Here’s an idea I think would be fun to explore:

What if Ilya resembles his father and Alexei resembles Irina. I know the fandom loves to assume otherwise but did we not see episode 2? Ilya and his father have the same eyes.

And maybe that’s why Grigori ignores Alexei and fixates on Ilya: because it’s Alexei that reminds him of Irina. It’s Alexei that he can’t look at without remembering her and the shame he feels over her death.

And so Alexei tries to follow in his father’s footsteps, pursue the same career, to win his father’s approval. Because he notices it— has noticed since he was a teenager— the way Grigori refuses to meet his eyes. So he becomes exactly what his father believes a man should be.

And it’s why Alexei hates Ilya: because even though Alexei’s tried to become a model son, even though Ilya left and abandoned them, it’s still Ilya that Grigori calls to pick up bread on his way home, it’s Ilya he remembers when he’s confused and scared. It’s Ilya’s career that Grigori focuses on and complains about. Even if all Grigori does is criticize Ilya, it means he’s paying attention, that Ilya matters to him. And maybe criticism is still better than being ignored.
