Goth shit, racial issues, and what makes me smile.

The blurb said the shot was taken in Granada, Spain, by Agneta Fondén.  No other info, so I have no idea how old, etc.  There's a game (from 1988) that uses a similar pattern on one of its pieces, but this could predate it by at least a thousand years  — or not.  But the pattern intrigued me, so I made a texture map and used Blender's geometry nodes (no generative AI) to set up a hexagon grid with random rotations for the tiles:

That's all done with a single design:

You'd think this would have a name, right?  (For its historical use as an architectural / decor tile — although I've found out more about its use in games, that's not what I'm looking for.)  Like the Penroses do (and no, it's not one of those).  But I've had no luck finding it, or any other info.  Any (human only, please) help?

A Public Apology

A few months ago, we posted a message on our marquee that went viral. We were deeply disturbed by police brutality of people of color, and further disturbed by the Jesus followers we saw taking the side of white supremacists. We felt we could not stay silent. The message we shared read: “we worship a man of color murdered by keepers of the law.”

We were attempting to deconstruct the myth of a white, European Jesus, which has historically been used to prop up white supremacists. We wanted to make clear that white supremacy is not and cannot be supported by the gospel of Jesus Christ – that Jesus is not neutral, but is always on the side of the marginalized and oppressed. We wanted to remind our community that Jesus was an oppressed ethnic minority and a member of an occupied people. By “keepers of the law” we meant the Romans and all who enforced and propped up the unjust system of laws in the Roman Empire, a system which treated some lives (Roman lives) as more valuable than other lives (Jewish lives). We were referring to the violence that ethnically Jewish people suffered during that period of history at the hands of those claiming to “keep the peace” (the Pax Romana). We wanted to draw the parallel between that violence and the violence experienced by people of color in our own country today, who are living in the legacy and current reality of racist power structures and value systems. We believe Jesus was proudly Jewish, a fierce advocate for his people, and was killed in large part because he dared to challenge the unjust systems of power around him.

Sadly, our messaging missed the mark. As our country responds to yet more incidents of police brutality, images of our sign are beginning to circulate once more. We want to take this opportunity to publicly apologize and repent.

Shortly after our sign went viral the first time, messages began to pour into our inbox. Most were in support. Many of people of color wrote to us to say that they were so thankful to see a church taking a bold stand in solidarity. We even received many positive responses from those who identify as Jewish, but some alerted us to the fact that “keepers of the law” is terminology that has historically been used to refer to the Jewish people. Specifically, it has been used to foster hatred toward Jewish people by blaming them for Jesus’ death. We are well aware of the ways this anti-Semitism has fueled some of the worst atrocities in human history. We offer our humble and sincere repentance. We are horrified to think that our sign could in anyway be used to foster more death-dealing hatred toward those who are Jewish. We should have taken more care with our wording. We apologize whole-heartedly for any harm our message has caused. Anti-Semitism could not be further from our intended message.

If you are reading this and initially responded favorably to our marquee sign, we ask that you stop re-sharing that image and post this anywhere you have shared it. We also ask that you not defend us or our message. Oftentimes allies blunder their attempts at allyship, and we did this time. Please do not defend it and please do not silence, deny, or attack these important voices of constructive criticism alerting us to the anti-Semitism of our message. We are open to correction and we can admit when we are wrong without defensiveness. These voices are important for us all to hear. We will learn from this criticism and will try again until we get it right. This will not dissuade us from the important work of anti-racism. We hope you will join us in it. May we work together to build beloved community across the globe. We believe this is God’s dream and intention for us.
