Infants are given a vitamin k shot at birth because they cannot synthesize vitamin k or get it from their diets, it is vital in preventing vitamin deficient bleeding which can cause death or permanent brain damage. Administering the injection is a bog standard preventative measure done on newborns immediately after birth, usually automatically. More and more parents are denying it and more and more babies are having totally preventable complications in their first 6 months of life just because the vitamin k shot has a black box warning. Doctors are repeatedly trying to explain to parents that babies need vitamin k and parents just keep asking “Why? Why are babies born needing vitamin k? Humans survived for thousands of years before it was invented. This must be a conspiracy.”

Infants, the human life stage notorious for randomly dying with no easily discernible cause. I don’t say that to be flippant, human babies are so incredibly fragile that before the modern era, about half of them died before adulthood. That is a natural 50/50 of making it. Humans did not evolve to be perfectly designed and efficient, we are just functional enough for some of us to survive to adulthood and reproduce. We don’t have to live like that! Looking at the human body through the lens of infallible intelligent design and allowing that to inform your medical decisions is so fucking dangerous.

Vaccine hesitancy is just anyone having questions before getting a vaccine. Asking "what is the purpose of the vitamin K shot and why should my baby have it" without any intent to necessarily decline said shot makes you vaccine hesitant. And, quite frankly, questions like that should be asked if you do not know the answer.

Its really easy to label those who have questions about vaccines as an issue because of how settled everything tends to be around vaccines, but we shouldnt. One should be curious about medical care and health. Some level of understanding of vaccines and why a child might be getting a shot of whatever kind is important. And asking those questions and understanding whats going on and practicing health literacy matters.

Please ask your doctor questions and be well-informed on your and your family's health.

What might be a better term than vaccine hesitant is vaccine skeptic. Hesitancy is fine and normal and functions as a useful label for public health research and within medicine fo various reasons and should be considered a healthy and reasonable thing for a patient to be.

I have a lot of issues with how fat acceptance claims that the (US) government wants people fit for a war-ready population.

Firstly, show me one country (that doesn’t have bigger problems) that doesn’t have a public health program. I’m not exactly disagreeing that that is the goal of a government but I truly don’t think this is the best avenue to express anti-military sentiment. I’m being a little blasé about it because this isn’t special to the US or a fascist government, y’all don’t even have compulsory military service!

Second, do you not have free will? I swear to you there’s nothing inherently violent about strength and fitness, I truly hate the implication of otherwise. Do you think anyone who does a lot of manual labour isn’t strong? Or someone in rescue services? Perhaps this is exaggerated but with how militarism is so tied to toxic masculinity I do think it particularly discourages women or anyone who’s aligned with femininity to pursue strength that could be life-saving or at the very least extend their independence as they age.

You’re not a morally better person for not pursuing fitness and I’m not better because I am.

My dad's stories of late-1970s Iran, having to run from riots, come to mind. And this year, the situation there has been weighing on me. I see videos of people marching in protest and running from the IRGC, and I think about being in such a situation. I want to be able to run, fight, carry people, move objects, climb, etc.

Its interesting that, as it comes to addressing beauty standards in a radical way, its just in reference to a healthy weight. None of the women in fat acceptance stop shaving, its about rebranding fat as sexy, and they always, always wear a full face of makeup. I will say, I have been known to wear a bold lip and mascara, but tbh, im not most of the time and i refuse to wear a full face at this point in my life. I dont shave my legs. And yet, because I am viewed as "thin" (rather than muscular, despite being so) i am considered someone who spends too much time meeting patriarchal beauty standards.

But fat must be rebranded as sexy, you see. Its subversive objectification. Being plucked and waxed to perfection with perfect contour or whatever is popular in make up now (because it must be the latest make up trend) is part of it. It is how one is seen as sexy. Yet lifting weights and being a weight that is capable of handling sprints is.....patriarchy. its not radical. Its oppressive.

Yet the bog standard kit of patriarchy, one sold to you by large corporations through concepts of being inadequate unless you follow these norms and rules where people, men in particular, are actively profiting off you is somehow liberating compared to calorie control and activity. Something that provides no benefit but social and societal acceptance (at best, literally no one cares that I dont shave or wear make up--i havent lost friends, my co workers still like me, my husband is still my husband and he loves me with all that entails) is still part of their radical agenda. A societial acceptance which they are interested in pushing back against--but only as it comes to weight.

This is to say nothing about how large food companies *love* fat acceptance and their easy to hijack messaging to push their foods onto people. Love yourself, eat *insert processed junk food here* your weight doesnt matter, your health doesnt matter~~
