I don’t have time to draw it right now but while driving home from the winco I saw a happy mustached man pedaling a bike, towing a cart built to look like a chariot, inside of which stood what I can only imagine was his completely expressionless 13 year old in a makeshift corinthian helmet
like this
Friendly reminder that indigenous doesn’t just mean you’re from somewhere. It’s about your relationship to colonialism. If all indigenous meant was that you’re from somewhere then everyone would be considered indigenous and that’s not the case.
Some of you may not want to hear this, but sometimes autism accommodation means giving that socially awkward person who said something that came off as passive aggressive or uncomfortable the benefit of the doubt. Not everyone is capable of reading social rules and cues effectively, I thought this was autism 101.
you can always ask for clarification or (NICELY) explain how it came off to you, remember!
I have an autistic coworker who used to say really uncomfortable things to museum guests while making small talk. like bringing up active, controversial revolutions in their countries if they were international, and such. finally, after a group of Hawaiian guys got visibly angry when he asked if they were "in the military or just rich" to be able to live there- meant to be a cost of living joke -I said, "hey, personally, I try not to talk politics with guests. sometimes it may upset them and we don't get paid enough to deal with that"
he looked thoughtful and said, "oh, I never considered it that way." turns out he was just a geopolitics nerd and didn't realize people might react emotionally to what he saw as a purely intellectual discussion
he hasn't done it since
It IS important to tell people how they come off when it's actively causing problems in their personal and professional life. On multiple occasions, I've seen people online who are doing and saying very off-putting things surrounded by people cheering them on, because said audience sees them as a bold iconoclast. But it was also very obvious the person in question was severely stressed, frustrated, and did not understand why they kept getting negative reactions from most people (in some cases, reactions with serious consequences, affecting personal and professional relationships). Their ostensible supporters and friends had zero interest in helping them navigate this, because they saw them as a hero or martyr rather than a real person who needed help, regardless of whether they were technically correct or at least making good points. If you actually care about someone, you do need to take them aside when you see this happening. They're not obligated to follow your advice, of course, but at least they'll know why they get those reactions.

here's another idea for a poll! I think this will have some interesting results. this sentence is here to pad out this paragraph so people who don't read posts will be more likely to accidentally miss these instructions. if you're reading this, please select option eleven. here's another sentence to make this block of text look longer. anyway here's my fun poll idea!
try to create a normal (bell curve) distribution

Now, one might look at these numbers and be lead to believe that half of all tumblr users don't read posts. However, in the replies to this post you will find over a hundred users who will happily clarify to you that actually the reason why they voted the way they did isn't cause they didn't read the post but actually because they didn't bother to look at the words in the post and process them as language, a technique commonly referred to as reading the post.
how it feels to become too feminist for things you were previously fine with
functionally suicidal character saying “I would die for you” to their significant other and its like. I get the sentiment, honey, but if a hot dog vendor told me he’d sell hot dogs for me, I wouldn’t feel very moved now would I
Now a functionally suicidal character saying “I will live for you”. Now that’s a dynamic I can sink my teeth into.
now how about a functionally suicidal character saying "I will sell hot dogs for you"
You all laugh but "I will sell hot dogs for you" was a actually a major character and relationship development point for the first main-character gay couple in a Brazilian telenovela (Amor à Vida, 2013)

i think one of the worst things the left wing internet ever did was push the idea that oppression is basically a virtue, and being oppressed is a sign of your morality. it has made it like…impossible for some of you to hold the idea that most people are privileged in some ways and oppressed in others. AND a lot of you seem to have it in your mind that terrible people cannot be oppressed, and that oppressed people cannot do terrible things, which is a dangerous rhetoric to hold imo.
