Would you rather spend a day running errands in + or - 30°C?
30°C (86°F)
-30°C (-22°F)
I've never been anywhere colder than -3°C but I'll still choose freezing over sweating.
over a quarter of those polled says they'd rather die horribly of hypothermia than get a little sweaty and i really really try not to go here but yeah i dont have trouble believing this is the celibacy website. extremities rotting and falling off like "yeah but i can always put another layer on"
what are you talking about?
I grew up in Edmonton, a place where people routinely have to go about their normal lives in -30, and all you do is put on a decent fucking jacket and gloves. like do you understand that hypothermia isn't just a magic thing that happens to you when the air temperature is low, it actually requires your body temperature to plummet, which you can prevent with technologies that have been available to humans for tens of thousands of years??
And this (along with a lot of the notes) is how you can tell just how little contiguous USAmericans learn outside of their own bubble.
“86F just means you’ll get a little sweaty, -22F will literally kill you!!!”
86F temperatures also kill! And people have lived just fine at much lower temperatures than -22F, even just this winter!
You’re just used to and have a culture adapted around even higher temperatures than that in the US. If you’ve paid any attention to the UK over the past decade or so of summers, you’ll hear how devastating temperatures that high can be when people are not equipped for it.
Like. Fucking.
People are in the comments of this post responding to people who live in cold climates that, “no you’re dying too! Look at the data! There are thousands of death by cold each year in the coldest places on earth!” And I’m over here thinking to myself, have these people not seen the thousands of deaths being reported on from the UK every summer for a decade or so because of temperatures “only” around 30C? Or is the confirmation bias so strong that this doesn’t end up sinking in each year because “lol those silly Brits can’t handle a tiny bit of warmth? Sounds like a non-issue lmao”. And that’s one country where I keep track of this stuff because my partner lives there. There are heat deaths in other places that don’t involve heat more than 30C. That is extreme heat in certain places because of how structures are built and the accessibility (or lack) of air conditioning.
Frustrates me to no end.
Would anyone else from the USA besides me care to chime in about our lack of experience with temperatures over 85/under -22, and relative awareness of their lethality?
Absolutely wild that this person is calling it a USAism to think that -30 is significantly more extreme than +30. There are only a handful of population centers in the entire world that ever have average monthly temperatures at or below -30c during the winter, while there are thousands of cities that have monthly average temperatures at or above 30c. Unprotected 30c will kill some people over the course of hours, while -30c will kill all people over the course of minutes.
And yeah, a heat wave in the UK could have temps of 30c and it will have a death toll, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say if the same city had -30c temperatures for the same amount of time would, you know, maybe be a bit worse.
I'm pretty sure this is a human thing given the temperature ranges humans tend to populate.
Edit: I've lived in different cities that demand regular functioning as low as about -20c in the morning or evening and as high as about 45c sustained from around noon to sun down. And I've done winter camping in the colder areas I've lived in, going up in the mountains where it is even colder. I've got experience with both ends of the spectrum.
ridiculous argument. i’m living in a -20c climate right now and it definitely is worse. temperature drops are so dangerous especially in cities—just look at NYC in the last couple of weeks due to the extreme cold
I GOT A FUCKING RAISE THE POTATO WORKED WTF

““When I was about 20 years old, I met an old pastor’s wife who told me that when she was young and had her first child, she didn’t believe in striking children, although spanking kids with a switch pulled from a tree was standard punishment at the time. But one day, when her son was four or five, he did something that she felt warranted a spanking–the first in his life. She told him that he would have to go outside himself and find a switch for her to hit him with. The boy was gone a long time. And when he came back in, he was crying. He said to her, “Mama, I couldn’t find a switch, but here’s a rock that you can throw at me.” All of a sudden the mother understood how the situation felt from the child’s point of view: that if my mother wants to hurt me, then it makes no difference what she does it with; she might as well do it with a stone. And the mother took the boy into her lap and they both cried. Then she laid the rock on a shelf in the kitchen to remind herself forever: never violence. And that is something I think everyone should keep in mind. Because if violence begins in the nursery one can raise children into violence.””
— Astrid Lindgren, author of Pippi Longstocking, 1978 Peace Prize Acceptance Speech (via jillymomcraftypants)
In 1978, when she received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, Lindgren spoke against corporal punishment of children in a speech entitled Never Violence! After that, she teamed up with scientists, journalists and politicians to promote non-violent upbringing. In 1979, a law was introduced in Sweden prohibiting violence against children in response to her demands. Until then there was no such law anywhere in the world.
What a legacy. We’re so lucky to have had her.
Here are the 2024 vaccine recommendation schedules. They’ve already been wiped from the cdc site. Save them and share widely, especially to your friends with kids.

Okay fuck it if this post reaches 666k notes by the end of 2023 I'll practise basic self care
Why 666k? Because it's funny and impossible so good fucking luck
Well, OP, I’m officially invested in this shit. Your whiny ass is doing self care if I have to drive to your goddamn house and do it for you.
By Talos this can't be happening
reblog this everyone i wanna see what happens when op’s reverse-hubris forces them to practice basic self care.
why? because it’s funny and completely possible actually so good fucking luck op
I figured out roughly how many notes it's been getting per day and multiplied that by the number of days left until the end of 2023
If we keep it going at this rate we'll be far past 666k
IMPORTANT
Okay so clearly I've underestimated y'all
So how about we make this more interesting?
I will practise self care if this post reaches 666k BY THE END OF 2022
Op you have fuckethed with the devil this post has gained 30,000 notes since I reblogged it last night
OP I hope you are ready to practice some self care because if there's one thing the gremlins of tumblr love it's a challenge.
i normally hate these "oh noo don't give me a ton of notes" posts but this one? this one i love.
posts that have 666k notes TO ME. and hopefully to you, too, OP. 💜
Let's all practice self care if this post hits the magic number…
YALL HELP US
@bigfootshonkers @dollopheadsandclotpoles @gwaine-the-rock-johnson @hannahhook7744 @knightofwoodsbeyond @reality-schmality @thirteenthedoctor @yoursassybookwormfriend if you want to of course @fuckyeahsnackables
Op telling us we'll never make it to 666k by the end of 2023 (only having to make it 2022 after all):
Us:
I was going to wait until y'all hit the mark, But I feel like I should say this now
When I made this post, it was supposed to be a joke
I mean, none of my posts ever get more than 20 notes if I'm lucky, so what are the odds of one reaching 666k? Impossible, haha
But then, something happened, something I didn't expect
People actually began to... like it? And... reblog? And comment?
Before I knew it, my notifications were swarmed with comments after comments after reblogs after comments all on this one post
Then, still in the mindset of this being a joke, I realised I'd made the goal too easy, so I upped the stakes
But... the notes just got more frequent from there
And it started to hit me just what was happening
For a while, I was overwhelmed with a feeling
A feeling I wasn't used to
It was like... all of a sudden... I mattered...
My existance was actually noteworthy
People actually... cared?
It wasn't a game anymore, it was a race to assure a stranger on the Internet that they were actually worth something
Hundreds of people all gathering in one online place to help out
Leaving messages and well wishes
Making me smile
Making me laugh
Funny comments
Jokes
Fun facts
Even simple comments
It all suddenly felt so real
This was never a joke to you
This was important
And I won't let any of that go in vain
So... stay tuned I suppose
I'll look after myself, and I'll post proof of it too
I'll catalogue every time I put my health first
Physical and mental
I'll acknowledge my bad days and celebrate my good days
But most of all
I won't forget this
Any of this
Ever

THIS ONE. REBLOG THIS ONE. LET’S GO SELF CARE 2023
We're all in this now, @aquilacalvitium
We're cheering you on, and I think you've inspired a lot of people to hold onto this bit of hope and motivation.
We all deserve a little kindness, especially from ourselves, and I'm so glad that this is helping you get there.
Let's go, friends, we're almost there, and then we're going to do the thing, together; okay?
Here's to being kinder to ourselves in 2023, and taking better care of ourselves (you can even start now)
self care is important!!! treat yourself better OP!!
brazil getting rid of bolsonaro in the same year that we celebrate 200 years of independence
sorry that wasn't very we're just friends of me
(embarrassing moment I needed to vent abt)
I said to my boyfriend, “I’m jealous of both She-Hulk and Daredevil, this is what bisexuality is, it’s a fucking prison.” He’s now crying laughing.
Tiktok ppl when they go out into the world and see cool and weird-looking people that don't fall in line with the heavily-sanitized, conventionally attractive perfectly manicured marketable version of "weird" they've been algorithmically spoonfed at a mind-melting rate

also people act like drag queens are incapable of changing how they act for kids. like do you really think things like storytime with drag queens has like, sex jokes and dildos? do you think drag artists are unable to treat children appropriately while in drag? like drag doesn’t always need to be safe for kids obviously but just because a drag artist does a sexual show for adults doesn’t mean that artist can’t also be kid-friendly during times they are around kids. drag artists are not some scary boogeyman that’s gonna traumatize your children by their sheer Aura of Queerness
Honestly when you think about it this extends to everyone in childcare.
Do you assume that every single teacher, daycare worker, babysitter, etc. is a perfectly pure, cartoonishly kid-friendly person all of the time? No. They’re adult human beings who cuss and drink and have sex like everyone else. But they know how to act around children, even if they act differently around their friends and partners and other situations that don’t involve children. Nobody acts just one way all the time in any scenario, including drag queens.
People do indeed assume that (their child’s) teacher is a perfectly pure, cartoonishly kid-friendly person all the time, and throw Screaming Tantrum if they see Kid’s Teacher having a glass of wine at a restaurant, or wearing a bathing suit on the beach.
Educators get in trouble for doing reasonable adult things off the clock all the time. It’s a SERIOUS cultural problem
