genuinely I could talk forever about the different wavelengths that project hail mary is absolutely incredible on and the depth of meaning behind the imagery and the narrative and the cinematographic techniques. but my favorite is when grace and rocky are just absolute roommates. I truly believe with my whole chest that the moving-in sequence is the most important characterization in the piece. they are completely alien species and their worlds are ending and INSTANTLY they are best friends. clock bros. they are snarky and they butt heads and they're sarcastic and they're silly and they play and they laugh and they sing and they fight and they insult each other and they gross each other out and they're curious and they get emotional and they fail and they ache and they live!!!!!! despite it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they live and then "rocky make the door, you close the door" "why, I thought this was a safe neighborhood?" there they are, goofy as hell like nothing happened!!!!!!!!!!!
I just realized that it's not quite true that Earth doesn't know what happened to Grace after he went back for Rocky.
I mean, NASA keeps tracks of what's happening on the other planets. They know which planets are infected with the astrophage.
So they probably know that Erid is NOT infected with it anymore, which means they can come to the conclusion that Grace must have suceeded in finding Rocky.
And now there's a wikipedia page for Rocky and Grace respectively that specifically describe them as the saviours of two planets.

You know that tidbit about how "if you want to be a girl/boy, but you don't want to consider yourself transgender or commit to any form of transition because 'I'd make an ugly girl/boy!', then you are already transgender and a girl/boy"? The same is true for non-binary people. If what's stopping you from thinking of yourself as non-binary is a fear that you'll turn out ugly or like a caricature of a non-binary person, or that no-one will ever view you as worthy of love if you're non-binary, you are non-binary and expressing gender dysphoria and imposter syndrome. When I was diagnosed at age sixteen, after having one period in the eighth grade and then never again till a medically induced one my junior year of high school - my uterine lining measured in centimeters because it was so thick, my mother turned to me in the car. She was upset. Literal tears in her eyes. And she told me her friend had PCOS, but was still able to have kids. That this was still a possibility for me if I did injections and fertility treatments, etc. My mom had never asked me if I wanted kids, she just assumed.
My first conversation about PCOS with my new endocrine/OBGYN was about weight management and how that could improve my fertility when I eventually wanted kids. It wasn't asked what my goals were for my health or if I wanted kids, just assumed.
I was a hormonal, depressed mess. I hated my body. My body dysmorphia was so bad that I cloistered myself away from so much. I wore hoodies and jeans in the 90°F, 80% humidity summers. This was considered fine. I was given metformin and birth control pills and told this was all that could be done. That PCOS wouldn't affect my life until I wanted to be pregnant. I wasn't asked if I wanted to be pregnant, just assumed.
I don't know how many PCOS groups I joined on my early 20s hoping to find community and commonality for body dysmorphia and symptom management, only to be bombarded with fertility treatments and tips and 'inspirational conception' anecdotes. They never asked if I was attempting to conceive, just assumed.
It's a problem. It's been a problem. And thank god I learned to speak up and find medical professionals that would help me with *MY* goals. I shouldn't have had to, someone should have recognized the needs of that sixteen y.o. and protected her, but I can only hope the conversation changes as awareness increases.
