Idk why but as a kid I used to get hysterically upset everytime I would imagine a gif of a rotating cow because I could never stop the cow from rotating no matter how hard I tried and I would be crying and no one knew why
This is probably an unnecessary addition, but OCD is missed in cases like these because it's deeply misunderstood by most people.
It's talked about like being obsessively neat or repeating pointless tasks is the main part of it, when really those are just potential symptoms.
The main thing behind OCD is not being about to turn off a thought. There's a thing where most people can just stop thinking about something. If it's over, it's not relevant, it doesn't matter anymore, people can turn their attention away. For OCD, that mechanism can get stuck. And some thought that was supposed to just temporarily pass through your head just stays there. An image of an object rotating. An anxiety about something bad happening. A wish that you made on a dandelion. These are all things that have at some point gotten stuck in my head, sometimes for years at a time.
The compulsions, the rituals, are the person trying to address the thought so it can go away. After all, if you're worried about the door not being locked you can check the lock. But for someone with OCD, that doesn't make the stuck thought go away. So they check it again. And again. And they made a ritual, maybe if I check it exactly five times, I'll know that it's locked and I can let this worry go.
It helps a little. It feels like you're doing something. But it doesn't solve the problem. Actual therapy for OCD involves not doing the compulsion. Instead, you ignore the thought, move around it, try not to give it space in your life. Your mind won't let the thought go normally, so instead you fill yourself with other thoughts. Other parts of your life.
It's not easy at first. Your mind fights you on it. But as you get practice, it gets easier. You learn tricks around your own mind, ways to look at the thought and go, hm. I guess I'll go distract myself now. It does get better. I promise
okay, so therapist here in her off hours. i just want to clarify that sticky thoughts, rumination, and difficulty transitioning off of thoughts can be a symptom of many thingsâadhd, trauma, autism, etc. it moves into ocd when you cannot put the thought down without a compulsion or a ritual.
Was about to say the above, very important addition.
OCD story: my brother had pretty bad OCD when he was younger (very rarely it can just... go away... as part of puberty) and one time my dad asked him to pull the weeds out of the driveway. He pulled them out, no problem.
But wait. He'd pulled them out once. One is an odd number. Even numbers are better. He knew that was going to bother him all fucking day.
So he put the weeds BACK into the cracks, and then pulled them out again. Phew. Problem solved.
But wait. He'd put them back in once. One is an odd number. Son of a bitch.
My brother is smart. He knows this is a dumb thing to be worried about, but it's OCD. Knowing, logically, that it's dumb doesn't help. So he puts the weeds back in the cracks again. He has now pulled them twice and put them back twice.
The problem being they're still there and the whole chore was to remove them.
So he leaves the broom by the door with a note for my dad:
"Weeds are pulled, you have to sweep them away."
This is just one example and of course it's different for everyone but the point is there's a big difference between "I find this aesthetically displeasing" or "this mildly bothers me" and the full OCD "this arbitrary thing is going to RUIN MY WHOLE DAY unless I do something to 'fix' it".
Like, if my brother had just walked away and not put the weeds back? That would be it. His day would be done. He would, at no point, stop thinking about how he'd pulled them an odd number of times. He would know that it was dumb, he would try to do other things and distract himself, but it wouldn't matter. The rest of his day would be about the fact that THIS THING WAS WRONG.
This part of the original comic above is important:
Look at the distress. This is OCD. It's not just getting a song stuck in your head, it's getting a song stuck in your head that will not allow ANYTHING else in there with it and also maybe it feels like it's a moral judgement somehow like the song is there because you fucked up?
Again, it's different for different people and there's milder or more severe cases and I'm not a doctor. And maybe you do have SOMETHING that you should look into even if it's not OCD, I'm not telling anyone they should ignore concerns about their mental health.
But little stuff that mildly bugs you for a moment isn't OCD. Liking to be organized isn't OCD.

As seniors, my friends and I greeted freshmen students (no one asked us to). One of us held a clip board and pen. One held a tailorâs measuring tape. And one had a sharpie and a small stack of âHello my name is _______â name tags. Hereâs how the prank goes.
1) Cheerfully greet each student as if youâre an official greeting team of some sort. Clip board holder says âFriend, letâs get you a name tagâ
2) Measuring tape holder proceeds forward, holding out tape-measures something random about the person (something where you donât actually need to be up close and personal, like the length of their shin from 2 feet away, or I suppose you could try asking âplease may I measure your wristâ or some such). Measuring person calls out a number. Possibly two.
3) Clip board person studiously records the number on a chart. Nods gravely/excitedly/smoothly/suspiciously/enthusiastically/whatever at Name tag person.
4) Name tag person writes down something utterly totally random in the tag blank. Like âpeanut butterâ or â aerodynamic jellyfishâ. With great ceremony, tag person hands tag to new student. All prankers bow, or offer waves, while saying âPleased to meet you (name tag name), welcome to college! We hope you have a great year!â And walk away in whatever style suits you best.
Done correctly, this can happen so fast and flawlessly that parents, new students and onlookers will all be awed and confused by the time youâre out of earshot and if they see you later, will simply go âhey, itâs the welcoming committee!â and laugh. And itâs so much fun.
Iâm obsessed with the idea of doing this but ONE person just gets named Steve.
If their actual name is literally anything other than Steve, itâll still be funny and everyone will wonder why this one person got a regular name on their nametag while everyone else is labeled as Jubilation or Injket-1098 or whatever.
If their actual name is really Steve, they will spend the rest of their life wondering how the hell you knew that by measuring the length of their pinkie.

the internet is an inherently haunted place if you think about it like. it's so weird to see long abandoned discussion boards stuck in a snapshot of the past, old conversations between kids from over a decade ago who have now grown into their own lives, obituaries taking the form of half finished profiles. and the silence that fills the gaps between. there's a constant ghostly record of each generation's thoughts, fads, their sense of humour. back when the future was at their fingertips. even stranger, people you used to know exist openly in that space, and they watch you watching them. if you want, deceased musicians can play through your headphones. there's always an underlying sense of reminiscing and time escaping our ever shortening attention spans. what a fuckin graveyard
