Green sea turtles have been an iconic endangered species since the 1980s, mostly due to bycatch in fishing nets and taking adults and eggs for food. I have core childhood memories of watching Steve Irwin talk about sea turtle conservation in front of a beach full of nesting green sea turtles.

After 45 years of conservation efforts, their population now meets the IUCN criteria for Least Concern rather than Endangered.

For a species with such a slow life history (it takes green sea turtles decades to reach sexual maturity) and a nearly global population, this is a Really Big Deal. This is the kind of long term conservation victory that many of the amazing humans who started working on green sea turtle conservation back in the 80s didn't live to see.

One of my biggest issues with the "Game Changer" book (the Scott/Kip one) was how immature everyone felt. I just wasn't personally vibing with the characters. The show moved me from "active dislike" to "okay, they're cute, I guess" with how the actors inhabited these characters in a way that felt more grounded and experienced, and I do think a fair part of that was... giving them the context of age.

Individually, I think the Scott/Kip plot beats are all generally positively impacted by Scott being older. Scott's loneliness, fear, hope, and decision to live freely are all highlighted and underlined by the additional years of being closeted. Scott being near the end of his career when he finally wins and going, "Fuck it, I'm going to be happy," rang a little truer and more touching to me.

In the context of the whole show, combining the two books, I like how the age change better differentiates Scott from Ilya and Shane. The contrast is nice and interesting narratively. I like the "generation" dynamics. Scott making a choice to come out when he doesn't have much time left as a pro player is slightly different in flavour to the choices before Shane and Ilya, who are closer to the peaks of their careers. I like having more flavours.
