Is this finally the time to voice my unpopular opinion? Ah, whatever, I'll just say it: I didn't really care that much for the book, meanwhile I ADORED the movie.
I don't know if it's because the audio book I listened to seemed to have been shortened (all the good, fun scenes like Debois and Shapiro fishing for a threesome with Grace and assuming he's sleeping with Stratt got cut out), or because the German narrator of the audio book was kind of....bland, which in turn made Grace seem pretty bland, or because I felt like the book was completely plot driven and not character driven, which I hate, but I guess it's a combination of all three. I'm so happy I saw the movie first because if I'd read the book first, I don't think I would have been as hyped for the movie, if I'd went to see it at all. I adore movie Grace, and I adore movie Rocky, I adore their bond, I adore Stratt being tough and no nonsense, but also having a soft side. I cannot care about the plot if I don't care about the characters. Usually the tense, action filled scenes in movies bore me because I don't really care what happens to the characters, but the "Time go fishing"-scene? Man, that was brutal! I don't think I've ever been THAT invested in a scene before. Meanwhile book Grace seemed a little boring to me and there was not much emitional depth, especially in the scene where Rocky offers give Grace fuel for his journey home.
IN MY OPINION!! I completely understand if people say they hated the movie and loved the book, this is just how I experienced it. Maybe my issue with the book is just that the genre wasn't my cup of tea, while the movie lured me in with its comedy aspect, which I'm a sucker for. And Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller, who I'm also a sucker for.
