βBy the first world war, soldiers swore so much that the word βfuckingβ came to function as no more than βa warning that a noun is comingβ.Β β
Guardian review ofΒ Holy Sh*t: A Brief History of Swearing by Melissa MohrΒ
i would like to take this opportunity to present my headcanon about that infamous βlanguage!β line: steve and the howlies had such dirty mouths that they had to be constantly reminded to clean it up for the reporters that followed them around. so steve heard a swear word over the radio and had a kneejerk stop that weβre being filmed for the folks back home reaction.
in other words, he said βlanguageβ not because he never swears, but because if heβs not on guard he swears way too much. :D
βthe word βfuckingβ came to function as no more than βa warning that a noun is comingβ
And the interesting thing about actually dealing with people who do swear to that degree, which I have, is that eventually your brain completely tunes the word fucking out.
You basically donβt hear it. It becomes unimportant noise.
I was actually just talking to someone last night about how when I was a kid (the 80s), no one said βfuckβ or βshit,β ever, but people casually tossed slurs around like nobodyβs business. Now people use βfuckβ and βshitβ like punctuation, but slurs are increasingly tabooβand thatβs exactly how it should fucking be.
You can tell we were kids in the 80s in different placesβ¦
OH MY GOD I FOUND THE POST AGAIN!!
When I first saw this post go around, I was traveling, but I had something I wanted to say and I could never find it again.
Okay, so, this post isnβt wrong, but what the original gifset doesnβt take into account (though some of the commentary touches on it) is how incredibly situational swearing was in the 1940s.
So, yes, men swore a lot β around other guys, in certain contexts. But they were very heavily conditioned not to swear around women and kids.
I think this might be one of the big reasons why a lot of people my age and younger got the idea that people didnβt swear during the 1940s. Most of us fell into the βkidβ or βfemaleβ categories, or both, and guys our grandparentsβ age would never, ever say βfuckβ around us. And those words werenβt usually used in media of the era for similar reasons, so we got the idea that people that age were very prim and polite, when itβs more that they were prim and polite around us.
I remember as a young woman walking in on groups of old blue-collar guys talking among themselves, with profanity flying freely, and then noticing me in the room and immediately clamming up and apologizing to me for swearing around me.
Thereβs a bit in the Douglas Bader biography I was reading a month or so ago that demonstrates this in a WWII context. According to the book, the squadron pilots swore freely in their radio chatter to each other in the field, to the amusement of the WAAFs (female service personnel) who were listening to the radio in an ops room as they moved counters around on maps (much like we see Peggy doing in TFA) and the embarrassment of their commander:
After awhile, to the regret of the Beauty Chorus [the WAAFs], Woodhall disconnected the loud-speaker in the Ops Room, feeling that some of the battle comments were too ripe even for the most sophisticated WAAFs. (βThey laugh, you know,β he said, βbut dammit I get so embarrassed.β)
β¦ so, right, even in the middle of a war, pilots saying βfuckβ over the radio was something the female staff had to be insulated from.
Say what you will about the baby boomers, but they largely demolished that wall between βswearing around menβ and βswearing around womenβ. Most guys my dadβs age donβt do it anymore, at least not to that much of an extreme. By the time you get to my generation (Iβm 40), people might swear or they might not, and they usually donβt swear around young kids, but swearing around men but not around women is just not a thing anyone does anymore. At least I donβt know anyone who does it specifically and consistently whoβs not elderly.
Itβs not really an individual-sexism thing, more of a socialization thing β sexist on a societal level, sure, but I donβt think Steve would balk at swearing around women, kids, or in a refined or professional social setting because heβs a sexist or a prude. Itβs just something you didnβt do as a polite person. Like blowing your nose on the tablecloth in a fancy restaurant. I think he could and probably would unlearn that, but itβd take time.
So, to me, about half the examples up there work just fine (βnow why the fuck would I do thatβ to Bucky β absolutely! Or βIs everything a fucking joke to you?β to Tony) and several jar horribly, because theyβre not the right context (like the βthereβs only one God ma'amβ bit β noooo, you arenβt going to get βfuckβ and βma'amβ in the same sentence! not for a Steve fresh from the 1940s! β or βwe have our fucking ordersβ β¦ in a polite, professional context like that, no). Steve would never. Or, I should say, someone from Steveβs culture β who tries in general to be a polite and respectful person, as Steve does β would never. Maybe after heβs had a few years to acclimatize to the more relaxed social climate surrounding swearing in the 21st century, but I think itβd take him awhile; he would sort of instinctively jerk himself back from doing it in all but the most relaxed sort of βpalling around with your teammatesβ environment.
(Headcanon-wise, I could see Steve very quickly incorporating someone like Natasha into his mental schemata as βone of the guysβ β not consciously, but on a subconscious level: like, he doesnβt hold back from swearing around her pretty quickly β but taking a LOT longer with someone like Wanda or Pepper.)
tl;dr disclaimer: not a historian, was not alive in the 1940s, so please correct me if Iβm wrong on things here.
Iβm so glad someone said this, because this is something I think a lot of the Steve meta about swearing misses. Situational profanity, exactly! He wouldnβtΒ cuss in anything heβd considerΒ βpolite companyβ, because you didnβt doΒ that. Iβm absolutely sure heβs capable of having a very foul mouth in some circumstances (he was a soldier who grew up in working-class Brooklyn, soβ¦ yeah), but in the cultural context where he grew up, you sure as hell didnβt sayΒ βfuckβ in front of a lady, not if you had any manners to speak of.
/speaking as someone who cusses like breathing, even.
This is the best explanation of Steveβs βlanguageβ line Iβve ever seen.

The reason why so many of y'all's feminism sucks is because you still believe deep down in your hearts that there are only two kinds of people in the world: precious, ethereal, fragile dollthings called "women", and violent, lustful, rage-fueled apes called "men". Until you throw that idea away, 3rd-grade-tier "girls rule boys drool, girls are princesses and boys are stinky :(" is as feminist as we'll ever get-- and I hope it's obvious that that's lightyears away from the bare minimum of where we need to be.
I don't know how I'm supposed to explain to ostensibly trans-friendly feminists that "women are beautiful soft things made of glass, men are obsessed with violence and sex" is exactly what the patriarchy wants you to believe. Patriarchy wants you to believe that being a woman and/or having a vagina (patriarchy generally believes those two things are synonymous) makes one shatter on impact with reality. It makes you easier to control if you are scared shitless of the other half of the population, and it makes you more compliant with your lot in life if you believe it is in the nature of the other half of the population to rape and kill rather than realise those were choices those individual rapists and murderers made. There is no way to make gender essentialism progressive and feminist, because it is one of patriarchy's tools of subjugation. Stop trying to make it progressive.
And I can scream all of that from the rooftops over and over again, and what I hear in reply is "Trans men really are men because no woman would ever decide to become an inherently evil repugnant rapist ape", and "You're so right. Trans women are women because they too are pretty delicate little objects I can fuck", and "You're non-binary? So are you fucktoy non-binary or sexpest non-binary?", and my patience runs ever thinner.

i just love all the stories about production on project hail mary. they didn't use a single green/blue screen in the whole film. they built the whole interior of the hail mary. the petrova line scene was done practically by putting infrared lights on a chicken wire cage. rocky's voice was one of the puppeteers because he did such a good job during filming that they couldn't imagine anyone else voicing him. and rocky was a practical puppet/animatronic! sandra huller picked sign of the times as her karaoke song and she asked her daughter if it was still a cool song. i just feel like there was so much love making this film and im obsessed
