I'm back from Lent! (Quite late haha but I was trying to take some time to think about how tumblr fits into my life in a non addictive way ... still pondering that one but for now I think the good outweighs the bad because there are some great people on here! I am not the best at making internet friends but I appreciate just being around all of you and I missed you.)

ANYWAY here's some art I made this Holy Week! I did one piece for each day. Some were more successful than others (and some were so much less so that I'm not gonna post them anywhere beyond my daily sketch insta haha). But I loved making them! Trying to make art related to my faith always scares me a little because HOW can I hope to capture the smallest part of the reality that is God and how I feel about Him? But trying to make art that praises God, even with my limited skills, always helps me feel closer to Christ and fills my heart with gratitude to Him. So I will keep trying :)

But also, in a way, Orpheus was still seeing the world as it could be (Is this a trick or a trap? Would Eurydice really choose to stay with him?) instead of the way that it is (Hades really would’ve kept his word and Eurydice really was going to follow him to the end). Just in time for the world to actually get a little better, his experiences leave him unable to believe it and his imaginative capacity now manifests as doubt instead of hope.

there is this really specific thing that very Online women of a certain age (mostly older millennials and younger gen x in my experience) who are married to a man will do where they will refer to their husbands as "Mr. (Part of My Username)"

so like if the username is something like "dancingwithbears" they'll refer to their husband as "Mr. Bears"

Idea for future The Blue Castle movie

Subtle but pervasive Dr. Redfern product placement in nearly every scene. When Uncle Wellington picks up a newspaper, there's a Redfern's Hair Vigor ad. You see Roaring Abel drive past a sign for the Purple Pills. There's a sign in Uncle Benjamin's store window for Redfern's Bitters. And of course every time Valancy has to rub Redfern's Liniment on old Cousin Stickles, we see the bottle.

On every Redfern product you see “the smug, beaming, portly, be-whiskered, be-spectacled picture of Dr. Redfern” in a green hat and checkered suit, over and over again in the background.

Until the end when Dr. Redfern himself shows up, so the audience knows immediately when Valancy asks herself, "Where have I seen that face before?"

(This was indirectly inspired by @oatmealnebraska's post about the Redfern Reveal especially talking about how Barney's reaction was clearly signposting something)

What I love best about Persuasion is that Anne's arc is about so much more than reconnecting with her lost love. It's about her coming back to life. After she's persuaded to give up Wentworth, she retreats from the world. Everyone overlooks her, and she's content to stay in the background. The events of the book force her to change, to go out to new places and interact with new people, to be seen and to do things. Wentworth is part of that, but he's not the spark. Anne's life starts changing and improving before he declares his love. She starts to find herself, and then she gets her romance. Wentworth recognizes her worth, but it's not like romance defines her worth. Even if Wentworth hadn't proposed, Anne would have been a happier person by the end of the book. She's learned how to engage with the world again, and the romance just adds to her joy.

I love this, because I’ve read several different takes that fault Anne as a character for being “too perfect” and experiencing little growth over the course of the story, and I don’t think that’s really true! I somewhat see where they’re coming from, because Anne is a basically good person who stands in stark contrast to the many characters around her with very obvious problems, whose issues range from being conspicuously silly and self-absorbed, to being a full-on selfish gold-digger. She remains true to her beliefs and maintains her sound character throughout the story rather than going through a more visible arc like Emma Woodhouse. But I do think she grows over the course of the story - from somebody who is good and dutiful, but content to stay in the background, to somebody who is ready to become part of the world again.

(Side note, but this reminds me of something my husband and I have been discussing about the differences between the Lord of the Rings books and movies. The movies seem to feel the need to add a lot more weakness and flaws to characters for them to overcome, maybe in the belief that they are “too perfect” in the books. Aragorn is changed to feel conflicted about taking his place as king, Faramir becomes tempted by the ring to the extent of trying to force Frodo and Sam to take the ring to Gondor, even Legolas and Gimli get a lot of “elves vs dwarves” angst injected into their movie friendship, Theoden becomes reluctant to fight and the move to Helm’s Deep becomes him being stubborn and overconfident and retreating from facing danger (unlike in the books, where he’s following Gandalf’s counsel to go there, even though he actually wants to fight). Sure, these changes fit with modern sensibilities better, but I don’t think they are an improvement on the book characters!)

I think it can be more difficult to pull off an arc where a character starts pretty good and is still pretty good at the end, but I think it can be done very well. I think it works best when the character is really put through the wringer and it’s clear that making the right choice does come at a cost for them. Stories about perfect characters living in a world that perfectly rewards their goodness at every step, where nobody changes, are not very interesting, but a story about a good and virtuous character who faces all kinds of obstacles and overcomes against all odds, and becoming even better through that struggle. . . that can be really powerful.

Don’t get me wrong, I do love stories about messy imperfect characters who experience a lot of growth and change over a story, but I also love stories where a character is faced with hardship and difficulty and pressure and sticks to their principles despite it all. And at the end, even if they didn’t go through a complete 180 from weak to strong or bad to good, they usually have grown and come into their own by facing the discomfort and pain with courage, in a way that is lovely and heartening and satisfying to read about. These types of stories are important just as much as the ones about dramatic character change, I think.

peerless strategy right here folks. this is why I grew up never watching Dora actually. my mom just thought she was super annoying so she wasn't allowed in the house Also, I found out years later this is why at my cousins' house they always skipped almost all of the dialogue scenes between Padme and Anakin in the Star Wars prequels . . . for years my cousins thought there must be something really risque or violent or whatever happening in those scenes that they weren't allowed to see but nope my aunt and uncle just thought they were Too Cringe To Be Endured so they always skipped past them 💀
