Iāve seen fire and Iāve seen rain.Iāve seen sunny days that I thought would never end.Iāve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,
But I always thought that Iād see you again.
His feet pounded against the paved street as he bobbed and weaved through the crowd of people on their way to the Saturday morning markets. He welcomed the cool breeze against his cheeks brought on by his running, thankful that the cool air helped soothe whatever was left of his motion sickness after the long train ride.
Just ahead of him on the ground, he could make out the shadow of his little buddy as the Exceed flew overhead.
They were back, and Magnolia was a sight for sore eyes after being gone for just a little over a year.
Heād only broken his promise to Lucy by three and a half days, but he and Happy were back now.
Faster,Ā muchĀ stronger, and maybe even just the slightest bit taller.
Heād have to ask Lucy for confirmation on that last one whenever he finally saw her again, but as the sight of her apartment drew closer, he found his speed surprisingly slowing down instead of picking up.
Happy dropped in altitude, coming down to coast alongside the dragon slayerās declining pace.
Natsu sniffed as they drew closer to the building, and a familiar scent washed over him, soothing some of the leftover nerves he felt, while adding to others.
āWhat are you waiting for?ā Happy asked, tilting his head as he noticed that the dragon slayer had stopped moving entirely. Natsu was making no move towards the apartment building where their friend was waiting,Ā had beenĀ waiting for an entire year, and this confused the Exceed.Ā
Natsu tilted his head back, allowing the sun to shine down on his face as he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. A small grin began to spread across his face then, and it felt as though an entire year had been leading up to this very moment.Ā
āNothing, Happy.ā He finally answered his little buddyās question, eyes crinkling in giddy anticipation as he disregarded the door and, for old timeās sake, knelt down in preparation to spring up to her second story window. āIām waiting for absolutely nothing. Not anymore."Ā
Then, without another thought, he jumped.Ā
The apartment was quiet and still as the girl sat at her desk, ignoring the balled up pieces of paper that littered the top of it. Weeks, days, aĀ yearāsĀ worth of discarded writing that never seemed to make itās way to the trash mocked the writer.
She frowned at it, flicking a crumpled ball of notebook paper that held words that only her eyes would ever see. All around her, it felt as though her work wasnāt comforting as it normally was, but instead mocking her.Ā
Huffing, she stood so abruptly that her chair nearly toppled over.
Walking away from the desk, however, caused the same hollow feeling to stir inside of her just as it had done for so long now. Her novel laid abandoned on the shelf and her pens and pencils ignored, scattered on the surface of the messy desk.Ā
Her fingers longed to pick one up and begin where she had left off last, knowing exactly how she wanted to begin. She had the motivation, but something kept her away.Ā
The realization to what was the cause of her problem hit hard and sudden, and was nearly crippling. The girl had to grip the scarf that was wrapped around her neck in order to even her breathing.Ā
The worst part was that she hadnāt even realized it until he was already long gone.Ā
His name slipped through her lips before she could help it.Ā
His ears perked when he heard her say his name, and he watched with concern as the girl kept her back to him. He sat perched on the outside of her window, not yet finding the right time to make his appearance. Had it been a year ago, he would have barged in without a second thought.Ā
It wasnāt a year ago, however, and Natsu had come to realize some things since then. Suddenly feeling self-conscious, the boy refocused his gaze to where he could see his reflection in the glass and ran a hand through his hair, wondering if she would like the change.Ā
He heard her say his name again, a little louder this time. Her tone was different now, had changed from something other than tearful.
Wondering what was the cause, Natsu looked past his reflection and into the room once more, only to see that Lucy had moved from where she had once stood in the center of her room. The blonde had wandered over, and was now standing directly in front of the window.Ā
Lucy was staring right at him.Ā
