” Your smile made his stomach do flips. 

See Max was never good with feelings he liked to pretend he didn’t have any. With you he wanted to feel things and although the hope was small it was still there inside him. 

He opened his mouth to respond but you were quicker. Placing your lips to his with a small smile. Utter shock filled him and it took him a minute to reciprocate but boy when he did. He had lifted you up, spun you around your lips still attached to him and pushed you against the nearest tree. Ever so gently and passionately. “Really?” He said after you broke apart to breathe “Me?” 

“Yes you.” You kissed him again this time way more confidently and everything felt right. It was just you two the way you both wanted it.

I couldn’t name her if I wanted to just another priss who thought she could get away with whatever she wanted. No, that certainly wasn’t how I was raised. She barely got a single hit on me but she split my lip open. I must admit the rest of the blood came from me headbutting her tooth out.

It was sick the amount that one tooth bled and she spit it at me. It had become a waste of my time to continue fighting. She clearly got my message. I wandered my way to Max’s dorm not wanting my roommate to see me with blood all over my face. 

I knocked on the door and instantly it swung open. Max was standing leaning on the door frame like he expected me to show up. “Is that blood?” He scrunched up his face. 

“It's not mine.” I shrug as he pulls me into his room. 

“Is that supposed to make me feel better?” I hated the way he was looking at me. I know he wanted to be known as someone far away from all the violence he hated being connected to his dad. “Sit down.” He said as he walked into his bathroom. 

His bed had dark purple sheets and grey striped pillows. It was so perfectly him. The posters on the wall really made my heart swell. He had emo bands plastered up, freaking adorable. 

Max came out of the bathroom holding a wet towel. He began wiping the blood off my face. “I thought you said it wasn’t yours.” I wince as he presses into the cut on my lip. 

“Mostly, look I didn’t even mean to make her bleed okay she spit her tooth blood at me.” I waited for him to respond instead he was gagging dramatically. “This is someone else’s tooth blood.” He rolled his eyes and handed me the towel. I couldn’t help but laugh at his drama. The comedy of the moment didn’t last long because he tucked my hair behind my ears and whispered. “Why were you fighting again you said you wouldn’t.” 

I couldn’t make eye contact with him. I had assured him so many times before that I'd be done fighting. “I couldn’t help it, she had no right to say what she said.” I finally met his eyes. 

“What’d she say?” I wouldn’t tell him I never did, instead I just shook my head. “Was it about me?” 

“Look it doesn’t matter what she said, it just matters that it was wrong.” I crossed my arms and spun to face him. “Bet she’ll never say it again.” I try to smile at him but it clearly wasn’t the time. 

“You can’t beat people up over me.” He sounded oddly stern for Max, who is usually so carefree. “You’ll get in trouble or worse you’ll get hurt.” I just sighed at him lowly. I knew he was right but that didn’t mean I had to like it. “What they say doesn’t bother me. Besides i’m pretty sure you've sent your message to everyone. What is this strike number eight?” Max raised his eyebrow at me and it made me giggle. 

I held up nine fingers and he pushed them down with a puff through his nose. “I’m sorry I won’t do it again.” His arm came swiftly over my shoulder and he squeezed. 

“I’m not mad.” He laid his head on top of mine and the silence became comfortable and still. 

I had a thought that felt foreign to me. Maybe it was mean but it was honest. Why should we care about everyone else’s happiness when ours was disregarded in the mix. “The garden is a maze we need to hurry before they catch on we’ll need time.” I smile a toothy grin. I can feel how this watch has affected me. My whole opinion changed and I no longer felt empathy for Red or Chloe they ruined the best thing in my life. 

We ran out of the lab manically laughing together. It felt so good to be next to him. “Red is heartless.” He said as we ran, “But we’re gonna fix this.” When his eyes met mine I saw something I had never seen before. A terrifying grudge was inside of him, but he was Max and I ruined his life so sticking by him was no longer a choice, it was a promise.  

The maze in the garden was way bigger than I expected. The walls kept changing around it was nonsensical movement. No pattern or any clues as to how to reach the center. 

There was no plan for our movement, just fast paced steps trying not to get closed into moving shrubs. We ran until we had no breath and had to stop. “Max.” I turned to him as we sat on a pink bench. 

“When we get the pocket watch, where are we going to go back in time?” I almost began to teeth chatter but instead I clenched my jaw.

“To the moment before Red and Chloe went back in time so nothing will have changed.” His head was held high, his words sounded so sure. “No matter what the future holds there I’ll get a chance to be happy, to make sure my father never went mad.” 

I think for a moment about how me and him would still carry all the trauma from this new timeline as we would still remember everything but it didn’t seem to matter to him. “What about us?” I clear my throat “I mean now that you’re practically a different person how could you just go back to being a shy nerd?” 

He glanced over at me briefly, his lips in a thin line. “We should keep moving.” So we did. We walked around aimlessly. 

“We need a plan we can’t just run around forever.” I sigh irritated. Normally this was fun. I enjoyed a whimsical walk around but right now I was on edge. The watch still on my wrist felt heavier than before like it was merging and becoming a part of me. 

“We just need to reach the center.” He was also irritated. “Screw a plan, just keep moving.” I told him I would help him and this was his grand idea so I did as he told me. The heat and walking around circles really did a number on us after a while. “Fuck!” I watched his boot kick a loose stone. 

“What?” I shout back matching his level of annoyance. “Why do you have to yell all the time? I told you we needed a plan but no of course you don’t listen to me!” I don’t think I have ever yelled at anyone let alone him. Most definitely I had never yelled at anyone like I was about to tear them apart, but that’s how I just yelled at him. He must have picked up on that because he recoiled. He physically recoiled. 

“I’m sorry” I said and shook my head quickly trying to step towards him. He took another step back, that’s right he doesn’t know me anymore and the little trust I had built had broken just like that. “Max, I'm sorry I’m not here to fight, I just want to help.”  

“There!” He perked up and pointed as a shrub moved revealing the center of the garden. The vault that held the answer to getting his life back and in turn our life back. We sprinted towards it before the walls could move again. 

Soon came the issue though Red and Chloe had followed us somehow. They were standing in front of the vault. Chloe held a sword and Red looked ready to jump at us. “Wow what happened to you.” Was she seriously sizing me up? 

“Max and I have done some talking and we decided that time travel was all a big mistake. A mistake that is your fault.” I emphasised my words with a hand on Max’s shoulder. 

“What did you do to her?” Chloe yelled. “He’s using you.” 

“No” I screamed. It was an unusual reaction but it felt so nice to finally say it. “You did this both of you. You ruined his life, you ruined my relationship and you are both being stuck up princesses like that’s actually who you are!” 

Max took a step forward “Get out of our way.” He demanded. 

The girls were ready to fight but I was smarter then they might have guessed and whilst pretending like I was about to strike I snuck behind them quickly stealing the pocket watch out of the vault. 

Apparently the two princesses weren’t the only ones trying to stop us because Pink, now a giant, stomped her foot and broke the ground underneath us. Shamelessly I clutched onto Max as we fell. I hated falling even down the rabbit hole to get to Wonderland. Finally we thunked into the ground the pocket watch flinging out of my hands as I struggled to catch a breath. 

“No! The watch where is the watch?” Max scrambled around searching through rubble and piles of what seemed to be an underground collapsed building. 

There was this beautiful shiny well in the middle. The water was so blue it was almost unreal. Chloe grabbed the watch before anyone else had even spotted it. She took her turn to join the rest of us in shouting. 

“We’re going to take a trip to the future. A future where I’m finally on top!” Her curls were swishing around her face. I’m not convinced anyone expected that we all just stood mouth ajar for a moment before Red began to bargain with her. 

I took that as my chance, my opportunity to come up with a new plan. I glanced at the purple cloaked boy behind me. Apparently he was thinking the same because he ran at the two girls. Red struggled the watch out of Chloe’s grasp with a few harsh words.

Max was always a fast guy though and before Red even knew it the Hatter boy had snatched the golden watch out of her hands. 

I laughed and stood beside Max cackling like a madman. I was unsure if I was even myself anymore, the daughter of the white rabbit was now acting like the old queen of hearts. Then the earth shook and the ceiling started to collapse in before it could hit me Max shoved me away. 

A huge pile of dust and stone smacked into him. I watched in horror. “Help please” He called out under the rubble. All three of us reached him at lightning speed picking the stone up so he could move. 

He took the hand I offered him to stand up and said “What about the watch?” He wasn’t talking to me, he was talking to Red and it angered me. 

“I think we have to face what we have done and not make anymore messes but I promise I won't give up on you, or your dad.” Red threw the pocket watch into the shiny blue well. 

I screeched a dreadful scream. “How could you do that!” My eyes were so wide I thought they might explode. Then my anger turned to Max. “How could you let her do that! What about your life, what about our happy ending!” 

Red and Chloe tried to restrain me. This was ludicrous. Why couldn’t I have my true love, my happy ending. They succeeded in holding me still long enough for Max to peel the watch he had made off my wrist. 

I was still wailing, just not violently anymore. In the reflection of the water I saw my white hair and I felt like me again. No anger, no aggression, just a girl mourning her friends and her partner. 

As we all climbed out of the pitt we were buried in Max hung back beside me “If we’re truly each other's happy ending we’ll come back together.” He didn’t say it with the flourish that he had when he was performing. He didn’t say it with any anger or resentment. He said it because he meant it and oh how wonderful that felt.

No literally what the hell. The chessboard was pink and blue. It was absolutely beautiful until I realized there was no way to get off of it. We were shrunken down to mini figure sizes. Pawns on Maddox’s chess board. Soon mechanical guard chess pieces appeared opposite of us. “It’s just chess” Chloe said as if we weren’t bug sized and the wrong timing meant someone squashing us under their boot.

“The start of a chess game is always pawn forward by two Robbie go up to that square.” Chloe was a smart girl. She probably grew up playing chess so we kind of followed her lead. As soon as Robbie stood on the square it sprung up launching him in the air.  

“What the hell” I said, mimicking Felix from earlier. “It isn’t just chess, it would never be that easy.” I say to the group. 

Chloe flails her hands up “No just let me try again!” She's insistent but thankfully I'm not the only one who knows this is a bad idea. 

“It's not normal chess, you have to put yourself in the shoes of a villain, that's how we win.” There was a reason we all kind of let Red be the leader of us; she was smart and confident. We really needed someone with her skills. 

Max nodded along as Red explained what we needed to do. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. The purple really enhanced his dark eyes. Hazel Hook was practically itching for this fight. With a lunge and a point of her hook she had knocked down one of the figures. It disappeared into purple smoke just like the flamingos had when they were hit. 

“That’s it!” I yell to the group “If you get them to hit the ground they disappear.” My words set off a domino effect. Each one of us took on a chess piece of our own but just as quickly as we knocked them out they came right back. Just like a pesky garden weed. Max had his hands up like he was gonna throw a punch. An ironic sight to me, Max once tried to fight off some guy who hit on me but he got his ass beat. He couldn’t throw a punch. 

It made me giggle to myself a bit but as I let myself be distracted the chess pieces had laser focus. I was grabbed practically thrown and held down kneeling on the floor. Unexpectedly Max slid towards me, his purple cloak flowing behind him. I tried to reach out to let him pull me away from these evil creatures but they got him just as quickly as they got me. 

It seemed we had all been beaten but Red Chloe and Hazel saved the day using a poison flower against the ‘king’ of the board. The pieces swirled in eerie purple smoke. We had won. 

Everyone circled in together cheering. Hazel even hugged me. Odd, very odd, it made me recoil a bit. She was so hard around the edges but it hit me that just like Max she was just another kid who suffered from who their parents were. 

Chloe was lingering back as we all went to keep walking and my heart sank with envy and hurt as Max walked up to her. It was almost affectionate the way he asked if she was okay. Did he like her? I knew better than to eavesdrop. 

I did it anyway. As much as it hurt my heart to see him approach her it was doubled by the way she brushed him off. Was this what he was used to? Why was everyone so upset with him? He wasn’t his dad, he was just Max. He liked to invent things and take care of stray cats. Poor Max. I tried to approach him after Chloe rushed him away but he just walked past me like I didn’t exist. 

“What did I ever do to you Hatter?” I didn’t mean to yell at him. Instantly I recoiled. 

“You have been obsessed with me all day! Why? What is the deal?” He was yelling at me. Everyone’s head turned to stare at us. “We aren’t friends, we have never been friends and you have always made sure of that so why are you so insistent on talking to me?” He was heaving angrily. What had I done? 

I couldn’t muster any words as I felt heat rush to my face. I just let him walk on, trailing the group way behind. I tried to scrape through the new memories I had the ones I didn’t remember making but I have no idea what it was that I did to make him hate me. 

I had eaten the cookie Pink offered me in silence. Feeling my body twist and coil until it was normal size. I couldn’t have cared any less about what size I was. I wanted to sneak away, to go get the pocket watch to turn things right. Too much empathy in my heart for Red stopped me. No matter how bad I ached I still had a chance of getting him back in this timeline. With no ideas of how and nothing but a tiny itty bitty sliver of hope that I was clinging to. 

Max was determined to break into his dads lab and steal the oraculum but it was dark and we needed a place to hold up. “I know a place.” Pink spoke in her usual happy upbeat tone. 

We walked some more and then came to a very familiar place. “The white rabbit’s gone till spring. I'm sure he wouldn’t mind.” Pink walked right into my house. 

“You could always ask his daughter.” Max raised his eyebrows at the pink haired girl. So breaking and entering wasn’t okay with him? 

“I don’t mind” I tried to fake a smile but inside I was still torn up. We walked in and the smell was all too familiar carrot cake and recently put out fire wood. Red and Chloe had some strange tension. Hazel and Max were talking quietly in the corner. It was suspicious the way he kept looking around to make sure nobody was listening. I watch him slip out the small back door of my cottage. I want to follow but I know better so I sink down by Hazel instead. 

“Where’s he off to?” I ask her defeated. 

Hazel chimes in with a response that I never could have predicted. “If you want to gain Max’s trust go help him.” She said it so calmly like she knew what she was saying. But did she truly? I tried to help him before and all I got was yelled at. 

“Look fluffy, Max is a guarded guy and what you did to him all those years ago still bothers him but now he needs help in his dad’s lab. If you help him, maybe it could make up for it.” She sighed as if annoyed by giving advice. 

“Did you just call me fluffy?” I tilt my head and scrunch my nose which probably didn’t help my case. 

“Go!” She waves her hands at me. I take off in the direction that Max left in squealing as the wind hits my hair. It was fun to run around Wonderland with him again even if he had yet to know I was there. 

Apparently Max Hatter walked like a snail because it didn’t take much to catch up. “Let me help you, it could be trapped. You need back up.” I wasn’t exactly asking him. 

His face contorted into a grimace but he finally soothed it out. “Fine.” That’s enough of an invitation for me. We reached the lab in no time taking Max’s short cut, the lab was dark with oddly shaped stained glass windows. I didn’t remember it looking like that in the time before. 

“There” Max pointed to a hole in the window as he squeezed through. As I entered my skirt got caught on glass and I couldn’t pull through. 

“Can you maybe pull?” I was dying inside from not even being able to enter a window by myself. He didn’t say anything about it just grabbed my hands, I only slightly grimaced when the glass tore a hole in my white skirt. 

The oraculum was sitting on the desk right in front of us. Guarded by Chessy, the manipulative daughter of the Cheshire cat.  “Well well cat got your tongue?” She practically hissed at us. “Come to see if your dad was actually crazy Max?” Chessy’s tail whipped like she was excited about something. If he looked he would see that Red had been lying. He’d see that I accidentally had a hand in ruining his life. Surely he’d hate me then. 

“Don’t we need that to beat your father.” I pleaded with him. Chessy’s whispers enchanted him and he looked into the invention his father curated. I hissed and backed up as the minutes ticked by. He would know that this was partially my fault. 

I ran at Chessy “You bitch” But she disappeared practically into the air. “Max” I whisper as he finally turns to look at me, a single tear resting on his cheek. 

“My father was right?” He was yelling again but this time it didn’t seem at me. I began to cower, waiting for the final blow. He knew. “I was happy.” A pause that lingered far too long “we were happy.” 

I can’t do anything but nod “I’m sorry I never meant for anything to happen or to change I didn’t know I wasn’t even meant to be there.” I ramble the chattering of my teeth over taking most of what I said. 

He stared at me, “This is all Red’s fault.” His eyes turned sinister “Will you help me fix this? Get revenge on Red?” I shake my head slowly. 

“I can’t betray them, going back in time would change more things, who knows if it’d be better.” I was shaking 

“Please please we deserve our happy ending and I have an idea that’s going to make that happen.” Max Hatter was kneeling in front of me begging for my help. He was right, it was my fault I had to help him. All I wanted was to have him back and this is how I could have that. 

“Okay.” My lips stop trembling and I pull him up off the ground. “I’ll do it.”

Things were better for Red and Chloe when we got back to our real timeline. Unknowingly things were way worse for me. It was the first day of school at auradon prep, white hair flailed on my shoulders just as it usually did. There was no telling what today would hold, only hopes of an ordinary school day with new friends and a great boyfriend. 

Max Hatter, I’d known him most of your life but it wasn’t until recently we became a “thing” . It was happy and comfortable. He was shy and dotting, complimenting the outgoing and energetic personality I carried. When I reached the courtyard that morning something strange began. People were calling Red a princess and HK she was being fawned over by a Madrigal. Who was the girl with pink hair? 

Perhaps everything didn’t go to plan, that’s when I heard his voice echoing through the courtyard unusually loud. His purple hair finally met your eyes. Wait, purple hair? Was that Max? 

Walking over to his eccentric group of friends felt wrong, Max didn’t befriend a bunch of no gooders. He was shy and friendly. Yet I looked at him now picking someone's pocket. I walked there anyway, timidly approaching the group. 

“Rabbit” Max seemingly snarled at me. “Come to rob us of our watches have you?” His voice is confident and almost threatening. 

“What?” I mutter staring down at my shoes. “Max what on earth are you doing?” 

“What’s the matter, can't take a little bit of a show?” He smirked. 

Red and Chloe were walking by and I skittered to catch up with them. “Uh guys what did we do? My boyfriend doesn’t seem to like me and he’s a VK now?” I say through anxious chattering lips. 

“Yeah and I have a sister.” Red adds “We might have messed a few things up.” She grimaces. 

I needed to fix things. It had been just a single night since we’d gotten back but seemingly things were very wrong. “We have to undo this!” I shouted at my new friends if I could call them that. 

“We can’t.” Chloe assures me “My mom will be beheaded and Red’s mom will still be evil.” 

I understood what she was saying but whatever happened to Max to change him into whatever he was now had to be bad. “What about me?” I felt selfish saying it but it came out regardless. 

Then a clatter of a coin got our attention. Max had yelled something at Robbie Hood about giving to a collection box and threw a coin at him. 

Luis Madriagal chimed in “Drop the act Hatter no matter how hard you pretend we know you're just like your father.” 

What was wrong with Max’s father? Maddox had always been a welcoming calm presence to you. “Whats wrong with his dad?” I ask Luis.

“You mean the number one villain in all of Auradon?’ Yeah that was new. 

Max stood looking at me almost like he wanted to say something. He didn’t. I chatter my teeth again to try and keep calm, an anxious habit I have always had. Suddenly a pink card flies through the air. 

Red catches it and gasps just before a curly haired boy holding his own stack of cards snatches it. “Hey, give that back!.” I demand and Max takes it out of the kids hand to shove it back to Red. Maybe he wasn’t so evil. 

“What’s wrong?” Chloe stands beside Red, her head held high like it usually is. 

“Maddox Hatter has my mom.” Red’s voice almost trembles but she barely lets it show. “She’s trapped in wonderland with him.” 

 I swallow hard and follow Red Chloe and Pink to the dorms as we try to come up with a plan. 

Red insists we go to Wonderland. I’m not sure I think it’s a good idea at all, it is my home but apparently everything has changed now. We approached the portal to Wonderland and just as we were about to jump a voice came from behind us. 

“We’re coming to Wonderland with you.” It was that curly haired boy with the cards. His name was Felix I think. Chloe crossed her arms and bobbed her head around at the VKs standing behind the portal. “Our interests don’t exactly align.” She looked ready to throw punches unusually aggressive for a princess. 

“You need someone who can beat my father at his own game.” It was Max this time who spoke. “I can help with that.” 

Goosebumps rose on my arms thinking about going on a rescue mission with my accidental ex boyfriend. It appeared I had no say because Red was inviting them to jump. I went first, it was the “rabbit hole” after all. 

When we cascaded down the almost never ending tunnel I saw many things. Almost like memories that hadn’t happened yet. I was sitting in front of this purple throne in a clock tower. My hair was black and it was eerily dark and quiet. The image quickly shot out of my brain as I landed with a thump onto a patch of sunflowers. 

The breath of fresh air didn’t last long because a body smacked down on top of me. It took me a moment to regain my composure after getting the air knocked out of me before I realized it was Max. 

He quickly flailed off of me. “Sorry,” he muttered, barely intelligible. 

The rest of the group was already up and off on their way to the garden but I stood behind awkwardly. Parts of me wished I had never gone back in time so at least if my life changed I wouldn’t know it. 

Max also hung behind studying something in the distance. I decided I wanted to study him. He was just as pretty as ever, just with brighter colors adorning him. He gave off a different vibe too, not as shy or caring. I knew the boy I had known had to be in there somewhere but whatever Maddox had going on now must have really affected Max. 

“What is it?” I ask him as he squints towards where the group is walking. His scoff accompanied with a shake of his head makes me want to break down and bawl like a baby. 

He picks up his pace catching up with the group but I linger behind still. Anxiety eating up at me. How would I ever get him back? 

The garden had pretty flamingos made of flowers it was enchanting. Not as enchanting as the garden, Me and Max always talked about planting together. It was sad seeing him so apathetic to plants when that was our greatest thing in common. “Whats that?” I shout pointing to a mechanical bird looking at me with magic purple eyes. 

“My father, he's using it to spy on us.” Max shouted back. The panic on everyone's faces was the most intense thing I had ever seen. Even Luis, strong as ever looked horrified. 

“What do we do?” Red spoke up, the only one of us not completely stunned. 

“We could use it to spy on him instead.” Chloe suggested a bit confusing for such a goodie goodie. 

Max instantly shook his head “Way too dangerous we need to run.” I agreed with Max and so did Red. Before we could come to a group decision the beautiful floral flamingos turned mechanic and we all darted in different directions as the birds attacked. 

I tried to hide inside of a tree but I didn’t exactly fit. My teeth chattered so loud I knew the birds would find me. Just as a flamingo beak almost got me in the face, a hand grabbed under my shoulder and yanked me into the air. I steadied my feet on a sign post nailed to the big tree. “Thank you” 

I looked up slowly only to realize it was Max who had grabbed me. Eye contact felt awkwardly nice. “Don’t thank me, it's my dads fault.” 

I grimaced and wanted to say something, tell him it wasn’t him. I didn’t get the chance because a bird flew at me. Not a flamingo but a mechanical dodo like the one spying on us. I flailed on my feet and began to fall backwards. 

Panic set in and I heard an awful scream. It wasn’t mine, it was his. He still cared? Just before I could smack into the ground Luis Madrigal of course caught me. I couldn’t help but notice how uncomfortable that made Max. Maybe just maybe love transcended our time catastrophe even if he hadn’t realized it yet.
