Be My, Be My Baby (Be My Little Baby)
This boy was someoneâs baby.
âEarlâŚâ Bonnieâs voice was so desperate with hope. Earl looked over his shoulder at her. Sheâd climbed out of the truck and the flood lights bathed her in her shadows of darkness and beams of brightness. Her hands were clasped as if in prayer in front of her chest as she stared at them. âEarl, is heâŚâ
And now he was Bonnieâs.
Earlâs POV of the kidnapping.

I havenât read this essay in⌠twelve years? I think? But someone (ETA: that someone was @whetherwoman who deserves the credit) linked it today and rereading it was a) a treat and b) honestly really helpful. If you, like me, want to write smut but often find it difficult, this essay may help a LOT.
Reblogging this as I periodically do because itâs still relevant (especially with so many new writers coming into fandom spaces who are SO ENTHUSIASTIC but maybe need some pointers?) and because I myself need the reminder. Wherever you are, Res, I hope youâre doing great.

some day i will be excommunicated from the group chat for being too pedantic
OLIVER STARK as EVAN 'BUCK' BUCKLEY
9-1-1 | S09E15 : Pick Your Poison
i think i don't really vibe with most other fans of my favorite male characters is because they usually depict them too much of a man, and i am not interested in men, i am interested in The Character. and i am not saying that they should depict them as women, or nonbinary, or should depict them as feminine, no, not at all. but there's like, you know, you can depict a male character as The Character, and you can depict them as The Man. do you get me? like, i go to the fandom looking for art and fics, and it's just, regardless of his actual characterization, it's all just fantasizing about some kind of an abstract dominant patriarch, wearing my favorite character's face. it may be the most totally-wouldnt-have-normal-relationships (and sometimes even would-literally-abuse-you) kind of guy, and you join a dedicated space for his fans, and all they talk about is how they want to marry and start a tradcore 50s style nuclear family with him. it can be a guy who's arrogance and attempts of domination are explicitly shown to be a facade that hide the fact that he's actually kind of a massive pathetic wet loser, and you go to his fics, and they're all depicting him as a caricaturish daddy dom. at this point it's like, do you even like the character at all, or do you just like The Man, and project this man onto whatever character you find visually attractive? and these people kind of, really really poison actual discussion of the character, who is kind of a fucked up evil person (i only like *those* types, so im talking about them) because they see analysis of the actual character as an attack on their fantasized daddy dom husband, who is actually isn't The Character at all, and is simply a face of the day for The Man

okay, we officially have brackets for the first round of the free my girl / victims of fandom misogyny tourney! if you have any questions or concerns, or you noticed any typos and other mistakes, please let me know! i'll be posting 8 polls a day starting tomorrow! polls will last a week. i'm looking forward to reading your impassioned defenses of these characters!
re: this post i do think a central element of The Buckley Diaz Family Thing is eddie's complete unspoken confidence that buck will always put him and chris first, but crucially, without him ever having to cede any control there. unlike shannon, buck doesn't actually have any rights to eddie or chris, as is amply demonstrated by basically all of s8. he can't make any demands because he's 'just' the best friend. it's not his place.
and the thing is, eddie is chris's father, he does have the right to make the calls there, and buck is not and does not. it's not as simple as 'buck foolishly thinks that he's not unconditionally a part of The Diaz Family but eddie and chris set him straight' - in actual fact, he's been repeatedly framed as an outsider when it comes to their family unit in the past two seasons. it's just that buck has never had any responsibilities that precluded him putting eddie (and chris) first despite that, and now (maybe) he does. and i think that could really shake things up between them.
For the trope ask game: 5 + 1 things!
B+! i do love the way this lends itself to contrasting little vignettes exploring different aspects of characters and relationships, and i think it's a really flexible format that allows authors to do a lot of different fun things. it's not necessarily something i seek out in and of itself, but i like it a lot!

i think eddieâs version of buck leaving was the lawsuit tbh, when buck made that decision and eddie (and by extension, chris) couldnât speak to him
Thatâs a good point. I was trying to remember if there was an equivalent but I didnât think of this one.
That said, I think the difference with the lawsuit is that Eddie (and everyone else, iirc) framed it as Buck being selfish and childish and acting out when he was upset and hurt and didnât get his own way. They were all angry about it, to greater or lesser extents, and Buck was seen as in the wrong, which meant Eddie felt both entirely justified about his response to it and surrounded by the safety of knowing (or at least telling himself) everyone else felt the same.
With Eddie leaving, both when he went to dispatch and when he went to Texas, it was him selflessly putting Chris first, and everyone else was supportive and clapped him on the back and told him he was doing the right thing, while Buck was (again) framed as somewhat selfish for having negative feelings about him going, even when he was trying his best to be supportive, ie Texas.
I think itâd be interesting, and potentially prompt some movement, if Eddie had that opportunity to come second to someone else (Theo) , especially someone he canât object to being secondary to, and if everyone else was on Buckâs side, effectively, and it was only Eddie who didnât want Buck to go.
He would have to face up to it as his own personal, emotional loss, not as something he can hide behind Chrisâs feelings or everyone elseâs shared, justified anger about a âbadâ decision, because itâs not a bad decision. Itâs just one he wasnât included in, and thatâs the crux of many of their issues. Theyâre not partners, they donât have to decide things together. But they both feel the consequences of these big decisions as if they were. Or at least Buck does. Iâd like to see Eddie on that side now too.
okay this is an insane poll but for context: as a lot of people know, in fashion and styling, different people have different complimentary palettes. some people look better in cool tones, some people look better in warm tones, some in bright colors, some in pastels, etc etc. however, this also applies to metals, specifically gold vs silver. so,
do you know whether you "should" be wearing either silver or gold
yes, i know which looks best, and i stick with this
yes, i know which looks best, and i don't care
no, i don't know
nuance button
i very much want to clarify before people get mad at me: i am not saying this is a thing that matters genuinely literally at all ever. i just am curious if most people care or are even aware of this.

âł for Eddie comes it for everyone expect buck
And âł for e buddie fuck or die
eddie comes out to everyone but buck, featuring a fateful early night on buck's part:
They end up at the Hook and Ladder for drinks after their twenty-four, the first time in a while the whole A-shift has been able to make it. Hen and Chim stake out a booth in the back corner, close to the pool tables, and they trade off games and drinks and easy conversation over tap beer. Buck buys the first round as an apology for skipping out last time, admitting as he does that he'll probably leave early tonight, tooâMaddie has the kids for the evening, but Theo has enough trouble sleeping without adding any new changes to his routine.
buddie fuck or die aftermath:
He doesn't know how long he's been standing there when the doorbell rings and he falls back into his body like he's landing on pavement from a heightâthe same instinct to freeze against the impending pain. He breathes in, then out. His lungs ache. He shakes his hands out, forces his joints loose. Thinks, Jello, you're Jello, and then wishes he hadn't, because that's a good memory, not something he wants touching any of this. Eddie's warm voice, Eddie's soothing smile, Eddie laughing when Buck hassled him as they left the scene, one of a thousand precious memories that he can't look at until he can figure out how to pack this shit up and put it somewhere it can't poison anything else.
WIP Meme
For the tropes: amnesia, fake dating, meet the family!
amnesia:
B+! this is a fun one as a mechanism to kind of turn one of the characters into an outsider in their own life and force a recontextualization of the life situation and all of the relationships. in some fandoms it can get a bit repetitive and tbh i kind of prefer it when it's not the standard 'omg, we're together/weirdly intimate with each other and i think we're together now!' i like it when it causes problems.
fake dating:
another B+! solid fluff trope, for the most part. this is one that i like a lot but it rarely does anything surprising, so it's always exciting when it does.
meet the family:
B-, only because it's very hit or miss - it strongly depends on the author's ability to sell an interesting dynamic not just with the main pairing but with the family. when it leans more toward the domestic fluff side of things it tends not to interest me much; when there are tensions or problems there that the lovers have to deal with (both with the family and with their relationship) it's a lot of fun.
